Book Finance and Trade Under Edward III

Download or read book Finance and Trade Under Edward III written by George Unwin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Finance and Trade Under Edward III: By Members of the History School Some five or six years ago a plan was formed to illustrate a dozen or more different aspects of 14th century history by the publication of work done by graduates of the History School of Manchester University. The war has seriously hindered the realization of the project, and this volume represents merely an instalment of it. Apart from my own contributions, each of the studies here presented is based on a thesis prepared for the History Schools of 1911 and 1912. Their separate publication in advance of the rest may plead the justification of a certain unity of subject. They deal with various economic aspects of the reign of Edward III, and the writers, with one exception, were members not only in Professor Tout's honours class in the Early part of the reign of Edward III, but of my honours class in Economic History. It has thus fallen to my lot to advise their postgraduate researches and to edit this volume. The two articles on The Social Evolution of Mediaeval London and London Tradesmen and their Creditors, though falling somewhat outside the scope of the book as indicated by its title, have been included in the hope that they might supply a broader introduction to some of the special problems dealt with in the subsequent studies. As will perhaps be apparent to the critical reader, they were both originally prepared for oral delivery - the former as one of the Warburton Lectures of 1911 and the latter as a paper read before the Manchester University Historical Society in the following session. Of the remaining articles, that on The Estate of Merchants was the last to be written, and aimed, along with the Introduction, at providing a tentative survey of the reign as a whole. Book Edward III and the War at Sea

Download or read book Edward III and the War at Sea written by Graham Cushway and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the war at sea in the reign of Edward III, including the important sea battles, and an analysis of the development of the English navy in the period. This book describes naval warfare during the opening phase of the Hundred Years War, a vital period in the development of the early Royal Navy, in which Edward III's government struggled to harness English naval power in a dramatic battle for supremacy with their French and Spanish adversaries. It shows how the escalating demands of Edward's astonishing military ambitions led to an intense period of evolution in the English navy and the growth of a cultureof naval specialism and professionalism. It addresses how this in turn affected the livelihoods of England's mariners and coastal communities. The book covers in detail the most important sea battles of Edward III's reign -Sluys, Winchelsea and La Rochelle - as well as raids and naval blockades. It highlights the systems by which ships were brought into service and mariners recruited, and explores how these were resisted by mariners and coastal communities. It also tells the story of the range of personalities, heroes and villains who influenced the development of the navy in the reign of Edward III. GRAHAM CUSHWAY holds a PhD in Maritime History from the University of Exeter.

Book Money and Banking in Medieval and Renaissance Venice

Download or read book Money and Banking in Medieval and Renaissance Venice written by Frederic Chapin Lane and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2020-03-24 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1985. Frederic C. Lane and Reinhold C. Mueller, in the first volume of Money and Banking in Medieval and Renaissance Venice, discuss Venice's economic achievement in terms of the complex system the city's inhabitants developed to manage moneys of account and coins. Money merchants of Venice developed a system whereby a premium attached to moneys of account acted as a stabilizing force and allowed merchants to engage in long-term trade. This system, according to the authors, helped establish Venice as a dominant city-state in international trade and exchange. This book outlines the development and success of this system through 1508. At the time it was first published, this book made a significant contribution to the history of money and economics by underscoring the large role that Venice played in the economic history of the West and the ascendance of capitalism as a structuring force of society.

Book The English Wool Trade in the Middle Ages

Download or read book The English Wool Trade in the Middle Ages written by T. H. Lloyd and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1977 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive account of the wool trade through the whole of the medieval period. Within England it is concerned with the production and marketing of wool and with the ways in which the wool trade influenced the economic and political fortunes of different sectors of society. It describes and analyses in detail each of the periods of growth and decline in the export market. As well as explaining changes in the volume of trade it offers the first attempt to portray the distribution of the trade among individual merchants. As the scene widens Mr. Lloyd explains how England's relations with other European powers were influenced by mutual interest in the state of the wool trade. Another major theme is the influence which the export of wool exerted on England's economy as a whole.
