Book Financial Dollarization and Currency Substitution in Turkey

Download or read book Financial Dollarization and Currency Substitution in Turkey written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study aims to investigate currency substitution and financial dollarization in Turkey. The extend of dollarization in Turkey appears to be very high according to both the conventional currency substitution and the recently developed financial dollarization measures. This has serious policy implications as a source of financial fragility through currency/maturity mismatches and balance sheet effects. The empirical part of this study contained an investigation of the long run relationships between the variables in a system containing currency substitution ratio, expected exchange rate change and rates of return on domestic and foreign currency denominated assets. The results of the Johansen cointegration analysis based on quarterly data for the 1987-2004 period appeared not to be strongly supporting the General Portfolio Balance Model (GPBM). The theoretical part of this study suggests that the GPBM can be reduced to the Sequential Portfolio Balance Model (SPBM) under the uncovered interest parity (UIP) hypothesis. Consequently, the GPBM may be misleading under UIP. The Johansen cointegration results suggested the validity of the UIP for the Turkish data. The estimation of the SPBM suggested that there is a long-run relationship between currency substitution and expected exchange rate change in Turkey. The elasticity of currency substitution appeared to be high but consistent with those estimated for other high inflation developing countries. The results further supported the presence of a ratchet/hysteresis effect proxied by a trend variable. All these results are consistent with the argument that currency substitution and financial dollarization are important especially in high inflation countries.

Book Understanding Dollarization

Download or read book Understanding Dollarization written by Emre Ozsoz and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-05-24 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A very commonly observed phenomenon in developing and emerging market economies is the use of another country’s currency (whether the US dollar or another currency) in lieu or in addition to the local currency. The most common type of this financial phenomenon is partial (de facto) dollarization where foreign currencies are used side by side with local currency for saving and borrowing purposes in addition to serving as medium of exchange. Governments in these countries have been encouraging dollarization for years by allowing their citizens to save and borrow from local banks in foreign currency. Yet the existence of multiple currencies on banks' balance sheets on both the asset and liability side poses risks to the health and stability of the banking system. This book evaluates the practical aspects of partial dollarization in countries such as Turkey, South Korea, Peru, and Cambodia among others. Starting with the origins of the phenomenon, the impact on banking systems and financial depth of the credit markets are discussed along with risks to the banking systems. Challenges faced by Central Banks and banking regulators are evaluated using recent country studies.

Book Exchange Rate Movements Inflation Expectations and Currency Substitution in Turkey

Download or read book Exchange Rate Movements Inflation Expectations and Currency Substitution in Turkey written by Mr.Fabio Scacciavillani and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1995-11-01 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper contains an empirical analysis of currency substitution in Turkey: a simple relationship between the share of foreign currency holdings in M2X on one side and movements in the exchange rate or inflation on the other is derived from a two-stage portfolio choice model. This relationship is estimated by band spectrum regression which allows to remove from the data the short-term cyclical components. The results show that the relationship between currency substitution depends mainly on long-term movements in the exchange rate, while the effect of inflation on currency substitution is not statistically significant.

Book Monetary Policy in Dollarized Economies

Download or read book Monetary Policy in Dollarized Economies written by Mr.Adam Bennett and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1999-03-15 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dollarization - the holding by residents of a substantial portion of their assets in foreign-currency-denominated assets- is a common feature of developing and transition economies, and therefore typical of many countries with IMF - supported adjustment programs. This paper analyzes policy issues that arise-and various monetary strategies that may be pursued- when the monetary sector is dollarized, and it considers the implications that dollarization has for the design of IMF programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides a summary of the key policies that encourage dedollarization. It focuses on cases in which the authorities’ intention is to gain greater control of monetary policy and draws on the experiences of countries that have successfully dedollarized. Unlike previous work on the subject, this paper examines both macroeconomic stabilization policies and microeconomic measures, such as prudential regulation of the financial system. This study is also the first attempt to make extensive use of the foreign exchange regulation data reported in the IMF’s Annual Report on Exchange Arrangements and Exchange Restrictions. The main conclusion is that durable dedollarization depends on a credible disinflation plan and specific microeconomic measures.

