Book Transcendence in Philosophy and Religion

Download or read book Transcendence in Philosophy and Religion written by James E. Faulconer and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2003-04-16 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can transcendence be both philosophical and religious? Do philosophers and theologians conceive of the same thing when they think and talk about transcendence? Philosophy and religion have understood transcendence and other matters of faith differently, but both the language and concepts of religion, including transcendence, reside at the core of postmodern philosophy. Transcendence in Philosophy and Religion considers whether it is possible to analyze religious transcendence in a philosophical manner, and if so, whether there is a way for phenomenology to think transcendence directly. Attention is devoted to the role of French philosophy, particularly the work of Levinas, Ricoeur, Derrida, and Marion, in defining recent debates in the philosophy of religion and posing new ways of thinking about religious experience in a postmodern world.

Book Phenomenological Approaches to Religion and Spirituality

Download or read book Phenomenological Approaches to Religion and Spirituality written by Essien, Essien D. and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-01-29 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an interesting knowledge trajectory that God remains incomprehensible, not imperceptible. This lends credence to the fact that religious study since the Enlightenment has dedicated itself almost entirely to the problem of reconciling the non-existence of God in the physical world with his necessary existence in the metaphysical world. When seriously examined, it would be discovered that these two aspects are logically contradictory, and this is a problem with no solution. But interpreting God not as a physical being but as a phenomenological thing changes the nature of the problem enough that a solution emerges almost automatically. In this phenomenological model, the crux of the matter is that God does not exist, but God is real. Therefore, it is imperative to return to experience and verifiability, hence, purging it of unexamined and often hidden assumptions. Phenomenological Approaches to Religion and Spirituality brings together the different disciplines and research approaches to provide a comprehensive analysis of the phenomenology of God and spirituality, as well as offering an effective epistemological apparatus capable of dealing with this concept. The book employs multidisciplinary approaches from religious studies, theology, philosophy, anthropology, and other segments to dissect the subject matter for efficient evaluation and all-inclusive findings. While covering various aspects of religion such as the testaments of the Bible, the church, the religious experience, and various aspects of spirituality, this book is intended for theologians, philosophers, religious leaders, policymakers, academicians, researchers, students, public institutions, and agencies with a special interest in religious matters, values, knowledge, and truth.

Scholars are exploring the claims of theology, the religious roots of culture, and the relation between beliefs and the various areas or disciplines in life. Students have not until now had a series of books which could serve as reliable resources for class or private study, in a time when inquiry into religion is undertaken with new freedom and a sense of urgency. With Harper Forum Books a new generation can confront religion through exposure to significant minds in theology and related humanistic fields." - Martin E. Marty, General Editor

Book The Divine in Husserl and Other Explorations

Download or read book The Divine in Husserl and Other Explorations written by Angela Ales Bello and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-07 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first part of The Divine in Husserl and Other Explorations a description is provided of Husserl’s method in order to explain how he deals with the question of God from a philosophical perspective. The results from this investigation are compared with the main contributions of the philosophers of the past. The second part focuses on the theme of religion as developed by Husserl in order to grasp the meaning of religious lived-experiences. Through an archeological excavation Husserl teaches us how to go to the bottom of the sacred and the divine in order to pinpoint their features and to comprehend their religious configurations in history. In the third part one can find the application of husserlian hyletics and noetics to the field of the archaic sacred and of the different religious experiences. Some particular themes are treated such as ecstasy, contemplation, incarnation, and the relationship between the human being and the God from a philosophical and a religious point of view.

Book Continental Philosophy and Philosophy of Religion

Download or read book Continental Philosophy and Philosophy of Religion written by Morny Joy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-05 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book that provides access to twelve Continental philosophers and the consequences of their thinking for the philosophy of religion. Basically, in the second half of the twentieth century, it has been treated from within the Anglo- American school of philosophy, which deals mainly with proofs and truths, and questions of faith. This approach is more concerned with human experience, and pays more attention to historical context and cultural influences. As such, it provides challenging questions about the way forward for philosophy of religion in the twenty-first century.
