Download or read book Financial Reforms and Technical Efficiency in Indian Commercial Banking written by Aditi Bhattacharyya and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study we estimate technical efficiency of Indian commercial banks from 1989 to 2009, using a multiple-output generalized stochastic production frontier and analyze the effects of financial reforms on estimated efficiency. The generalized method estimates technical efficiency in the presence of multiple outputs, filling a gap in the existing literature. Our results show that Indian commercial banks were operating with 64% efficiency on average during the sample period. The initial phase of reform had a positive impact on while the later phase adversely affected technical efficiency of banks. Public sector banks show higher efficiency levels compared to private and foreign banks.

Book Deregulation and Efficiency of Indian Banks

Download or read book Deregulation and Efficiency of Indian Banks written by Sunil Kumar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to assess the efficacy of India’s financial deregulation programme by analyzing the developments in cost efficiency and total factor productivity growth across different ownership types and size classes in the banking sector over the post-deregulation years. The work also gauges the impact of inclusion or exclusion of a proxy for non-traditional activities on the cost efficiency estimates for Indian banks, and ranking of distinct ownership groups. It also investigates the hitherto neglected aspect of the nature of returns-to-scale in the Indian banking industry. In addition, the work explores the key bank-specific factors that explain the inter-bank variations in efficiency and productivity growth. Overall, the empirical results of this work allow us to ascertain whether the gradualist approach to reforming the banking system in a developing economy like India has yielded the most significant policy goal of achieving efficiency and productivity gains. The authors believe that the findings of this book could give useful policy directions and suggestions to other developing economies that have embarked on a deregulation path or are contemplating doing so.

Book Banking Sector Reforms in India and Performance Evaluation of Commercial Banks

Download or read book Banking Sector Reforms in India and Performance Evaluation of Commercial Banks written by Debaprosanna Nandy and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2010-07-29 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee on Financial System (CFS), popularly known as Narasimham Committee, was set up in 1991 to make recommendations for bringing about the necessary reforms in the financial sector. Narasimham Committee appraised and acknowledged the success and progress of Indian banks since the major banks were nationalized on 19 July 1969. Unfortunately, the developments were witnessed only in the field of expansion and spread of bank branches, generation of huge employment and mobilization of savings rather than also in improvement in efficiency. Besides, corruption, fraud, misutilization in public money, outdated technology, and politicization in policy making were found to be major drawbacks in the real progress of the banks. As the banking sector plays an important and crucial role in the economy of a country for its stabilization and balanced growth, major reforms were urgently needed, after 22 years of nationalization, to revive Indian banks. This was not only in the field of profitability, but also in the overall efficiency, viz., better management of non-performing assets (NPAs), satisfying capital requirements, increased cost effectiveness and control, enhanced customer service, improved technology, establishing competitive interest rate, effective man-power planning, introduction of asset-liability management, better productivity, launching new products, and becoming more competent to face the upcoming challenges and competition from foreign as well as private sector banks in the era of globalization and liberalization. The objectives of the study are to examine the need and relevance of reforms in Indian banks, to assess the efficiency and profitability of Indian banks during reforms from different perspectives, to discuss various issues of NPA management in the light of reforms, to measure the performance of the banks of West Bengal during the reforms, to analyse the role of information technology and its relevancy in Indian banks in the era of reforms, and to impart necessary suggestions for the improvement of the efficiency and profitability of Indian banks.

Book Financial Liberalization and Bank Efficiency

Download or read book Financial Liberalization and Bank Efficiency written by Ali Ataullah and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides a comparative analysis of evolution of technical efficiency in commercial banking industry in India and Pakistan during 1988-1998, a period characterised by far-reaching changes in financial sector brought about by financial liberalisation. Data Envelopment Analysis is applied to two alternative input-output specifications to measure technical efficiency, and to decompose technical efficiency into its two components, pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency. We also check the consistency of our estimated efficiency scores by examining their relationship with three traditional non-frontier measures of bank performance. In addition, we examine the relationship between bank size and technical efficiency. Our main findings are: (1) technical efficiency of overall commercial banking industry improved in both the countries; (2) public sector banks in India witnessed improvement in both pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency, (3) public sector banks in Pakistan witnessed improvement in scale efficiency only; (4) pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency of private sector banks, foreign and domestic, in both the countries improved after liberalisation; (5) due to high non-performing loans, banks are more efficient in generating loans and advances than in generating income from these assets, and (6) importance of size has declined after the implementation of financial liberalisation.

