Book excerpt: Home... A word that can be a noun, an adjective, a verb, or an adverb, but all suggesting a sense of where one originated and where one belongs. This word can be used to describe a position in a game, instincts in the animal kingdom, a location on a computer screen, or the place where family gathers to support and celebrate one another. However, in our fractured world, filled with addiction, violence, illness, and broken relationships, too many are just wandering, lost, with no home, even when they find a roof over their heads. They look for a sense of belonging in groups and gangs where they hope for acceptance and support. Too many turn to drugs and alcohol to medicate their loneliness, some being drawn into the most sweeping opioid epidemic we have ever seen. What if we could find ways to create a stronger sense of "home" in our circles of influence? What if we learned how to open up the doors of our lives and bring people into the warmth and shelter that they have been looking for? What if we knew how to start conversations that would bring the issues of "finding home" to the forefront and help us find tools to assist those around us in building their own place of belonging? In the wake of losing her twenty-four-year-old son Nicolai to a fentanyl overdose, Tina Reiman began a journey to understand his struggle to find home. This path led her to reexamine what she believed about addiction, parenting, and love. One result was her establishment of a nonprofit dedicated to reducing addiction, homelessness, and suicide among the young men of her community through the coaching of those who understand "home."

Although they stress the clinical aspects of aphasia syndromes, they also review assessment techniques, linguistic analyses, problems of aphasia classification, and frequently occurring related disorders such as alexia, agraphia, alcalculia, and anomia. In addition, they examine commonly encountered speech disorders, neurobehavioral and psychiatric problems commonly associated with aphasia, and the language characteristics of aging and dementia. Rehabilitation and recovery are discussed, and a neural basis for aphasia and related problems is proposed. Neuropsychologists, neurologists, speech therapists, psychiatrists, and occupational therapists will find this book invaluable when dealing with language disorders resulting from brain disease or injury.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume of the series Human Brain Function: Assessment and Rehabilitation we cover the area of how brain function is assessed with behavioral or neuropsycholog ical instruments. These assessments are typically conducted by clinical neuropsy chologists or behavioral neurologists, and so we made an effort to present the somewhat differing approaches to these two related disciplines. Clinical neuropsy chologists are psychologists who typically utilize standardized tests, while behav ioral neurologists are physicians who generally assess brain function as part of the clinical neurological evaluation. Both approaches have much to offer. The basic assumption of neuropsychological assessment is that the brain is the organ of behavior, and therefore, the condition of the brain may be evaluated with behavioral measures. Neuropsychological tests are those measures found by re search to be particularly sensitive to alterations in brain function. An adequate neuropsychological test is a procedure that can be related to some objective mea sure of alteration in brain function. Over the years, these objective measures have changed, but generally involve documentation through direct observation of brain tissue, or through histological, pathological, neuroimaging, or other laboratory procedures. The methods described in the first two volumes of this series describe the neuroimaging procedures that are often used in the validation of neuropsycho logical tests.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the fantasies created in the mind of an apathetic church attendee who reimagines the possibility that Jesus in the New Testament was actually the creation of a famous Judean street performer, Yeshua is the story of how the character of Jesus in theater emerges as an iconic celebrity whose dramatic reenactments of well-known stories in the New Testament challenge and threaten the current social and political order of the first half of the century. The growing popularity of the Jesus character in Yeshua's performances occurs alongside his romantic relationship with Alexia, the daughter of a Roman aristocrat. As the crowds attending Yeshua's performances increase exponentially, they eventually capture the attention of the Roman emperor. After a series of dangerous encounters, death, and sacrifice, Yeshua's character will be revered in history for all of eternity as the one who inspired people beyond their imagination.
