Download or read book Groundwater Depletion in the United States 1900 2008 written by Leonard F Konikow and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A natural consequence of groundwater withdrawals is the removal of water from subsurface storage, but the overall rates and magnitude of groundwater depletion in the United States are not well characterized. This study evaluates long- term cumulative depletion volumes in 40 separate aquifers or areas and one land use category in the United States, bringing together information from the literature and from new analy- ses. Depletion is directly calculated using calibrated ground- water models, analytical approaches, or volumetric budget analyses for multiple aquifer systems. Estimated groundwater depletion in the United States during 1900-2008 totals approx- imately 1,000 cubic kilometers (km3). Furthermore, the rate of groundwater depletion has increased markedly since about 1950, with maximum rates occurring during the most recent period (2000-2008) when the depletion rate averaged almost 25 km3 per year (compared to 9.2 km3 per year averaged over the 1900-2008 timeframe).

Download or read book Particle Flux in the Ocean written by Venugopalan Ittekkot and published by . This book was released on 1996-08-22 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particle flux in the ocean is a major segment linking terrestrial, meteorological and surface ocean processes with those operating in the deep sea. This book describes how wind speeds and dust fallout over the oceans, volcanic eruptions and freshwater and suspended matter inputs from rivers influence material flux to the ocean's interior and its variability. It explores the potential use of deep ocean particle flux studies to record and monitor climatic and environmental changes.

Download or read book Remediation and Management of Degraded River Basins written by Vladimir Novotny and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading experts present methodologies for basinwide approaches to water quality restoration. In 15 chapters the identification of pollution sources, definition of standards and their attainability, surface and groundwater modeling, remediation of contaminated soils and sediments, development and implementation of low cost treatment technologies, basinwide water quality management and remediation, and economic and institutional issues are covered. The book focuses on the situation in central and eastern European countries; however, the topics and solutions are of general interest and have worldwide applications.

Book excerpt: The papers in this proceedings were presented at the World Environmental & Water Resources Congress 2009, which was held in Kansas City, Missouri from May 17 to 21. This annual conference is an important opportunity for professionals in the environmental and water resources fields to convene and focus on issues facing our world. The theme of this year s technical program is the Great Rivers of the World. This proceedings illuminates the engineering challenges of addressing the important environmental and development issues while focusing on the need for a sustainable future.
Download or read book EcoRegions of Alaska written by Alisa L. Gallant and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1998-05 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Produced as a framework for organizing and interpreting environmental data for inventory, monitoring, and research efforts. The descriptions of the 20 ecoregions of Alaska contained in this guide were derived by synthesizing information on the geographic distribution of environmental factors such as climate, terrain, soils, and vegetation. The specific procedures and materials used to delineate the ecoregion boundaries are documented, and the environmental characteristics in each ecoregion are described. Accompanied by a full-color oversize map of the ecoregions, their boundaries, and transitional areas. 42 full-color photos.