Book An Econometric Investigation of Dollarization in Egypt

Download or read book An Econometric Investigation of Dollarization in Egypt written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In countries with underdeveloped financial markets, interest rate restrictions, depreciating currency and high rates of inflation, the store of value function of domestic money is disabled. Consequently, foreign money becomes the only alternative liquid form of financial wealth. Contradicting existing empirical results on Egypt, our results for the period 1981-1993 provide evidence on the importance of the rate of return on foreign currency deposits in determining the demand for these deposits. Therefore, foreign currency deposits are held to protect wealth (dollarization) rather than to facilitate transactions (currency substitution). These results imply that foreign currency deposits should not be included in transactions oriented monetary aggregates when trying to assess the proper instruments and channels of monetary policy"--Economic Research Forum for the Arab Countries, Iran and Turkey web site.

Book Dollarization

Download or read book Dollarization written by Eduardo Levy Yeyati and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical and empirical analysis of de jure dollarization. With the persistent instability of international financial markets, emerging economies are exploring new ways to reduce exposure to capital flow volatility. Some analysts argue that financially open economies are best served by more flexible regimes, while others argue in favor of extreme exchange rate regimes that have a strong commitment to a fixed parity or dispense with an independent currency. The successful launch of the euro has made more realistic the prospect of replacing a national currency with a strong foreign one. Recent examples include the adoption of the US dollar by Ecuador and El Salvador. The introduction of a foreign currency as sole legal tender, termed full (de jure) dollarization, has been the center of much political and academic debate. This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the issues from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. The topics discussed include the role of balance sheet effects, the linkage between currency risk and country risk, the impact of dollarization on trade, financial integration and credibility, the implications of dollarization for the lender of last resort, and the institutional and political economy aspects of dollarization.

Book Inflation Targeting and Exchange Rate Management In Less Developed Countries

Download or read book Inflation Targeting and Exchange Rate Management In Less Developed Countries written by Mr.Marco Airaudo and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-03-08 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We analyze coordination of monetary and exchange rate policy in a two-sector model of a small open economy featuring imperfect substitution between domestic and foreign financial assets. Our central finding is that management of the exchange rate greatly enhances the efficacy of inflation targeting. In a flexible exchange rate system, inflation targeting incurs a high risk of indeterminacy where macroeconomic fluctuations can be driven by self-fulfilling expectations. Moreover, small inflation shocks may escalate into much larger increases in inflation ex post. Both problems disappear when the central bank leans heavily against the wind in a managed float.

Book Financial De Dollarization

Download or read book Financial De Dollarization written by Mr.Luis Catão and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We re-appraise the cross-country evidence on the dollarization of financial systems in emerging market economies. Amidst striking heterogeneity of patterns across regions, we identify a broad global trend towards financial sector de-dollarization from the early 2000s to the eve of the global financial crisis of 2008–09. Since then, de-dollarization has broadly stalled or even reversed in many economies. Yet a few of them have continued to de-dollarize. This suggests that domestic factors are also important and interact with global factors. To gain insight into such an interaction, we examine the experience of Peru since the early 1990s and find that low global interest rates, low global risk-aversion, and high commodity prices have fostered de-dollarization. Domestic macro-prudential measures that raise the relative cost of domestic dollar loans and the introduction and adherence to inflation targeting have also been key.

Book Financial Programming and Policy the Case of Turkey Reprint

The book presents a series of workshops that explain the accounting identities, behavioral relationships, and forecasting techniques that underlie the constuction of a financial program. The workshops use the case of Turkey to illustrate the techniques, and the complete data set for Turkey is included on a diskette (supplied in a back-cover pocket).

Book Dollarization and Financial Development

Download or read book Dollarization and Financial Development written by Mr.Geoffrey J Bannister and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite significant strides in financial development over the past decades, financial dollarization, as reflected in elevated shares of foreign currency deposits and credit in the banking system, remains common in developing economies. We study the impact of financial dollarization, differentiating across foreign currency deposits and credit on financial depth, access and efficiency for a large sample of emerging market and developing countries over the past two decades. Panel regressions estimated using system GMM show that deposit dollarization has a negative impact on financial deepening on average. This negative impact is dampened in cases with past periods of high inflation. There is also some evidence that dollarization hampers financial efficiency. The results suggest that policy efforts to reduce dollarization can spur faster and safer financial development.
