Book Financial Privacy Electronic Commerce

Download or read book Financial Privacy Electronic Commerce written by Benjamin E. Robinson, III and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-08-26 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The financial services sector has had a respectable track record in the protection of consumer privacy. However, business practices, industry consolidation, electronic commerce and economic trends have raised consumer privacy as a key issue in the financial services sector. Improvements in the rapid transfer of information provide a new medium for the purchase of goods and services, that is, the medium of electronic commerce. The European Union has forced the issue with the Data Protection Directive. As a result, the United States has had to debate the lack of regulation or standards governing the new medium of electronic commerce. The debate could hinder any advance by society to engage in new technology. Because of increased government attention through regulatory and legislative action, corporations are developing self-regulatory initiatives to create industry standards for electronic commerce. Consumer privacy deals with how and what types of information are collected and how the data is controlled and accessed. Consumer concepts of privacy will resist or allow different configurations of what is allowable and what is utilized. The book is an exploratory and descriptive study that assesses the privacy concerns of today's consumer, as well as determines the potential impact of consumer privacy concerns on technological innovation and public policy. In order to understand privacy concerns, the study builds and extends current quantitative research on privacy in the financial service sector. Current research was developed to assess the privacy concerns of consumers. It was not designed to analyze or evaluate the specific impact of privacy on underrepresented consumers. The study expands research to focus on this particular segment of the population. Using privacy as the foundational issue/motivation for developing perspectives on financial education, the study focuses on people of color in the financial mainstream of our economy.

Book None of Your Business

Download or read book None of Your Business written by Peter P. Swire and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historic European Union Directive on Data Protection will take effect in October 1998. A key provision will prohibit transfer of personal information from Europe to other countries if they lack “adequate” protection of privacy. If enforced as written, the Directive could create enormous obstacles to commerce between Europe and other countries, such as the United States, that do not have comprehensive privacy statutes. In this book, Peter Swire and Robert Litan provide the first detailed analysis of the sector-by-sector effects of the Directive. They examine such topics as the text of the Directive, the tension between privacy laws and modern information technologies, issues affecting a wide range of businesses and other organizations, effects on the financial services sector, and effects on other prominent sectors with large transborder data flows. In light of the many and significant effects of the Directive as written, the book concludes with detailed policy recommendations on how to avoid a coming trade war with Europe. The book will be of interest to the wide range of individuals and organizations affected by the important new European privacy laws. More generally, the privacy clash discussed in the book will prove a major precedent for how electronic commerce and world data flows will be governed in the Internet Age.

Book Perceived Information Security Financial Liability and Consumer Trust in Electronic Commerce Transactions

Download or read book Perceived Information Security Financial Liability and Consumer Trust in Electronic Commerce Transactions written by Ramnath Chellappa and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electronic commerce (EC) transactions are subject to multiple information security threats. Proposes that consumer trust in EC transactions is influenced by perceived information security and distinguishes it from the objective assessment of security threats. Proposes mechanisms of encryption, protection, authentication, and verification as antecedents of perceived information security. These mechanisms are derived from technological solutions to security threats that are visible to consumers and hence contribute to actual consumer perceptions. Tests propositions in a study of 179 consumers and shows a significant relationship between consumers' perceived information security and trust in EC transactions. Explores the role of limited financial liability as a surrogate for perceived security. However, the findings show that there is a minimal effect of financial liability on consumers' trust in EC. Engenders several new insights regarding the role of perceived security in EC transactions.

Book The New Legal Framework for E Commerce in Europe

Download or read book The New Legal Framework for E Commerce in Europe written by Lilian Edwards and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2005-12-19 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays by well known specialists in e-commerce and Internet law, drawn from both academe and practice, analyses recent crucial legislation which has created, for the first time, a legal regime governing European electronic commerce. The central focus is on the European Electronic Commerce Directive and its implementation in the UK since August 2002. The E-Commerce Directive develops a distinctive European strategy for regulating and promoting on-line business and the information society. Areas of the Directive analysed include contracting on-line, Internet service provider liability, consumer privacy including spam and 'cookies', country of origin regulation, and on-line alternative dispute resolution (ODR). Further chapters move beyond the Directive to discuss other important new laws in this domain, including the Privacy and Electronic Communications Directive, the Distance Selling Directives, the Electronic Money Directive, the Lawful Business regulations on employee surveillance, the disability discrimination rules affecting websites and the extension of VAT to on-line transactions. Both the European framework and the rules as implemented in the UK are examined and critiqued for how well they meet the needs of business and consumers.
