Download or read book Conceived in Liberty written by Jr. Tierney and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conceived in Liberty is a cultural, sociological and geopolitical review of the uniquely American notion that the country and its people are "exceptional." While all nations have their own patriotic commitments, no other people have outwardly declared their power as vigorously as have Americans, especially since World War II.John J. Tierney, Jr. advances the idea that liberty is the singular source of the power of the American worldview and all other elements of this society equality, patience, charity, justice, etc.are derived from liberty. He argues that this worldview comes from this one source and is responsible for the many movements that may engage the public's interest, such as women's rights, civil rights, and voting rights. Such movements are all positive, but they could not exist in a society devoid of liberty.Conceived in Liberty also traces other main components of the American worldview: geographic expanse, immigration, energy of the populace, diversity, public policies, and the elements that contribute to exceptionalism. Tierney is not blind to some of the deficiencies of the United States, but he posits that the liberty it manifests is truly the political globe's last, best hope.
Download or read book Citadel Values II written by Robert E. Freer and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2010-09-23 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it was first published in 1980, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition embodied a radical new method for identifying psychiatric illness. Kirk and Kutchins challenge the general understanding about the research data and the process that led to the peer acceptance of DSM-III. Their original and controversial reconstruction of that moment concentrates on how a small group of researchers interpreted their findings about psychiatric reliability to promote their beliefs about mental illness and to challenge the then-dominant Freudian paradigm. Download or read book The Deepest Roots written by Kathleen Alcalá and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As friends began “going back to the land” at the same time that a health issue emerged, Kathleen Alcalá set out to reexamine her relationship with food at the most local level. Remembering her parents, Mexican immigrants who grew up during the Depression, and the memory of planting, growing, and harvesting fresh food with them as a child, she decided to explore the history of the Pacific Northwest island she calls home. In The Deepest Roots, Alcalá walks, wades, picks, pokes, digs, cooks, and cans, getting to know her neighbors on a much deeper level. Wanting to better understand how we once fed ourselves, and acknowledging that there may be a future in which we could need to do so again, she meets those who experienced the Japanese American internment during World War II, and learns the unique histories of the blended Filipino and Native American community, the fishing practices of the descendants of Croatian immigrants, and the Suquamish elder who shares with her the food legacy of the island itself. Combining memoir, historical records, and a blueprint for sustainability, The Deepest Roots shows us how an island population can mature into responsible food stewards and reminds us that innovation, adaptation, diversity, and common sense will help us make wise decisions about our future. And along the way, we learn how food is intertwined with our present but offers a path to a better understanding of the future. In the wake of every crisis, there comes a moment when a lightening bolt of truth hits. The sting goes deep, (and anger arises when Our pretentious picture of Ourselves is disturbed, ) but, the pain of facing past mistakes will be worth it if it wakes Us up to remember Who We are. We must learn what it takes to be good stewards of the legacy left to Us. We are facing a tempestuous point in time, but built into every storm is the chance to learn and grow. We have to know Who We are and what is required to keep the dream alive. Change must come, but We must be the change. The evolution of both democracy and Humankind requires education and cooperation. Nothing more, and nothing less. The next step is a matter of choice, ...Our choice! It is time to learn from history and answer the call to take a stand

The 4,000 dogs that served with our men in Vietnam in every service branch are America’s unsung heroes. American dog teams averted over 10,000 casualties and worked as scouts, sentries, trackers, mine, and tunnel detectors. They were so effective the Viet Cong even placed a bounty on them. Heroes yes, but our own government left most of them behind to an unknown fate.

Download or read book Facing South written by David Bowman and published by The Institute for Southern Studies. This book was released on with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the country, and even this region, people view the South through myth and stereotype. It's not surprising. If they turn to newspapers, to television and radio, to popular films and literature, to most history books and folklore, they encounter these distortions. They find insulting portraits of Southerners, whitewashed presentations of southern economics and politics, selective visions of history, misunderstandings of relationships between people, and between people and their land and work. Many trivial qualities are romanticized; other important ones are totally ignored. Blacks are presented only as victims of racism, and labor struggles are completely forgotten. This view is inevitable when people simply treat the South as an aberration of mainstream America, or a remnant of some past culture. We at Southern Exposure look at the South from another perspective. This is our home, we are of it and examine it that we may know more of ourselves and our neighbors. These are the politics and culture that surround us and affect us daily, that we must analyze, praise and attack so our lives can grow and prosper. And this is the ground from which we must view the larger world. By listening to local tobacco farmers discuss the pressures on them to expand or die, we can better understand Earl Butz's plan for US agribusiness. By hearing a bluesman's story, we come to appreciate how a particular culture evolves from material hardship and inspires immense creativity.
