Download or read book Ma trise de l espace et d veloppement en Afrique written by and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 2010 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book The Anthropology of Africa Challenges for the 21st Century written by Nchoji Nkwi and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2015-02-02 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1999 (August 30 September 2) the Pan African Anthropological Association (PAAA) marked the 10th anniversary of its creation by holding its 9th Annual Conference in Yaounde, Cameroon the city and country of its birth. The conference, themed The Anthropology of Africa: Challenges for the 21st Century, was attended by some seventy participants, mostly African. Among the international participants was Dr Sydel Silverman, President of the Wenner Gren Foundation at the time a long term partner of the PAAA; she was present at the inaugural conference in 1988. The conference proceedings were initially published in 2000 with very limited circulation. Given the continued relevance of the papers presented, and in view of the call by the President of the PAAA for African anthropologists to reunite anthropological theory and practice in the teaching programmes of African universities, the PAAA is pleased to republish the proceedings of its landmark 9th Annual Conference. The book consists of forty three chapters divided into eight parts, namely: i) teaching anthropology in the decades ahead; ii) Health Challenges: HIV/AIDS Anthropological Perspectives; iii) NGOS: Use and Misuse of Anthropology; iv) Anthropological Focus on Environment; v) Some Applied Issues in Anthropology; vi) The African Family in Crisis; vii) Ethnicity and Ethnic Conflicts; and viii) Population issues and anthropology: Fertility Crisis. Paul Nkwi concludes his introduction to the volume with these words: The Anthropology of Africa will remain for a long time, fundamentally applied if it is to meet the challenges of the 21st Century.

Download or read book Private and Public Sectors written by Karl Wohlmuth and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2004 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The African Development Perspectives Yearbook series fills a gap in the literature on Africa's development problems. Experts from African institutions and regional organisations, from international organisations, from universities and research institutions, from governmental and non-governmental organisations, and from the donor community analyse issues and report on problems and solutions, on new policies, programmes, projections and visions, and on new and ongoing projects in and for Africa. Various levels of action that are relevant for Africa's development are considered in this Yearbook - the international community in its relation to Africa, interregional and national issues of Africa's development, but also local projects and local development achievements are documented. Africa's development perspectives are therefore analysed and commented from the global to the local space, by presenting analytical surveys and policy statements, declarations and programmes of international, regional, national and voluntary organisations. It is also the purpose of the African Development Perspectives Yearbook to establish a news-and-information network, a forum for international communication on Africa's development perspectives. This tenth volume presents analyses, policy-oriented papers, development projections, and proposals for reforms with regard to the role of public and private sectors in Africa. The balance between private and public sector development in Africa is challenging due to a rapidly changing international environment in the era of globalisation. It discusses the role of the private sector, the functions of the private sector institutions, the state of the privatisation programmes, and the importance of a strengthening of public policies, public infrastructures and public institutions in Africa.

Download or read book The Handbook Of Microfinance written by Beatriz Armendariz and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011-04-28 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Microfinance showcases an expansive collection of works from leading academics and field practitioners. In an attempt to understand the enormous gap between the limited number of clients that are currently benefiting from microfinance services, and the huge number of potential clients that are not, the selected contributions in this comprehensive handbook have one common thread: the prevailing mismatch between demand by clients of microfinance institutions and potential clients selecting themselves out for their demand for a wider array of financial products which is not being met.The scope of the book is wide, and explores successes and failures, main challenges and debates, methodologies for impact evaluation via random trials, leading trends in Asia versus Latin America, main efforts in Africa, the importance of value chains in Central America, ethical and gender issues, savings, microinsurance, governance, commercialization trends and the potential advantages and disadvantages of it. This exhaustive Handbook also features main lessons from informal finance and 19th-century credit cooperatives addressing the above-mentioned mismatch.

Download or read book Carbon Conflicts and Forest Landscapes in Africa written by Melissa Leach and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amidst the pressing challenges of global climate change, the last decade has seen a wave of forest carbon projects across the world, designed to conserve and enhance forest carbon stocks in order to reduce carbon emissions from deforestation and offset emissions elsewhere. Exploring a set of new empirical case studies, Carbon Conflicts and Forest Landscapes in Africa examines how these projects are unfolding, their effects, and who is gaining and losing. Situating forest carbon approaches as part of more general moves to address environmental problems by attaching market values to nature and ecosystems, it examines how new projects interact with forest landscapes and their longer histories of intervention. The book asks: what difference does carbon make? What political and ecological dynamics are unleashed by these new commodified, marketized approaches, and how are local forest users experiencing and responding to them? The book’s case studies cover a wide range of African ecologies, project types and national political-economic contexts. By examining these cases in a comparative framework and within an understanding of the national, regional and global institutional arrangements shaping forest carbon commoditisation, the book provides a rich and compelling account of how and why carbon conflicts are emerging, and how they might be avoided in future. This book will be of interest to students of development studies, environmental sciences, geography, economics, development studies and anthropology, as well as practitioners and policy makers.
