Book excerpt: The City Council, on behalf of the residents of Wales, Alaska, requested assistance from the Indian Health Service (IHS) in June 1982 in constructing a new water storage tank, a distribution system, and wastewater disposal facilities as needed to serve 43 housing units in the community. IHS Project AN-83-300/649 provided the City of Wales with washeteria renovations, including a new watering point, infiltration gallery on Gilbert Creek with 3,000 feet of water transmission line, water storage tank refurbishing, water service line and sewage disposal facilities for the city office/clinic building, a new septic system for the washeteria, and operation and maintenance (O&M) equipment.

Book excerpt: The City Council, on behalf of the residents of Wales, requested assistance from the Indian Health Service (IHS), for a higher level of sanitation services in the community to serve 12 homes built under the federal HUD Indian Housing Program. The IHS constructed a honeybucket haul system with a lined honeybucket lagoon. IHS provided the installation of the honeybucket collection stations located thorughout the community, and provided the necessary equipment to haul the honeybucket containers to the newly constructed lined honeybucket disposal site. Also included in the overall wastewater scope was the clinic drainfield expansion and an alternate community washeteria drainfield. Additionally, the IHS replaced and relocated the U.S. Navy water system transmission line. The U.S. Navy provided funding for the water line relocation and retained the ownership and continued the water line operations.
