Download or read book Fish versus Power written by Matthew D. Evenden and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-05-03 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fish versus Power is an environmental history of the Fraser River (British Columbia) and the attempts to dam it for power and to defend it for salmon. Amid contemporary debates over large dam development and declines in fisheries, this book offers a case study of a river basin where development decisions did not ultimately dam the river, but rather conserved its salmon. Although the case is local, its implications are global as Evenden explores the transnational forces that shaped the river, the changing knowledge and practices of science, and the role of environmental change in shaping environmental debate. The Fraser is the world's most productive salmon river; it is also a large river with enormous waterpower potential. Very few rivers in the developed world have remained undammed. On the Fraser, however, fish - not dams - triumphed, and this book seeks to explain why.
Download or read book Environmental Effect written by Gilbert F. White and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-10 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our critical attempts to solve the pressing current problems of a limited water supply, it is essential that we act always with a global view to the future. Recognizing this, an international group of scholars—from the Soviet Union, Canada, Africa, and the United States—met to review together their experiences and research on the environmental effects of a number of large scale river management programs. This edited collection of their reports provides a balanced view of a vital element in the total ecosystem. Their analysis points out the urgent need to take account of long-term trends in climate, to consider all feasible management alternatives, and, especially, to manage demand (as opposed to simply increasing water supply) and to defer irreversible action until all environmental impacts are estimated.

Download or read book Openings written by Laura Cameron and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1997 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Opening" chapter reflects on the connection between historical and technological frontiers. "Listening for Pleasure" discusses oral histories as they relate to the negotiated and contested space of Sumas Lake. "Margins and Mosquitoes" recovers archival records from Victoria to Ottawa to explore flood-lake involvements federally, provincially, and locally. "Memory Device" moves into the archive of land and waterscapes, looking for connections between place and history, mindful of both Native oral tradition and written accounts of the lake. The concluding chapter, "One More Byte," written from the perspective of a mosquito, attempts to distance this project from the work of modernization while assessing the value of interactive history. The book considers the connection between an understanding of physical environments and an understanding of social environments. It explores the hydrologic cycle and highlights the significance of the relationship between natural environments and the activities of humankind, drawing together physical and human geography to produce a highly detailed study.
