Download or read book ESPE the First 50 Years written by Wolfgang G. Sippell and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'ESPE - The First 50 Years' tells the story of ESPE's development from a small club of friends into an international scientific society. The European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology looks back on its history, major steps in the development of this new subspecialty, and how the 30 founders and the generations of scientists who followed them achieved a democratically structured professional organisation. Success in obtaining vital long-term sponsorship from the industry enabled the development of various high-level educational programmes, fellowships, postgraduate schools, international research clusters and the establishment of prestigious scientific awards. In the second part of the book 21 senior ESPE members look back in personal recollections, and tell fascinating stories of their ESPE past. The third part provides a chronological overview with key data, including the most important scientific topics at ESPE's 50 annual meetings to date, eight of which were international Joint Meetings. These reference overviews of meetings illustrate in detail the impressive development of paediatric endocrinology in Europe and around the world.

Download or read book An Advanced Course in Modern Nuclear Physics written by J.M. Arias and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-01-11 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ?eld of nuclear physics is entering the 21st century in an interesting and exciting way. On the one hand, it is changing qualitatively since new experim- tal developments allow us to direct radioactive and other exotic probes to target nuclei as well as to sparko? extremely energetic nuclear collisions. In parallel, detector systems are of an impressive sophistication. It is di?cult to envisage all the discoveries that will be made in the near future. On the other hand, the app- cations of nuclear science and technology are broadening the limits in medicine, industry, art, archaeology, and the environmental sciences, etc. This implies that the public perception of our ?eld is changing, smoothly but drastically, in c- trast to former times where nuclear weapons and nuclear power plants were the dominant applications perceived by citizens. Both aspects, scienti?c dynamism and popular recognition, should lead the ?eld to an unexpected revival. One of the consequences of the former could be that many brilliant students consider nuclear physics as an excellent ?eld in which to acquire professional expertise. Therefore, one of the challenges of the international nuclear physics community is to try to make the ?eld attractive. That means simply being pedagogic and enthusiastic. Thus, as organisers of an already established summer school, our contribution was to put an emphasis in this session on pedagogy and enthusiasm.

Download or read book Organizations and Strategies in Astronomy written by Andre Heck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am most grateful to Andr ́ e Heck for his invitation to write a foreword to OSA Volume 4 – I will use this valued opportunity to emphasise those topics in Vol. 4 which I consider important even if other topics may be of even greater importance in the universal scale of things. At the outset let me say that I commend Vol. 4 to its readers – it contains much of very great interest for organisations and strategies in astronomy. A topic which I consider to be of very great importance at this time is Adverse Environmental Impact on Astronomy. There are two papers on this topic in OSA 4 – Cohen on Strategies for Protecting Radio Ast- nomy and Schwarz on Light Pollution Control. The growth in the extent of use, the power and spectral demand for radio transmission continues to increase virtually exponentially. The impact on the ‘listening’ services such as radio astronomy has been severe. Only by creativity in developing new techniques for radio noise (including legal transmissions) reduction and by participating fully in the allocation process for radio frequencies has radio astronomy developed to the powerful investigative tool it is today.
