Book excerpt: In this volume, I present to the reader exciting articles that cut across different areas of the disciplines of African philosophy and studies. The first article by the famous Paulin Hountondji of the National University of Benin Republic took long coming. In over four decades, he pursued his goal of critiquing the practice and direction of African philosophy which climaxed in his famous 1983 book titled [African Philosophy: Myth and Reality], revised in 1996. Critics have descended on his conclusion that what is called African philosophy might just be a myth over the years. In his article in this issue, he responds in style. His opening statement says it all: "Let me straight from the beginning confess one thing: I am not happy with the phrase "African Philosophy" used to describe a subject-matter, a specific discipline in the university curriculum. Why? Because it seems to particularize a kind of intellectual production taking place in Africa and to deny its universal validity." Other contributors in this volume addressed topical and exciting issues in the discipline. The collection is worth reading.

This special issue is dedicated to the theme of postmodernism where African philosophy is presented as a postmodern resistance to the hegemony of Western philosophy.

This book was released on 2016-01-08 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Editorial Without philosophy, the world would be filled with brutes! But the essence of philosophy practice does not lie in agreements rather; it lies chiefly in disagreements. Where people usually agree, there reason has gone on holiday and the spirit of philosophy vanquished. But our disagreements must be respectful to distinguish it from the banter of brutes or charlatans. This is what Filosofia Theoretica stands for hence, conversational thinking. I therefore, present Volume 4 Number 2 of Filosofia Theoretica, a journal dedicated to the promotion of conversational orientation in African philosophy. Conversational philosophizing breaks away from the perverse orientation introduced by the Universalist school in African philosophy. Papers published in the journal have phenomenological basis and thrive on productive conversations among actors. We believe that conversational philosophy represents one of the modes through which the episteme of African philosophy could grow by opening new vistas and unveiling new concepts.

Book An African Philosophy of Personhood Morality and Politics

Download or read book An African Philosophy of Personhood Morality and Politics written by Motsamai Molefe and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the salient ethical idea of personhood in African philosophy. It is a philosophical exposition that pursues the ethical and political consequences of the normative idea of personhood as a robust or even foundational ethical category. Personhood refers to the moral achievements of the moral agent usually captured in terms of a virtuous character, which have consequences for both morality and politics. The aim is not to argue for the plausibility of the ethical and political consequences of the idea of personhood. Rather, the book showcases some of the moral-political content and consequences of the account it presents.

Book Ethnophilosophy and the Search for the Wellspring of African Philosophy

Download or read book Ethnophilosophy and the Search for the Wellspring of African Philosophy written by Ada Agada and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-12 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a case for the de-stigmatisation of ethnophilosophy by demonstrating its continuing relevance in contemporary African philosophy. The book brings together established and brilliant young scholars who defend ethnophilosophy as a unique source of African philosophy with the capacity to colour African philosophical scholarship, thereby distinguishing African philosophy from other philosophical traditions of the world and setting the stage for philosophical dialogue in the 21st century characterised by multiculturalism and globalisation. The volume addresses the future of African philosophy by closely linking the past of this tradition with the exciting projects of the contemporary system builders whose works emerge from the ethnophilosophical while transcending it. The book is aimed at African philosophy experts, scholars of intercultural philosophy, African studies scholars and graduate students of African and intercultural philosophy.

Download or read book African Democracy written by Jonathan O. Chimakonam and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-09-21 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are numerous different democratic systems in Africa, from the Igbo institutions that date back to the 15th century to Western-style democracy introduced by colonial powers. But what does democracy really mean for African nations? And what effect does it have on the lives of their people? This is the first comprehensive examination of the social and political consequences of democracy in Africa. Written from an African philosophical perspective, leading and emerging scholars explore the impact of democracy in a continent dealing not only with the perennial issues of leadership failure, poverty and corruption but also with contemporary global concerns such as immigration, digital media and COVID-19. With a focus first and foremost on the African people, this pioneering volume investigates how the challenges of democracy as a system affect their lived experience. Looking in particular at the sub-Sahara, it reveals the influence that the failures of democracy have on fundamental needs, including allocation of primary resources, autonomy, welfare, free speech and women's rights. African Democracy: Impediments, Promises, and Prospects gives an unflinching insight into the struggles caused by democratic governance in Africa, whilst also, crucially, pointing to its accomplishments and the future possibilities for African nations.

Book African Metaphysics Epistemology and a New Logic

Download or read book African Metaphysics Epistemology and a New Logic written by Jonathan O. Chimakonam and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-06 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on African metaphysics and epistemology, and is an exercise in decoloniality. The authors describe their approach to "decoloniality" as an intellectual repudiation of coloniality, using the method of conversational thinking grounded in Ezumezu logic. Focusing specifically on both African metaphysics and African epistemology, the authors put forward theories formulated to stimulate fresh debates and extend the frontiers of learning in the field. They emphasize that this book is not a project in comparative philosophy, nor is it geared towards making Africa/ns the object/subjects of philosophy. Rather, the book highlights and discusses philosophical insights that have been produced from the African perspective, which the authors argue must be further developed in order to achieve decoloniality in the field of philosophy more broadly.
