Book excerpt: Somali is spoken by more than nine million people in the Horn of Africa and by expatriate communities in the Middle East, Europe and North America. It is the official language of Somalia and an important regional language in Ethiopia and Kenya. As a Cushitic language Somali is part of the great Afroasiatic language family whose other branches include Semitic, Berber, Chadic and Ancient Egyptian. This book provides a comprehensive description of the grammar of the language that will be of interest to non-specialists and linguists interested in typology and language comparison. The author's accessible investigation of the phonology, morphology, syntax and discourse structure allows the reader a clear view of the linguistic character of Somali and, through Somali, of a Cushitic language. A further important feature of the book is its use of authentic data from a range of sources, including prose, poetry and proverbs.

Book The History and Development of the Somali Script

Download or read book The History and Development of the Somali Script written by Suleiman Geddi Qayad and published by . This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After long discussion in deciding which script is to be adopted for the Somali language, It took its final turn in 1972 when the Somali orthography was written and became the official language for Somalia. After the collapse of the Somali central government in 1991 it negatively affected every aspect of Somali people's social, educational, political and economical development. In the last two decades many academic papers were written and a number of researches were conducted touching various topics of Somali orthography. This book will contribute to recreating the lost efforts and history of Somali script due to civil war, and will shed light on the history of the Somali orthography development upto its final shape. I am sure the university students, academics and general public alike will find it useful and will enrich their knowledge on this crucial period for Somali literary history. This book which was at first produced as a thesis shows that the Somali University students, especially those attending at Lafoole College of Education were keen to unearth the Somali knowledge and produce theses in different topics. Large section of Lafoole's library was specially created to be stored in these theses and hopefully it is not all lost in the civil war which ravaged the country. These theses had the potential to be used as the backbone of further research in various social, scientific and cultural topics. SULEIMAN GEDDI QAYAD was born in Borama in 1964 and completed his primary, intermediate and Secondary education in Hargeisa. He worked as a teacher at Aw-Osman Secondary school in Merca. Thereafter he enrolled at Somali National University, the College of Education studying History as a major subject area. At the same college, he was selected to be assistant Lecturer at Lafoole College of education, teaching Somali history. In 1989 he arrived in the Netherlands, and now resides in the UK with his family.

Book Somali English Phrasebook for School Use

Download or read book Somali English Phrasebook for School Use written by Ali Suleiman and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will be useful to Somali children who are new to schools in Britain and new to the English language, but who are able to read in their own language. The teachers should spend some time in showing the pupil how to use the book. The explanations at the beginning of each section will be useful in alerting the teacher to some of the things which the Somali speaker may find different or unusual about English. An example of this is the naming system, which is quite different in Somali culture. The teacher may also be able to use sections of the book, and vocabulary lists and tables at the back, as the basis for some sessions in teh language class.--page 1.
