This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the emerging global landscape for public-private co-investments in infrastructure. The creation of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and other so-called “infrastructure investment platforms” are an attempt to tap into the pool of both public and private long-term savings in order to channel the latter into much needed infrastructure projects. This paper puts these new initiatives into perspective by critically reviewing the literature and experience with public private partnerships in infrastructure. It concludes by identifying the main challenges policy makers and other actors will need to confront going forward and to turn infrastructure into an asset class of its own.

Book Finance and Growth

Download or read book Finance and Growth written by Ross Levine and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This paper reviews, appraises, and critiques theoretical and empirical research on the connections between the operation of the financial system and economic growth. While subject to ample qualifications and countervailing views, the preponderance of evidence suggests that both financial intermediaries and markets matter for growth and that reverse causality alone is not driving this relationship. Furthermore, theory and evidence imply that better developed financial systems ease external financing constraints facing firms, which illuminates one mechanism through which financial development influences economic growth. The paper highlights many areas needing additional research"--NBER website

Book Campaign contribution limits discussion paper

Book excerpt: Local Government Elections Task Force Campaign Contribution Limits Discussion Paper January 2010 Local Government Elections Issue: Campaign Contribution Limits Issue Summary Contribution limits are restrictions on one or both of who can contribute and how much can be contributed in relation to an election campaign. [...] Those in favor of limits also assert that well designed rules could mitigate the risk of increased "flow through" contributions and that the benefits of contribution limits outweigh the administrative challenges. [...] Under the legislation, a campaign contribution is defined as the amount of any money or the value of any property or services provided to a candidate, elector organization or campaign organizer for use in an election campaign. [...] While contribution issues attracted more media attention following the 2008 elections than usual, it is important to note that relatively speaking, the concerns do not appear to be widespread considering that over 1,600 elected positions (for over 250 government bodies) are filled using the campaign finance provisions of the Local Government Act and the Vancouver Charter. [...] Generally speaking, those in favour of contribution limits argue that they are necessary to reduce the 2. Both the City of Toronto and the City of Winnipeg have implemented contribution limits using their own legislation.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Professional Economic Ethics

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Professional Economic Ethics written by George DeMartino and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 801 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a century the economics profession has extended its reach to encompass policy formation and institutional design while largely ignoring the ethical challenges that attend the profession's influence over the lives of others. Economists have proven to be disinterested in ethics. Embracing emotivism, they often treat ethics a matter of mere preference. Moreover, economists tend to be hostile to professional economic ethics, which they incorrectly equate with a code of conduct that would be at best ineffectual and at worst disruptive to good economic practice. But good ethical reasoning is not reducible to mere tastes, and professional ethics is not reducible to a code. Instead, professional economic ethics refers to a new field of investigation-a tradition of sustained and lively inquiry into the irrepressible ethical entailments of academic and applied economic practice. The Oxford Handbook of Professional Economic Ethics explores a wide range of questions related to the nature of ethical economic practice and the content of professional economic ethics. It explores current thinking that has emerged in these areas while widening substantially the terrain of economic ethics. There has never been a volume that poses so directly and intensively the question of the need for and content of professional ethics for economics. The Handbook incorporates the work of leading scholars and practitioners, including academic economists from various theoretical traditions; applied economists, beyond academia, whose work has direct and immense social impact; and philosophers, professional ethicists, and others whose work has addressed the nature of "professionalism" and its implications for ethical practice.
