Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Manchester lad's life in the early twentieth century - the slums, Smithfield market and the search for love... Billy Hopkins bases his engaging novel, Tommy's World, on the fascinating and inspiring life of his father Tommy, born in a Manchester slum in 1886. Perfect for fans of Lindsey Hutchinson and Maureen Lee. 'The characters will stay with you after you've finished the book, but what you won't be left with is the sickly sweet taste of nostalgia. If you like to learn something from a good story then this could well be the book for you' - The Bookbag Tommy Hopkins' early years aren't very promising. Born at the end of the nineteenth century in a slum district of Manchester, he's blessed with a loving, hard-working mam and dad, but they don't have two ha'pennies to rub together. The family is struck by tragedy not once but twice - but Tommy is a survivor. He quickly makes friends at school, and together they plot money-making schemes, settle scores and play lots of football. Then, at last, it's time to leave the playground behind. Denied the chance of a promising career as an engineer, Tommy finds employment at Manchester's Smithfield market and works his way up, finally becoming a porter. He's turning into a man, and amongst the young women who catch his eye is Kate Lally, who may just be the love of his life... What readers are saying about Tommy's World: 'Well written and the characters are just so great... you enter a different world when you read a Billy Hopkins book' 'Brilliant author, his books are really ones that you can't put down!' 'Tommy's World was superb. Fascinating detail about life as it was. Unputdownable'

Book excerpt: With her Jewish heritage forced into secrecy, Evelyn Sherwood lives a life of anger, bitterness and guilt behind an emotional fortress too thick for human intervention. A widow with a teenaged daughter, Evelyn has resigned herself to a self-inflicted isolation leaving her vulnerable to the sinister voice of the enemy who constantly reinforces her regret and shame. Having repeatedly rejected the prompting of her late husband to turn to the One who could provide the same peace he had found, Evelyn is now forced to live her life knowing it is too late to tell her husband her buried secrets and her reasons for rejecting his God. Come Find Me is a compelling story typifying the lives of those who, like Evelyn, may be struggling with a life void of hope and peace. As the events in Evelyn Sherwood's life unravel, readers are left wondering if they would have done things differently. Would they have been stronger? Would they have dealt with the truth sooner? Perhaps they may even wonder what could be holding them back from enjoying the life of abundance and joy God intends for them to live.

Download or read book Finding a Fallen Hero written by Bob Korkuc and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2014-10-22 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To all appearances, Anthony “Tony” Korkuc was just another casualty of World War II. A gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress, Korkuc was lost on a bombing mission over Germany, and his family believed that his body had never been recovered. But when they learned in 1995 that Tony was actually buried at Arlington National Cemetery, his nephew Bob Korkuc set out on a seven-year quest to learn the true fate of an uncle he never knew. Finding a Fallen Hero is a compelling story that blends a wartime drama with a primer on specialized research. Author Bob Korkuc initially set out to learn how his Uncle Tony came to rest at Arlington. In the process, he also unraveled the mystery of what occurred over the skies of Germany half a century ago. Korkuc dug up military documents and private letters and interviewed people in both the United States and Germany. He tracked down surviving crewmembers and even found the brother of the Luftwaffe pilot who downed the B-17. Dozens of photographs help readers envision both Tony Korkuc’s fateful flight and his nephew’s dogged search for the truth. A gripping chronicle of exhaustive research, Finding a Fallen Hero will strike a chord with any reader who has lost a family member to war. And it will inspire others to satisfy their own unanswered questions.
Download or read book Share a Mlkshake written by Cecil Thomas and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story begins in a farm area in rural Kentucky in the early fifties. It follows the journey of three sixteen-year-old close friends whose lives were upended by tragedy. Tommy met Luke and Rachel at a drive-in theater, where Tommy was the projectionist. The three teens quickly became close friends often going out for milkshakes together. Tommy and Rachel were attracted to one another but never acted upon their feelings because Rachel was Luke's girlfriend. The three of them gathered almost weekly on a nearby farm owned by Sarah and her husband. Sarah enjoyed seeing the kids and soon became a mother figure to them. Toward the end of their senior year of high school, Luke and Rachel went to a nearby city where Rachel underwent a botched abortion. Driving back, Rachel nearly died from bleeding, but that was not the worst part. They knew that their church would stone them to death. Tommy and Sarah persuaded Rachel and Luke to run away. They helped Rachel and Luke establish new identities, severed all ties with family and friends, and drove away to some unknown place. Sarah and Tommy grieved their departure but knew that it would save their lives. Sarah and Tommy maintained contact, and when Tommy became a single father of two in St. Louis, Sarah moved to St. Louis to help Tommy with his kids. Tommy was a successful professor, and Sarah managed their finances. Rachel (now Abby) and Luke (now Carl) escaped to Iowa, where Abby worked in a small medical clinic with one doctor. She and Carl lived on a farm which Carl managed. Carl died in an accident, leaving Abby with their two children. After fourteen years of separation and a bit of serendipity, Abby, a doctor, and Tommy meet at Stanford University. It was an unexpected and joyous reunion. Tommy and Abby quickly merged their families and, along with Sarah, settled in a house adjacent to the Stanford campus. They both enjoyed successful careers at Stanford and increased the size of their family to eight kids. Although far from rural Kentucky, where their journeys began, they still enjoyed sharing milkshakes.
