Book Financial Systems in Developing Economies

Download or read book Financial Systems in Developing Economies written by Robert M. Townsend and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-01-06 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unique in its approach and in the variety of methods and data employed, this book is the first of its kind to provide an in-depth evaluation of the financial system of Thailand, a proto-typical Asian developing economy. Using a wealth of primary source qualitative and quantitative data, including survey data collected by the author, it evaluates the impact of specific financial institutions, markets for credit and insurance, and government policies on growth, inequality, and poverty at the macro, regional, and village level in Thailand. Useful not only as a guide to the Thai economy but more importantly as a means of assessing the impact that financial institutions and policy variation can have at the macro- and micro-level, including the distribution of gains and losses, this book will be invaluable to academics and policymakers with an interest in development finance.

Book excerpt: Why has public policy had only an indirect impact on Thailand¿s considerable developmentNULL This comprehensive report points to policy differences within the country¿s government. First it describes macroeconomic policies that advanced private enterprises, promoted universal education, and created productive state-owned companies. Then the report compares these policies with government interventions that--until recently--heavily favored capital-intensive industries over agriculture and labor-intensive manufacturing. Thailand¿s successful economic adjustment program is also examined. This program produced double-digit growth rates in the late 1980s by opening trade, expanding labor-intensive exports, and encouraging foreign direct investment.

Book External Finance in Thailand s Development

Download or read book External Finance in Thailand s Development written by Karel Jansen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1987 and 1990 Thailand experienced double-digit growth, fed by high capital inflows. This made Thailand one of the first developing countries to recover from the recession of the 1980s. Since 1990 growth and capital inflows have continued at a high level. The book makes a detailed study of the macroeconomic impact of capital inflows during recent years and during an earlier period when growth, and capital inflows, were high, in the late 1970s. It is shown that the results of the recent period are more sustainable than those of the earlier period, due to the differences in the nature of capital inflows, in external conditions, and in economic policies.

Book Banks Financial Development and Regional Growth

Download or read book Banks Financial Development and Regional Growth written by Saovanee Chantapong and published by Peter Lang Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work deals with finance and banking and the linkage between finance and economic growth in Thailand. Notwithstanding a strong reserve position and macroeconomic performance between mid-1980s and mid-1990s, the Thai economy in 1997 suffered the worst twin crisis in its history. This raises many related questions. What made the favourable performance disappear within a few years? What can we do to prevent financial crises in the future? Did the expanded participation of foreign banks in the Thai banking industry after the crisis lead to efficiency gains? And more generally, are there long-run effects of financial development on real economic growth? This work is intended to answer these questions. The main finding is that the growth rates of regional real incomes in Thailand during 1981 and 2003 are significantly negatively related to the initial level of regional real incomes as expected from unconditional convergence in growth theory. Based on the concept of conditional convergence, the results show that there is a divergence of regional real incomes in Thailand during 1994 and 2003, i.e. after controlling the differences in financial development, the richer ones grew faster. Based on the Granger causality test results, there is a bi-directional causality between finance and growth. Although this work is based on the case of Thailand, international evidence and comparisons are also included.

Download or read book How Land Registration Affects Financial Development and Economic Growth in Thailand written by Frank F.K. Byamugisha and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land registration in Thailand has significant positive long-run effects on financial development and economic growth.Using an economywide conceptual framework, the author analyzes how land registration affects financial development and economic growth in Thailand. He uses contemporary techniques, such as error correction and co-integration, to deal with such problems as time-series data not being stationary. He also uses the auto-regressive distributed lag model to analyze long lags in output response to changes in land registration. His key findings:-Land titling has significant positive long-run effects on financial development.-Economic growth responds to land titling following a J curve, by first registering a fall and recovering gradually, thereafter to post a long, strong rally.-The quality of land registration services, as measured by public spending on land registration, has strongly positive and significant long-run effects on economic growth. This paper - a product of the Rural Development and Natural Resources Sector Unit, East Asia and Pacific Region - is part of a larger effort in the region to increase the effectiveness of country assistance strategies in the area of property rights and economic development. Book Financing Development and the Financial Crisis of Thailand

Download or read book Financing Development and the Financial Crisis of Thailand written by Kazi N. Islam and published by National Library of Canada = Bibliothèque nationale du Canada. This book was released on 2002 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our findings indicate that the prime causes of the crisis in Thailand were as follows: the mismatching of domestic economic policies with a changed global economic climate; excessive praise of Thailand's & ldquo;miracle & rdquo; economy; the pro-cyclicality of consumer spending; the crowding-out effect of foreign saving; and the speculative behaviours of investors. The IMF's billion-dollar rescue package in the aftermath of the crisis failed to improve the situation because of the inappropriate conditions imposed on Thailand in return for these loans.

Book Financial Development and Monetary Policy in Thailand

Download or read book Financial Development and Monetary Policy in Thailand written by June Nualtaranee and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chapter 3 examines the causal relationship between development in the financial sector and economic growth using a cointegration method, error correction model, Granger causality test, variance decomposition, and impulse response functions. The results show that commercial banks have been the most important financial institutions, serving as an engine that has driven economic development. Other financial institutions such as finance and securities companies may also have complementary effects over the period of their rapid development that followed the economic boom in 1987.

Book The Politics of Uneven Development

Download or read book The Politics of Uneven Development written by Richard F. Doner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-09 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do some middle-income countries diversify their economies but fail to upgrade – to produce world-class products based on local inputs and technological capacities? Why have the 'little tigers' of Southeast Asia, such as Thailand, continued to lag behind the Newly Industrializing Countries of East Asia? Richard Doner goes beyond 'political will' by emphasizing institutional capacities and political pressures: development challenges vary; upgrading poses tough challenges that require robust institutional capacities. Such strengths are political in origin. They reflect pressures, such as security threats and resource constraints, which motivate political leaders to focus on efficiency more than clientelist payoffs. Such pressures help to explain the political institutions – 'veto players' – through which leaders operate. Doner assesses this argument by analyzing Thai development historically, in three sectors (sugar, textiles, and autos) and in comparison with both weaker and stronger competitors (Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, Brazil, and South Korea).
