Book Corporate Reporting on the Internet

Download or read book Corporate Reporting on the Internet written by Hollis Ashbaugh Skaife and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Firms' use of the Internet to enhance the relevance of their financial reporting is examined. A firm is defined as practicing Internet Financial Reporting (IFR) when it provides in its web site either: 1. a comprehensive set of financial statements, 2. a link to its annual report elsewhere on the Internet, or 3. a link to the US Security and Exchange Commission's Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis and Retrieval system. While 70% of the firms in the sample engage in IFR, substantial variation in the quality of firms' IFR practices is found. Specifically, the variations in quality pertain to the timeliness and therefore, the usefulness of firms' financial reporting on the Internet. It is found that some firms provide more timely financial disclosures via the Internet while other firms report outdated financial data. It is observed that the usefulness of firms' financial reporting on the Internet depends on how easy it is to access that data, the amount of data disclosed and/or whether users can download or analyze the data.

Book Economic Consequences of Internet Financial Reporting

Download or read book Economic Consequences of Internet Financial Reporting written by Alfred Wagenhofer and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper considers two major economic effects created by the Internet for financial accounting and disclosure. First, the Internet changes the costs of information processes and with it the demand and supply of financial information in capital markets. Second, Internet financial reporting creates a demand for standardization, which has been taken up with the development of XBRL. It is argued that while XBRL is designed to standardize only the format of information, it will also standardize contents. Finally, the paper discusses the issue of assuring high quality Internet financial reporting.

Book The Global Findex Database 2017

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2011 the World Bank—with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation—launched the Global Findex database, the world's most comprehensive data set on how adults save, borrow, make payments, and manage risk. Drawing on survey data collected in collaboration with Gallup, Inc., the Global Findex database covers more than 140 economies around the world. The initial survey round was followed by a second one in 2014 and by a third in 2017. Compiled using nationally representative surveys of more than 150,000 adults age 15 and above in over 140 economies, The Global Findex Database 2017: Measuring Financial Inclusion and the Fintech Revolution includes updated indicators on access to and use of formal and informal financial services. It has additional data on the use of financial technology (or fintech), including the use of mobile phones and the Internet to conduct financial transactions. The data reveal opportunities to expand access to financial services among people who do not have an account—the unbanked—as well as to promote greater use of digital financial services among those who do have an account. The Global Findex database has become a mainstay of global efforts to promote financial inclusion. In addition to being widely cited by scholars and development practitioners, Global Findex data are used to track progress toward the World Bank goal of Universal Financial Access by 2020 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The database, the full text of the report, and the underlying country-level data for all figures—along with the questionnaire, the survey methodology, and other relevant materials—are available at www.worldbank.org/globalfindex.

Book Impact of Internet Financial Reporting on Emerging Markets

Download or read book Impact of Internet Financial Reporting on Emerging Markets written by Shirley A. Hunter and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Application of information technology to gain a competitive advantage is well known and often used by business firms in developed countries. A fairly recent technological development is use of the Internet to provide corporate financial information, that is, Internet financial reporting. The research question posited by this study is: Do investors value emerging market firms that attempt to reduce information asymmetry by using information technology? This study uses the efficient market hypothesis to test the effects of two economic events on the market returns of emerging markets firms that engage in Internet financial reporting. At the macro-economic level, the event date is defined as the date the country deregulated the telecommunications industry granting commercial access to Internet providers. At the micro-economic level, the event date is based on the firm's announcement of the launching of its website. This study offers empirical evidence of the longitudinal effects of Internet technology i.e., timely dissemination of financial information, on emerging markets. The analysis reveals positive dispersions in market price and volume around the event dates. Market performance of securities listed on emerging market stock exchanges does improve after commercialization of the Internet.

Download or read book The Robot Factory written by Joseph Ganem and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-27 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book exposes a disturbing misuse of the scientific method to advance policies and agendas that are in fact detrimental to both science and education. The author, a physics professor, examines two related trends in education – the practice of “data-driven” reform and the disparaging of the traditional liberal arts in favor of programs with a heavy emphasis on science and technology. Many of the reforms being foisted on educators have more in common with pseudo-science than real science. The reduction of education to a commodity, and the shilling of science as a means to enhance corporate profits, lead to an impoverished and stunted understanding of science in particular, and of education in general. How is it possible for: • schools with all students learning at grade-level to be rated as failing?• teachers to be rated as ineffective after all their students meet their learning outcomes?• rising grade-school math standards to result in more college students needing remedial math?• politicians to disparage scientists and their results but argue that more students should study science? These bizarre outcomes have happened and are the result of an education system that misuses and misrepresents math and science in the classroom and in crafting education policies. This book exposes the flawed and fallacious thinking that is damaging education at all levels throughout the United States, and makes a compelling case for rethinking the standardized, optimized, and quantified approaches in vogue in education today to accommodate the different needs of individual teachers and students.
