Book Finding the Woman Who Didn t Exist

Download or read book Finding the Woman Who Didn t Exist written by Melanie C. Hawthorne and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-03-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gisèle d'Estoc was the pseudonym of a nineteenth-century French woman writer and, it turns out, artist who, among other things, was accused of being a bomb-planting anarchist, the cross-dressing lover of writer Guy de Maupassant, and the fighter of at least one duel with another woman, inspiring Bayard's famous painting on the subject. The true identity of this enigmatic woman remained unknown and was even considered fictional until recently, when Melanie C. Hawthorne resurrected d'Estoc's discarded story from the annals of forgotten history. Finding the Woman Who Didn't Exist begins with the claim by expert literary historians of France on the eve of World War II that the woman then known only as Gisèle d'Estoc was merely a hoax. More than fifty years later, Hawthorne not only proves that she did exist but also uncovers details about her fascinating life and career, along the way adding to our understanding of nineteenth-century France, literary culture, and gender identity. Hawthorne explores the intriguing life of the real d'Estoc, explaining why others came to doubt the "experts" and following the threads of evidence that the latter overlooked. In focusing on how narratives are shaped for particular audiences at particular times, Hawthorne also tells "the story of the story," which reveals how the habits of thought fostered by the humanities continue to matter beyond the halls of academe.

Book Does the Woman of My Dreams Exist

Download or read book Does the Woman of My Dreams Exist written by Phillip Parcheminer and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-11-02 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the Woman of My Dreams exist? This is the question that I am asking the universe as I write my second book. I doubted the existence of the woman of my dreams when I started to write my second book. I doubted her existence because of how cruel the rest of the world could be to someone with social anxiety. I thought my years of being bullied were over before the writing of my second book. Then the bullying started all over again after I was somehow able to find the courage to let one of my angels know how I felt about her. This vilification led me into another pit of darkness. It had me believing it was wrong to love beautiful women. Yet my love for beautiful women was also the only thing to keep me alive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This rather simple plot is a most compelling drama that bristles with suspense as it contains all the elements of a classic 19th-century mystery including, reversed identities, a horrible crime, an eccentric detective, and a tense courtroom scene. Set in the fictional frontier town of Dawson's Landing on the banks of the Mississippi River in the first half of the 19th century, the book turned from a farce to a tragedy in the course of Twain’s writing and the result was a profound meditation on race and identity in America. His female character, Roxana, the light skinned slave, is a compelling tragic heroine. David "Pudd’nhead" Wilson is a wise yet unorthodox lawyer who collects fingerprints as a hobby. Considered to be quite eccentric, people do not frequent his law practice until he solves a local murder in which two foreigners are falsely accused. Murder and mayhem precede a courtroom scene that ranks as one of the most memorable in American literature. Witty, absorbing, and widely acknowledged as the greatest of his later works, this was Twain’s last novel about the antebellum South, His most searing ironic vision of race in America, his satire humorously and pointedly lambastes everything from small-town politics and religious beliefs to slavery and racism.

Book Immigration and Women

Download or read book Immigration and Women written by Susan C. Pearce and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2011-05-23 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a national portrait of immigrant women who live in the United States today, featuring the voices of these women as they describe their contributions to work, culture, and activism. Highlighting the gendered quality of the immigration process, it interrogates how human agency and societal structures interact within the intersecting social locations of gender and migration. The popular debate around contemporary U.S. immigration tends to conjure images of men waiting on the side of the road for construction jobs, working in kitchens or delis, driving taxis, and sending money to their wives and families in their home countries, while women are often left out of these pictures. Through an examination of U.S. Census data and interviews with women across nationalities, we hear the poignant, humorous, hopeful, and defiant words of these women as they describe the often confusing terrain where they are starting new lives, creating architecture firms, building urban high-rises, caring for children, cleaning offices, producing creative works, and organizing for social change. The authors recommend changes for public policy to address the constraints these women face, insisting that new policy must be attentive to the diverse profile of today's immigrating woman: she is both potentially vulnerable to exploitative conditions and forging new avenues of societal leadership.

Book excerpt: THE BASIS FOR THE INTERNATIONAL TV SENSATION BABYLON BERLIN "Cabaret on cocaine...captures the dark glamour of a briefly exhilarating time between the wars." --NPR Babylon Berlin is the first book in the international-bestselling series from Volker Kutscher that centers on Detective Gereon Rath caught up in a web of drugs, sex, political intrigue, and murder in Berlin as Germany teeters on the edge of Nazism. It’s 1929 and Berlin is the vibrating metropolis of post-war Germany—full of bars and brothels and dissatisfied workers at the point of revolt. Gereon Rath is new in town and new to the police department. When a dead man without an identity, bearing traces of atrocious torture, is discovered, Rath sees a chance to find his way back into the homicide division. He discovers a connection with a circle of oppositional exiled Russians who try to purchase arms with smuggled gold in order to prepare a coup d’état. But there are other people trying to get hold of the gold and the guns, too. Raths finds himself up against paramilitaries and organized criminals. He falls in love with Charlotte, a typist in the homicide squad, and misuses her insider’s knowledge for his personal investigations. And as he gets further entangled with the case, he never imagined becoming a suspect himself. “The first in a series that’s been wildly popular in Germany is an excellent police procedural that cleverly captures the dark and dangerous period of the Weimer Republic before it slides into the ultimate evil of Nazism.”—Kirkus Reviews “Conjures up the dangerous decadence of the Weimar years, with blood on the Berlin streets and the Nazis lurking menacingly in the wings.”—The Sunday Times (London) “James Ellroy fans will welcome Kutscher’s first novel and series launch, a fast-paced blend of murder and corruption sent in 1929 Berlin.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)
