Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abbot Christopher Jamison, from BBC2's THE MONASTERY and new show THE SILENCE, suggests ways in which the teachings of St Benedict can be helpful in everyday life. Have you ever wondered why everybody these days seems so busy? In FINDING SANCTUARY, Father Christopher Jamison offers practical wisdom from the monastic tradition on how to build sanctuary into your life. No matter how hard you work, being too busy is not inevitable. Silence and contemplation are not just for monks and nuns, they are natural parts of life. Yet to keep hold of this truth in the rush of modern living you need the support of other people and sensible advice from wise guides. By learning to listen in new ways, people's lives can change and the abbot offers some monastic steps that help this transition to a more spiritual life. In the face of many easy assumptions about the irrelevance of religion today, Father Christopher makes religion accessible for those in search of life's meaning and offers a vision of the world's religions working together as a unique source of hope for the 21st century.

Book The Complete Lynch

Download or read book The Complete Lynch written by David Hughes and published by Random House. This book was released on 2014-04-30 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After working with David on his previous work for the series, The Complete Kubrick, we knew we were on to a winner for this book. Not only is David Lynch a master of modern film-making but David Hughes is well-qualified to write this 'complete' book. The book covers all Lynch's films including Mulholland Drive, TV and other projects, as well as the unrealised ventures such as Revenge of the Jedi (later directed by Richard Marquand as Return of the Jedi). It also includes a foreword by Barry Gifford - the novelist behind Wild at Heart and co-writer with Lynch of the screenplay for Lost Highway - and excerpts from a new interview David Hughes carried out with David Lynch himself. The Complete Lynch is the only comprehensive study of this great director.

Book Teresa My Love

Download or read book Teresa My Love written by Julia Kristeva and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-11-25 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mixing fiction, history, psychoanalysis, and personal fantasy, Teresa, My Love turns a past world into a modern marvel, following Sylvia Leclercq, a French psychoanalyst, academic, and incurable insomniac, as she falls for the sixteenth-century Saint Teresa of Avila and becomes consumed with charting her life. Traveling to Spain, Leclercq, Julia Kristeva's probing alter ego, visits the sites and embodiments of the famous mystic and awakens to her own desire for faith, connection, and rebellion. One of Kristeva's most passionate and transporting works, Teresa, My Love interchanges biography, autobiography, analysis, dramatic dialogue, musical scores, and images of paintings and sculpture to engage the reader in Leclercq's—and Kristeva's—journey. Born in 1515, Teresa of Avila outwitted the Spanish Inquisition and was a key reformer of the Carmelite Order. Her experience of ecstasy, which she intimately described in her writings, released her from her body and led to a complete realization of her consciousness, a state Kristeva explores in relation to present-day political failures, religious fundamentalism, and cultural malaise. Incorporating notes from her own psychoanalytic practice, as well as literary and philosophical references, Kristeva builds a fascinating dual diagnosis of contemporary society and the individual psyche while sharing unprecedented insights into her own character.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1984, Mother Teresa arrived in New Orleans to speak to a large crowd waiting in the Superdome. As Marie Bissell Constantin drove in from Baton Rouge to take her photograph, she had no idea that her encounter would mark the first of many, and that one day one of her images of Mother Teresa would be unveiled in front of over three hundred thousand people for her beatification ceremony in St. Peter's Square. In her photographic memoir, Constantin leads others through her unique journey of exploring the possibility of becoming a nun herself as she traveled to capture Mother Teresa in rare, private moments. In addition to powerful black-and-white images of Mother Teresa, Constantin shares personal stories that shine a light on the selfless life of nuns, from other religious orders, who live and work among the most abandoned people in the world.
