Book Grocery Story

Download or read book Grocery Story written by Jon Steinman and published by New Society Publishers. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hungry for change? Put the power of food co-ops on your plate and grow your local food economy. Food has become ground-zero in our efforts to increase awareness of how our choices impact the world. Yet while we have begun to transform our communities and dinner plates, the most authoritative strand of the food web has received surprisingly little attention: the grocery store—the epicenter of our food-gathering ritual. Through penetrating analysis and inspiring stories and examples of American and Canadian food co-ops, Grocery Story makes a compelling case for the transformation of the grocery store aisles as the emerging frontier in the local and good food movements. Author Jon Steinman: Deconstructs the food retail sector and the shadows cast by corporate giants Makes the case for food co-ops as an alternative Shows how co-ops spur the creation of local food-based economies and enhance low-income food access. Grocery Story is for everyone who eats. Whether you strive to eat more local and sustainable food, or are in support of community economic development, Grocery Story will leave you hungry to join the food co-op movement in your own community.

Book Find Your First Professional Job 4th Edition

Download or read book Find Your First Professional Job 4th Edition written by Scott Weighart and published by . This book was released on 2013-08-19 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heart of the book remains unchanged: we still have plenty of hard-earned wisdom from co-op and internship professionals with decades of experience, covering the fundamentals of a job search and job performance. However, there are many significant additions, including guidance on: Job searches in the Digital Age, including LinkedIn profiles, online job sites, and how to get the attention of overwhelmed recruiters; How to handle a phone interview or Skype interview; The "Seven Deadly Sins of Cover Letters"; Capturing academic projects on a resume. The book now includes dozens of new contributions from co-op/internship educators, students, alumni, and employers. Charlie Bognanni of Northeastern University wrote a new appendix with specific tips for international students, and the UMass-Lowell team contributed several new tools and insights. Each chapter now ends with a "student roundtable" and "employer roundtable," where students will be able to read quite a few different perspectives on each chapter's topics. We also have updated the entire book to better reflect how technology has made it necessary to think a little differently about job search preparation, resumes, interviews, and job performance. --Description provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: Sadie Hooking up with my brother’s two best friends was a bad idea. But when the guy I’ve crushed on for ages stumbles on my stash of toys, and offers to teach me how much fun they are with a partner, there’s no way I’m saying no. Especially when his boyfriend wants to watch. It's just a one-time thing, though. Which is good, because I need headspace to focus on the Hollywood designer who’s trying to scam me and others like me out of our hard-earned money. She’s making my life a living hell for exposing her to the internet. Jax and Grayson offer a tempting distraction by exposing me. In my bedroom. At a company holiday party… If I can’t unravel how I feel about them, and sift through the Hollywood-style legal trouble we’ve brought crashing down around us, the only things I’ll be getting for Christmas are a broken career and a shattered heart. • Author : Jessica Gordon Nembhard

Download or read book Collective Courage written by Jessica Gordon Nembhard and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-06-13 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Collective Courage, Jessica Gordon Nembhard chronicles African American cooperative business ownership and its place in the movements for Black civil rights and economic equality. Not since W. E. B. Du Bois’s 1907 Economic Co-operation Among Negro Americans has there been a full-length, nationwide study of African American cooperatives. Collective Courage extends that story into the twenty-first century. Many of the players are well known in the history of the African American experience: Du Bois, A. Philip Randolph and the Ladies' Auxiliary to the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, Nannie Helen Burroughs, Fannie Lou Hamer, Ella Jo Baker, George Schuyler and the Young Negroes’ Co-operative League, the Nation of Islam, and the Black Panther Party. Adding the cooperative movement to Black history results in a retelling of the African American experience, with an increased understanding of African American collective economic agency and grassroots economic organizing. To tell the story, Gordon Nembhard uses a variety of newspapers, period magazines, and journals; co-ops’ articles of incorporation, minutes from annual meetings, newsletters, budgets, and income statements; and scholarly books, memoirs, and biographies. These sources reveal the achievements and challenges of Black co-ops, collective economic action, and social entrepreneurship. Gordon Nembhard finds that African Americans, as well as other people of color and low-income people, have benefitted greatly from cooperative ownership and democratic economic participation throughout the nation’s history.

Book From Clans to Co ops

Download or read book From Clans to Co ops written by Theodoros Rakopoulos and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Clans to Co-ops explores the social, political, and economic relations that enable the constitution of cooperatives operating on land confiscated from mafiosi in Sicily, a project that the state hails as arguably the greatest symbolic victory over the mafia in Italian history. Rakopoulos’s ethnographic focus is on access to resources, divisions of labor, ideologies of community and food, and the material changes that cooperatives bring to people’s lives in terms of kinship, work and land management. The book contributes to broader debates about cooperativism, how labor might be salvaged from market fundamentalism, and to emergent discourses about the ‘human’ economy.

Book excerpt: An electrifying debut novel that unfolds in the course of a single day inside one genteel New York City apartment building, as tensions between the building's super and his grown-up daughter spark a crisis that will, by day's end, change everything. Ruby has a strange relationship to privilege. She grew up the super's daughter in the basement of an Upper West Side co-op that gets more gentrified with each passing year. Though not economically privileged herself, her close childhood friendship with Caroline, the daughter of affluent tenants, and the mere fact of living in such a wealthy neighborhood, close to her beloved Natural History Museum, brought her certain advantages, even expectations. Naturally Ruby followed her dreams and took out loans to attend a prestigious small liberal arts college and explore her interest in art. But now, out of school for a while, she is no closer to her dream job, or anything resembling it, and she's been forced by circumstances to do the last thing she wanted to do: move back in with her parents, back into the basement. And Caroline is throwing one of her parties tonight, in her father's glorious penthouse apartment, a party Ruby looks forward to and dreads in equal measure. With a thriller's narrative control, The Party Upstairs distills worlds of wisdom about families, great expectations, and the hidden violence of class into the gripping, darkly witty story of a single fateful day inside the Manhattan co-op Ruby calls home.