Book Banking System in India

Download or read book Banking System in India written by S. M. Jawed Akhtar and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to economic reforms initiated in early 1990s, the banking sector in India suffered from lack of competition, low capital base, inefficiency, and high intermediation costs. The banking industry - dominated by the public sector - was subject to a high degree of financial repression, characterized by administered interest rates and allocated credit. Reforms in India's commercial banking sector had two distinct phases. The first phase of reforms focused mainly on enabling and strengthening measures. The second phase of reforms placed greater emphasis on structural measures and improvement in standards of disclosure and levels of transparency in order to align India's standards with international best practices. Reforms have brought about considerable improvements, as reflected in various parameters relating to capital adequacy, asset quality, profitability, and operational efficiency. Although commercial banks still face the problem of overhang of non-performing assets, high spread, and low profitability in comparison with banks in other emerging market economies, India's reforms - which are examined in this book - have been successful in enhancing the performance of commercial banks in terms of both stability and efficiency parameters.

Book Efficiency of Indian Commercial Banks

Download or read book Efficiency of Indian Commercial Banks written by Surajit Bhattacharyya and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent times, Indian banks have resorted to mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in the expectation to reap efficiency gains brought in by such consolidation strategies. This paper explores the impact of M&A on technical efficiency of Indian commercial banks during the second decade (2000-2010) of reforms. We use data envelopment analysis (DEA) to compute the technical efficiency of banks that participated in M&A activities. The technical efficiency is computed under both common and separate frontier with the assumption of constant as well as variable returns to scale. We also compare the post-amalgamation efficiency scores of the participating banks with that of a control group comprising of such banks that did not undergo any consolidation since 1991. There have been efficiency gains for the merging and/or acquiring banks. At the same time there are banks that have experienced deterioration in their post-M&A average efficiency levels. It would be wise for the banks to carefully consider the potential gains as well as threats posed by M&A before venturing into such activities.

Book Commercial Banks in India

Book excerpt: Banking sector in India has undergone remarkable changes since the nationalisation of 14 major commercial banks in 1969. The geographical and functional coverage of banks has surged at a rate that is unprecedented in the world. Nationalisation of commercial banks in 1969 and 1980 was a mixed blessing. Reforms have brought about considerable improvements as reflected in various parameters relating to capital adequacy, asset quality, profitability and operational efficiency. Unfortunately, commercial banks continue to face the problem of non-performing assets (NPAs). The present volume deals with various aspects related to the development of commercial banks in India, with particular focus on post-liberalisation (1991 onwards) developments.

Book Financial Liberalisation and Bank Efficiency

We also check the consistency of our estimated efficiency scores by examining their relationship with three traditional non-frontier measures of bank performance. In addition, we examine the relationship between bank size and technical efficiency. We find that the overall technical efficiency of the banking industry of both countries improved gradually over the years, especially after 1995. Unlike public sector banks in India, public sector banks in Pakistan witnessed improvement in scale efficiency only. We also find that banks are relatively more efficient in generating earning assets than in generating income. We attribute this to the presence of high non-performing loans. In addition, we find that gap between the pure technical efficiency of different size groups has declined over the years.

Book Structural Reforms in Industry Banking and Finance

Download or read book Structural Reforms in Industry Banking and Finance written by C. Rangarajan and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2000 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 1991 marked an important watershed in the economic history of post-Independent India. The country went through a severe economic crisis triggered by a serious balance of payments situation. The crisis was converted into an opportunity to introduce some fundamental changes in the content and approach to economic policy. The purpose of this book is to detail the structural reform process undertaken by India and to evaluate its results. In the post-liberalization period, the country has moved to a higher growth path. Objective conditions exist for the economy to grow at a sustained rate of seven per cent. The slow growth in agriculture and the consequent impact of a slower decline in poverty reduction are areas of concern.

Book Technical Efficiency and its Decomposition in Indian Banks in Post Liberalisation

Download or read book Technical Efficiency and its Decomposition in Indian Banks in Post Liberalisation written by A Amarender A. Reddy and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper examined the competitiveness of Indian scheduled commercial banks in the deregulated period 1996-2002. The data used for the study has been collected from annual reports of Reserve Bank of India. Efficiency change, scale efficiency and pure technical efficiency change between two periods has been estimated by using data envelopment analysis and window analysis. Bank profitability increased and interest margins decreased in the deregulation period. The results indicate that there is an increase in technical efficiency and scale efficiency of most of the banks. The year-to-year variation in technical efficiency explained by variation in scale efficiency and general economic environment rather than variation in pure technical efficiency. Increasing asset quality and priority sector lending can improve scale efficiency. Most of the banks facing decreasing return to scale especially public sector banks due to wide spread bank branches with little interconnectivity. The foreign banks and new private banks exhibited most productive scale size, as they are new entrances into banking industry with well-interconnected bank branches than old private banks and public sector banks. Tobit analysis reveals that both pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency influenced negatively by number of branches per bank, whereas positively influenced by total assets. Share of priority sector advances and asset quality was having positive influence on scale efficiency.

