Book Finding My Voice with Aphasia

Download or read book Finding My Voice with Aphasia written by Carol M. Maloney and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2013-05-10 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 9, 2009, Carol M. Maloney, a veteran teacher, experienced a transient ischemic attack in the left hemisphere of her brain. She helplessly observed her mind deteriorate to the point where she could not speak, walk, read, identify household objects, or recall her family. Maloney traveled between the worlds of the surreal and the logical. The stroke resulted in aphasia, the loss of communication and other functions of her left hemisphere. After eighteen months of rehabilitation, she was finally able to communicate with others by using her hand as a metronome. The frustration of having the words and sentences formed in her mind but being unable to share them caused frustration and depression. Her verbal abilities suffered, along with her reading and comprehension skills. Even so, hard work, strong will, and persistence has allowed her to reach out to other teachers to offer new insight into the minds of her beloved special-education and reading-disabled students. In this, her story, Maloney turns her experience into a unique opportunity to gain an understanding of her students difficulties and to share that knowledge with other teachers. Ms. Carol Maloney has written a compelling story that chronicles her amazing life before, during, and after her devastating stroke. She writes with frankness that touches ones heart. Her story will lend encouragement to those who have suffered a stroke as well as offer strategies to those who have a loved one recovering from one. Carol Maloney developed aphasia after her stroke. I am happy to say that she has survived and conquered both the devastation of her stroke and her aphasia. I know this first hand: she conducts amazing PowerPoint presentations to my graduate class at Rivier University each semester. She is an inspiration to all who want to improve themselves. In this book, Carol clearly describes the strategies that she used to help her become the functioning writer and speaker that she is today. J. Diane Connell, Ed.D.

Book excerpt: "Michael's book of poetry is an act of courage and of beauty. In Finding My Voice, Michael uses poems to render the experience of living with aphasia with tenderness, frustration, and eloquence. Aphasia changes our relationship to words, as both Michael and I know all too well. And yet a changed relationship is not a broken one, just like a life redirected by a singular traumatic event is not a broken one. Michael epitomizes so beautifully finding purpose in hardship, and I'm so grateful for the gift of this unforgettable collection of poems." -Gabby Giffords, former Congresswoman "Finding My Words is a gift to the world. Michael Obel-Omia's voice is so important; it is so hard to express oneself with Aphasia. I trembled with familiarity reading many of the poems. Anyone who wants to understand aphasia-whether you have it or not-should read this book." -Debra Meyerson, PhD. Professor, Stanford University; Author of Identity Theft: Rediscovering Ourselves After Stroke "Finding My Words is an astonishing, humbling, extraordinary and stunning collection. It speaks to the resiliency of the human spirit and should be required reading for everyone involved with the aphasia community as well as anyone with an appreciation of poetry as a means of expression. Michael Obel-Omia immerses the reader into the vortex of aphasia, challenging, teaching, and inspiring us along the way as he sheds light on this little known and often misunderstood condition." -Jerome Kaplan, MA, CCC-SLP Speech-language pathologist

Download or read book Aphasia written by Mauro Javier Cárdenas and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mauro Javier Cárdenas, the critically-acclaimed author of The Revolutionaries Try Again—“an original, insubordinate novel” (New York Times)—pens a profound story of literature about a man coming to terms with his dysfunctional Colombian family, as well as his own behavior, as an immigrant in America. Antonio wants to avoid thinking about his sister—even though he knows he won’t be able to avoid thinking about his sister—because his sister is on the run after allegedly threatening to shoot her neighbors, and has been claiming that Antonio, Obama, the Pentagon, and their mother are all conspiring against her. Nevertheless, Antonio is going to try his best to be as avoidant as possible, because he worries that what’s been happening to his sister might somehow infect his relatively contented, ordered American life, and destabilize the precarious arrangement with his ex-wife that’s allowed him to stay close to his two daughters. In fact, he’s busy doing everything except facing his problems head-on: transcribing recordings of his mother speaking about their troubled life in Colombia, transcribing recordings of his ex-wife speaking about her idyllic life in the Czech Republic; writing about former girlfriends whose words and deeds still recur in his mind; rereading stories by American writers that allow him to skirt the subject of his sister’s state of mind without completely destroying his own. Written in long, unravelling sentences that accommodate all the detritus of thought—scenes real and imagined, headphones and heartache, Toblerones and Thomas Bernhard—Aphasia captures the immensity of the present moment as well as the pain of the past. It cements Mauro Javier Cárdenas’s place as one of the most innovative and extraordinary novelists working today.

Book Lean Fall Stand

  • Publisher : Catapult

Download or read book Lean Fall Stand written by Jon Mcgregor and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thrilling and propulsive novel of an Antarctica expedition gone wrong and its far-reaching consequences for the explorers and their families "leaves the reader moved and subtly changed, as if she had become part of the story" (Hilary Mantel). “McGregor’s depiction of speechlessness, both metaphorical and physical, makes the novel much more interesting than if he had provided a page-turner about a botched expedition in Antarctica . . . McGregor’s carefully composed dialogue, filled with the repetition of so few words, had an eerie effect on me: for several days my own inner dialogue was often composed of the same words, as though I, too, was discovering how they could express drastically different emotions yet remain unreadable to the world." —Yiyun Li, New York Review of Books Remember the training: find shelter or make shelter, remain in place, establish contact with other members of the party, keep moving, keep calm. Robert 'Doc' Wright, a veteran of Antarctic surveying, was there on the ice when the worst happened. He holds within him the complete story of that night—but depleted by the disaster, Wright is no longer able to communicate the truth. Instead, in the wake of the catastrophic expedition, he faces the most daunting adventure of his life: learning a whole new way to be in the world. Meanwhile Anna, his wife, must suddenly scramble to navigate the sharp and unexpected contours of life as a caregiver. From the Booker Prize-longlisted, American Academy of Arts & Letters Award-winning author of Reservoir 13, this is a novel every bit as mesmerizing as its setting. Tenderly unraveling different notions of heroism through the rippling effects of one extraordinary expedition on an ordinary family, Lean Fall Stand explores the indomitable human impulse to turn our experiences into stories—even when the words may fail us.
