Download or read book Damselflies of Alberta written by John Acorn and published by University of Alberta. This book was released on 2004-09-21 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With iridescent blues and greens, damselflies are some of the most beautiful flying insects as well as the most primitive. As members of the insect order Odonata they are related to dragonflies but are classified in a separate suborder. These aquatic insects are a delight to the eye and a fascinating creature of study. In Damselflies of Alberta, naturalist John Acorn describes the twenty-two species native to the province. Exhaustively researched, yet written in an accessible style, the author's enthusiasm for these flying neon toothpicks is compelling. More than a field guide, this is a passionate investigation into one of nature's winged marvels of the wetlands.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of a symposium that reviewed what is currently known about the west coast of Vancouver Island, with particular emphasis on birds. Papers cover the physical and biological environment, including the physical oceanography of the west coast of Vancouver Island; the population and breeding ecology of marine and shoreline birds; the distribution of marine and shoreline birds at sea, including bird populations and their habitats offshore, in fjords, in estuaries and over eelgrass bed; and oil pollution and conservation of marine and shoreline birds, including the effects of oil from the NESTUCCA oil spill on marine birds, the effects of environmental disturbances, and conservation measures necessary to protect marine birds.

Download or read book Applied Biotechnology for Site Remediation written by Battelle Memorial In and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-03-08 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encyclopedic in scope, this new book presents state-of-the-art methods and techniques demonstrating new applications for biotechnology to remediate contaminated sites. Researchers and practitioners world-wide share their collective evidence to demonstrate how biotechnology works, both alone and in combination with other remediation techniques. This essential tool will aid engineers and environmental practitioners in the planning of effective and economical remediation strategies. No other book provides such diverse information on specific biotechnology applications.
Download or read book Hydrocarbon Bioremediation written by Battelle Memorial In and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-03-08 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With oil spills occurring worldwide, much media and practical attention has been given in recent years to the rapidly maturing field of hydrocarbon bioremediation, particularly with application to marine spills. Hydrocarbon contamination of soil and groundwater, although less visible, is even more widespread and has provided the background for the numerous studies presented in this book, in addition to those devoted to shoreline spills. Chapters address a wide variety of theory and practice and cover important subjects such as biofiltration, natural attenuation, surfactants, and the use of in situ bioventing compared to soil venting. This unique book represents the collective global experience of practitioners and researchers in North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. It describes experiences in tying laboratory studies to field applications. Nowhere else can anyone involved in hydrocarbon bioremediation find more up-to-date, relevant information on field experience using the various techniques and combinations of techniques in remediating hydrocarbons by biological means.

Download or read book Hydrological and Biological Responses to Forest Practices written by John D. Stednick and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-03 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alsea Logging and Aquatic Resources Study, commissioned by the Oregon Legislature in 1959, marked the beginning of four decades of research in the Pacific Northwest devoted to understanding the impacts of forest practices on water quality, water quantity, aquatic habitat, and aquatic organism popu- tions. While earlier watershed research examined changes in runoff and erosion from various land uses, this study was the first watershed experiment to focus so heavily on aquatic habitat and organism response to forest practices. The Alsea Watershed Study, as it came to be known, extended over 15 years with seven years of pretreatment calibration measurements, a year of treatment, and seven years of post-treatment monitoring. The research was a cooperative effort with scientists from Oregon State University, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Cooperating landowners included the Georgia-Pacific Corporation, the U.S. Forest Service, and a local rancher. It was a remarkable 15-year partnership marked by excellent cooperation among the participants and outstanding coordination among the scientists, many of whom participated actively for the entire period.