Book An Innovative Method to Measure the Efficiency of Indian Commercial Banks DEA Approach

Download or read book An Innovative Method to Measure the Efficiency of Indian Commercial Banks DEA Approach written by Subramanyam T and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study proposes a three stage data envelopment analysis model to assess the efficiency of Indian commercial banks. 65 commercial banks comprising public, private and foreign sector banks were evaluated. This study proposed a new methodology to evaluate the efficiency of banks. The performance indicator variable NPA has been used to identify the environment of a bank. The overall technical efficiency is decomposed to scale, environmental risk and pure technical efficiency. The empirical results reveal that public sector banks hurt more from environmental risk inefficiency.

Book Financial Efficiency of Commercial Banks

Book excerpt: Banks are the main participants of the Indian financial system, because they play a vital role in the economy of a country. India is one of the most preferred banking destinations as its economy is not only growing at 8 percent annually, but it is also going through a transformation to the next level of maturity. After liberalization the banking sector underwent major changes and it has been totally changed after economic reforms. Always Indian banking industries were dominated by public sector banks because they play an important role in development of Indian economy. But now the situations have been changed after arrival of new generation banks that are known for technical and financial innovation and their professional management has gained a reasonable position in the banking sector. The main idea of this research article is to make an assessment of the financial performance of Indian Public sector banks & Private sector banks. This paper provides empirical evidence about the impact of financial liberalization and global recession on the performance of Indian commercial banks. The present study compares the performance of public sector banks with private banks under various accounting and statistical framework. The data used for the study were the audited financial results of a sample of 3 public banks and 3 private banks over the last three financial years.

Book Banking Efficiency and Financial Development in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Banking Efficiency and Financial Development in Sub Saharan Africa written by Sandrine Kablan and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study assesses the determinants of banking system efficiency in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and asks what, besides the degree of efficiency, explains the low level of financial development in the region. It uses stochastic frontier analysis to measure efficiency and a generalized method of moments system to explain financial development. SSA banks are found to be generally cost-efficient, but nonperforming loans undermine efficiency, which suggests that improvement in the regulatory and credit environments should improve efficiency. The political and the economic environment have held back financial development in SSA.

Book Indian Financial Sector

Download or read book Indian Financial Sector written by Rakesh Mohan and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-01-20 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper traces the story of Indian financial sector over the period 1950–2015. In identifying the trends and turns of Indian financial sector, the paper adopts a three period classification viz., (a) the 1950s and 1960s, which exhibited some elements of instability associated with laissez faire but underdeveloped banking; (b) the 1970s and 1980s that experienced the process of financial development across the country under government auspices, accompanied by a degree of financial repression; and (c) the period since the 1990s till date, that has been characterized by gradual and calibrated financial deepening and liberalization. Focusing more the third period, the paper argues that as a consequence of successive reforms over the past 25 years, there has been significant progress in making interest and exchange rates largely market determined, though the exchange rate regime remains one of managed float, and some interest rates remain administered. Considerable competition has been introduced in the banking sector through new private sector banks, but public sector banks continue have a dominant share in the market. Contractual savings systems have been improved, but pension funds in India are still in their infancy. Similarly, despite the introduction of new private sector insurance companies coverage of insurance can expand much further, which would also provide greater depth to the financial markets. The extent of development along all the segments of the financial market has not been uniform. While the equity market is quite developed, activities in the private debt market are predominantly confined to private placement form and continue to be limited to the bluechip companies. Going forward, the future areas for development in the Indian financial sector would include further reduction of public ownership in banks and insurance companies, expansion of the contractual savings system through more rapid expansion of the insurance and pension systems, greater spread of mutual funds, and development of institutional investors. It is only then that both the equity and debt markets will display greater breadth as well as depth, along with greater domestic liquidity. At the same time, while reforming the financial sector, the Indian authorities had to constantly keep the issues of equity and efficiency in mind.
