Download or read book Small scale Processing And Storage Of Tropical Root Crops written by Donald Plucknett and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical root crops—basic staples for millions of people—are highly perishable, and tremendous losses occur after harvest because of the lack of storage and processing technology. This book is the first to fully describe small-scale processing and storage methods for these root crops, particularly taro, sweet potato, and yams. The authors emphasize methods of handling and preserving the crops that require little in the way of energy or technology, and they discuss traditional methods of storage and processing in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. They also describe small machines suitable for processing and highlight examples of higher-level technology. The book is a milestone in the search for ways to appropriately modernize traditional agriculture and food systems.

Download or read book Managing Pastures And Cattle Under Coconuts written by Donald L. Plucknett and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-04-10 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the long life of a coconut palm--sixty to eighty years--and the relatively wide spacing the plants require, every coconut grower faces the problem of how to manage the land beneath the palms. Many of the small-scale farmers who manage over 90 percent of the 6 million hectares of coconut palms in the world have learned that raising cattle or other livestock under the palms can be profitable, as well as an effective method of controlling weeds. This book reviews current knowledge on this productive farming system, drawing on research results and experiences of successful farmers. Well illustrated with photographs from producing areas, the book includes information on the management of both natural (unimproved) and improved pastures.

Download or read book The Role of Centrosema Desmodium and Stylosanthes in Improving Tropical Pastures written by Robert L Burt and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-06-02 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This integrated collection describes the importance of forage legumes for pasture development and improvement in the tropics and subtropics. Leading agronomists review the magnitude of the need for pasture improvement; tropical and subtropical soil and climate environments; reports of the successful use of legumes in pasture development in a wet and a dry tropical environment; and the scope of the problem in terms of area to be developed and development logistics required. Three legume genera, Centrosema, Desmodium, and Stylosanthes, are discussed in detail--information is presented on taxonomy, adaptation, distribution, productivity, and usefulness--and considerable emphasis is placed on Rhizobium germplasm resources for these genera. A concluding section of technical essays addresses special considerations in using tropical legumes in pasture development and presents a coordinated multidisciplinary approach to legume exploration and evaluation.
Download or read book Tropical Legumes written by National Research Council and published by The Minerva Group, Inc.. This book was released on 2002-06 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This National Academy of Sciences report describes plants of the family Leguminosae, all of them greatly underexploited. Some are extensively used in one part of the world but unknown elsewhere; others are virtually unknown to science but have particular attributes that suggest they could become major crops in the future; a few are already widespread but their possibilities are not yet fully realized. Most of the plants described in this book have the capacity to provide their own nitrogenous fertilizer through bacteria that live in nodules on their roots; the bacteria chemically convert nitrogen gas from the air into soluble compounds that the plant can absorb and utilize. As a result, legumes generally require no additional nitrogenous fertilizer for average growth. This is advantageous because commercial nitrogenous fertilizers are now extremely expensive for peasant farmers. This report demonstrates how farmers in developing countries, by using leguminous plants, can grow useful crops while avoiding that expense. However, the plants to be discussed here should be seen as complements to, not as substitutes for, conventional tropical crops.

This book addresses this problem by providing a step-by-step guide for preparing EAs. Bridging the regulatory gap, it draws on information scattered throughout NEPA regulations and guidance documents, as well as best professional practices (BPP) and case law. The book progresses from the fundamentals to successfully more advanced topics, making it suitable for beginners, students, and experienced practitioners alike. It provides an indispensable guide for managing, analyzing, and writing legally defensible EAs.
