This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Financial History of the United States, From 1774 to 1789: Embracing the Period of the American Revolution The idea of unity of proportion has been kept in mind in the preparation of the work, which will explain why a few chapters, especially the one upon the Legal Tender Laws of the Revolution, were not extended beyond their present limits. To Mr. C. A. Cutter, Librarian of the Boston Athenaeum, the author feels deeply grateful for the exceedingly liberal use of books belonging to that association. This, he realizes, is a feeble acknowledgment to make for such valuable assistance doubtless a far greater satisfaction may be derived from know ing, that, if the work possesses any value, its readers are indebted to him for putting the author within convenient reach of much of the material found within these pages. To Mr. Robbins Little, Superintendent of the Astor Library, and to Mr. Frederick Saunders, Librarian of the same, the author would also express his heartiest thanks for the generous use of the books of that noble institution. Nor would he forget to acknowledge favors of a similar character on the part of the officers of the new-york Historical Library. Book The Financial History of the United States

Download or read book The Financial History of the United States written by Albert S. Bolles and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-28 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Financial History of the United States: From 1774 to 1885 When the second volume was published one critic remarked the author was only an annalist. The charge can be as truthfully made of this volume as of the other. Though such a method may show that he does not seem to be sufficiently equipped as an economist, he has attempted to do nothing more than to assemble the facts of our financial history in an orderly manner, uncolored by economic theories. N o attempt has been made to play the part of the dogmatist or the schoolmaster, or to make the crooked paths straight. If the author possesses economic opinions, he has had no desire to give them an airing in this volume, contenting himself with giving the facts lying within the proper field of inquiry, whatever they may be. Whether the facts are consistent is no concern of his; whether they sustain or undermine any economic or other principle that he may hold, is also, he believes, of small consequence to the public. The important thing is to state the facts fairly, and, as far as possible, their surroundings; and if, in attempting to do this, he has erred, correction shall be made as speedlly as possible. It may also be stated that the additions of figures in the tables include the cents which have been omitted. This statement is made here to avoid repetitions wherever the tables occur. It is no small pleasure to make a grateful acknowledgment to several gentlemen for many of the books used in preparing this volume, especially to Mr. Robbins Little, Superintendent of the Astor Library, Messrs. Lloyd P. Smith, Librarian, and George M. Abbott, Assistant-librarian of the Philadelphia Library, and Mr. Stone, Librarian of the Pennsylvania Historical Society. A large indebtedness is also due to Mr. Cannon, united-states Comptroller of the Currency, Mr. Whelpley, united-states Assistant-treasurer, and W. B. Greene, for furnishing figures and verifying statements. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Thirty Years of American Finance

Download or read book Thirty Years of American Finance written by Alexander Dana Noyes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-21 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty Years of American Finance: A Short Financial History of the Government and People of the United States Since the Civil War, 1865 1896 His book undertakes a single task: to narrate the series of events which in uenced American financial history between 1865 and 1897, and to point out clearly and concisely the relation of those events to one another. I have made no attempt at abstract economic argument; therefore the reader will not find in these pages discussion of theories such as bimetallism and protection. That the nar rative should repeatedly encounter these and other theories in active Operation, is of course inevitable; the purpose and results of such experiments will be fairly and fully examined; but this book is designed to do no more. It is'not an economic treatise; it is a history of our own times. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Forty Years of American Finance

Download or read book Forty Years of American Finance written by Alexander Dana Noyes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forty Years of American Finance: A Short Financial History of the Government and People of the United States Since, the Civil War 1865-1907 Since this book was first published in 1898, under the title Thirty Years of American Finance, I have been repeatedly urged to bring the history up to date, in order to cover the remarkable financial episodes of 1901 and afterward. The undertaking did not then seem, feasible, because the movement of events in one direction was so swift that, so to speak, no stopping-place was obtainable for a broad and comprehensive survey of the period. Such a stopping-place seems to have been provided by the panic of 1907. I have therefore undertaken to treat the ten years in American finance, which followed 1897, as I had already treated the thirty years preceding. I take this opportunity to thank the numerous educators, public men, and others who have written to me since the publication of the first edition, for their interest in, and appreciation of, what this book has endeavored to accomplish. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Financial History of Virginia, 1609-1776 If any tax me for wasting paper with recording these small matters, such may consider that small things in the begin ning of natural or political bodies are as remarkable as greater in bodies full grown. To, those gentlemen, in Virginia as well as in New York, who have been so unfailing in their courtesy to me, during the collection of the material for this sketch, I would acknowledge my sincere sense Of Obligation. The endeavor has been to justify, so far as possible, the assistance which they have so cordially rendered upon every occasion. Book Financial History of Ohio Classic Reprint

Download or read book Financial History of Ohio Classic Reprint written by Ernest Ludlow Bogart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Financial History of Ohio This work was begun some years ago at Oberlin Col lege; laid aside for more pressing duties, it has since been carried to completion, at odd intervals and for the most part at a distance from Ohio. For some of the short comings this may be held responsible. It is based almost exclusively upon official sources; these had remained prae tically unused in other publications relating to the state, and upon the latter therefore little reliance has been placed. In the present monograph two chapters, dealing respec tively with Internal Improvements and Local Finance, were omitted because of limitations of space; but it is hoped they may be published at some future time. A History of the State Debt of Ohio has already appeared in the Journal of Political Economy, April, May, June, 1911. Thanks are due the editor of the American Economic Review for permission to reprint part of an article entitled Recent Economic Reforms in Ohio, which appeared in September, 1911; and to the editor of the American His torical Review, for permission to reprint a part of the article Taxation of the Second Bank of the United States by Ohio, which appeared in January, 1912. Book FINANCIAL GIANTS OF AMER

Download or read book FINANCIAL GIANTS OF AMER written by George F. Redmond and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Financial Giants of America, Vol. 1 Convinced by years of thoughtful observation that the part played by these financial titans is far too little known, and with a definite purpose of bringing to the public a more intimate knowledge of these men, I determined to gather together the fragmentary data regarding them, and make available to those who might be interested in the subject a work which I hope may be of widespread interest. This collection of biographical sketches is without literary style or originality of phrase, but let it be understood that the author makes no pretensions to literary ability. Perhaps por tions of the collection represent an oft-told tale. Frankly, I have drawn from time to time upon others who have been pur suing a similar line of investigation. To these my apologies and thanks are offered, my position being merely that of a gatherer of widely scattered information. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Money in the British Empire and the United States The aim of this book is to give a short general history of money in the English-speaking countries - in the British Empire and the United States. The student is better provided with text-books on American than on English monetary history. For the latter there are at his disposal, on the one hand, books on general political and economic history of which the history of money forms comparatively only a small part, and, on the other hand, books on the various branches of the subject - on coins, prices and banking; but he finds a real difficulty in getting in any convenient compass a general knowledge of the financial development of the country.
