Book Computation of Laminar and Turbulent Flow in Curved Ducts Channels and Pipes Using the Navier Stokes Equations

This book was released on 1980 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both laminar and turbulent flows in strongly curved ducts, channels, and pipes are studied by numerical methods. The study concentrates on the curved square-duct geometry and flow conditions for which detailed measurements have been obtained recently by Taylor, Whitelaw, and Yianneskis. The solution methodology encompasses solution of the compressible ensemble-averaged Navier-Stokes equations at low Mach number using a split linearized block implicit (LBI) scheme, and rapid convergence on the order of 80 noniterative time steps is obtained. The treatment of turbulent flows includes resolution of the viscous sublayer region. A series of solutions for both laminar and turbulent flow and for both two- and three-dimensional geometries of the same curvature are presented. The accuracy of these solutions is explored by mesh refinement and by comparison with experiment. In summary, good qualitative and reasonable quantitative agreement between solution and experiment is obtained. Collectively, this sequence of results serves to clarify the physical structure of these flows and hence how grid selection procedures might be adjusted to improve the numerical accuracy and experimental agreement. For a three-dimensional flow of considerable complexity, the relatively good agreement with experiment obtained for the turbulent flow case despite a coarse grid must be regarded as encouraging. Book Study of Three Dimensional Internal Flow Problems Related to Turbomachinery Flows

Download or read book Study of Three Dimensional Internal Flow Problems Related to Turbomachinery Flows written by Kirti N. Ghia and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this two-year research project is to develop a finite-difference numerical technique for the solution of the parabolized Navier-Stokes equations using a system of surface-oriented coordinates suitable for ducts of arbitrary geometry. An additional objective to be fulfilled by this research consists of developing an analysis for laminar duct flow with stream wise separation using mathematical models simpler than the full Navier-Stokes equations. In order to achieve the above objectives, the following three problems have been studied during the first year of the two-year contract period: I. Laminar Flow through Joukowski ducts, II. Laminar flow through curved polar ducts, and III. Analysis of laminar streamwise flow separation via a semi-elliptic mathematical model. In each phase of the research attention is given to the accuracy of the numerical solutions as well as the efficiency with which they can be determined. For this purpose, the following two additonal areas have been studied: iv. Higher accuracy of numerical solutions, and v. Efficient numerical algorithms. Suitable model problems have been selected wherever required, in this research, with the overall goal of contributing to further the understanding of internal flows in turbomachinery. Each of the above research areas is described in this report. (Author).

Book Unsteady Laminar Flow Through a Curved Duct with Small Curvature

Download or read book Unsteady Laminar Flow Through a Curved Duct with Small Curvature written by Islam Saidul and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of flows and heat transfer in curved ducts and channels has been and continues to be an area of paramount interest of many researchers because of the diversity of their practical applications in fluids engineering, such as in fluid transportation, turbomachinery, refrigeration, air conditioning systems, heat exchangers, ventilators, internal combustion engines and blade-to-blade passages in modern gas turbines. Blood flow in the human and other animals also represents an important application of this subject because of the curvature of many blood vessels, particularly the aorta. The flow through a curved duct shows physically interesting features under the action of the centrifugal force caused by the curvature of the duct. The presence of curvature generates centrifugal forces which act at right angle to the main flow direction and produce secondary flows. In the present dissertation, a numerical study is presented for the unsteady solutions of the thermal flows through a curved square duct for various Dean numbers. Time evolutions of the resistance coefficient are presented for small curvature at the small Grashof number Gr = 100.
