Las matemáticas son un elemento vital en la vida del hombre, están relacionadas con su producción artística filosófica y en el transcurrir de los siglos pueden interpretarse como una manifestación pura y diáfana de ese ritmo que ha dominado a los pensamientos. Este debilitamiento de la fe en Dios es uno de los factores desencadenantes del nacimiento de la Filosofía de la religión. A la crisis de la fe en Dios se sumaron otros acontecimientos que precipitaron el surgir de la nueva disciplina. En primer lugar, el giro antropológico. Hegel constató un cierto «cansancio de lo divino». En segundo lugar, se asistió al descubrimiento de otras religiones. Supuso una auténtica crisis para el cristianismo. Por último, y casi como consecuencia de lo anterior, la Europa cristiana asistió a la quiebra del pensamiento dogmático. Estos acontecimientos, unidos a otros factores sociales, culturales y económicos, dieron lugar al nacimiento de la Filosofía de la religión, es decir, a una forma de argumentar crítica, rigurosa, abierta y libre de ataduras confesionales.

Esta visión, auspiciada por los partidarios de la Contrarrevolución, posteriormente se ha hecho canónica al asentarse los principios proclamados por los revolucionarios franceses. Con la perspectiva de esta visión sesgada, los escritos referentes a la religión se ven como añadidos discordantes, explicándose por causas subjetivas los que se presentan como disarmonías. Frente a esta interpretación, la que el autor propone atiende a aspectos culturales, antes que a aspectos subjetivos. Rousseau es fruto de un momento de transición. Frente al XVIII como el siglo de la razón, el pueblo es eminentemente religioso. La opción de Rousseau por el sentimiento religioso es una opción epistemológica pero a su vez es una opción social, una opción por el pueblo llano, frente a la razón auspiciada por la élite. Rousseau propone una revolución moral presidida por esquemas religiosos, aunque esta religión tiene que adaptarse a los nuevos tiempos: la metafísica debe ceder ante lo terrenal, o la moral primar frente a lo teológico. La religión civil, como religión patriótica, es expresión de su deísmo en el ámbito político.

Book excerpt: This volume contains twenty-five contributions adapted from papers presented at the International Conference on Poetic Language and Religion in Greece and Rome, held at the University of Santiago de Compostela on 31tst May – 1st June 2012. The book fulfils two principal aims: to highlight the impulse and continuity of a research field that combines Indo-European and Classical Studies, which has generally been recognised for several decades as a very fruitful collaboration, and to provide the academic community with the current results of one of the most important topics of Classical Studies. The first part of the book focuses on the Indo-European tradition, tracking its remnants, particularly in the Classical languages. The Indo-European poetic tradition can be traced through linguistic reconstruction (formulae, onomastics) and some scattered mentions in literary texts. In the second part, the focus is placed on the poetic language in Greece and Rome. The rich and complex tradition of Classical literatures makes a clear-cut description of the inherited or innovative aspects of the religious and literary development more problematical. Ritual or cultic poetry, onomastics, phraseology, paeans and hymns, oracles as divine language, and magic all receive deep and thorough treatment from a reliable ensemble of scholars.
