Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This captivating ethnography reveals the immediate and persisting impact of forced family separations and the eventual reunifications in communities affected by El Salvador's civil war. In 2005, medical student Elizabeth Barnert traveled to El Salvador to build a DNA bank for reuniting families forcibly separated during the Salvadoran civil war. Based on fifteen years of interviews and field notes, Reunion chronicles families' experiences with military attacks, child disappearances, and family separations, the joy of reunion and the arduous process of reintegration. Barnert works alongside Jesuit priest and Pro-Búsqueda founder Father Jon Cortina, former rebel fighters, and reformed gang members. She meets an eight-year-old journeying north to reunite with her mother and a young woman returning to El Salvador twenty years after her adoption abroad. Reunion includes a foreword by renowned anthropologist Philippe Bourgois, along with his firsthand account of fleeing a Salvadoran military raid, and never-before-published photos and children's drawings from the war. Told through the voices of activists and survivors, this groundbreaking ethnography illuminates the cycles of poverty and violence driving immigration and ongoing separations around the world.

Book excerpt: It is dedicated to an individual who had a very positive impact on my professional life. The book begins with describing a childhood that began during WWII in extreme poverty and then at the age of 12 immigrating to the US. Became a US citizen and joined the US Navy at 18 and became a Navy Hospital Corpsman (medic). After going to medical X- ray school and working at two US Navy hospitals was transferred to the US Naval Air Facility on the island of Sicily in Italy. Following two tours at Sigonella took a discharge and accepted a civilian position. Shortly after accepting the civilian position a US Navy CDR by the name of Toby Haynsworth took over the Supply Department. Toby had a discussion with me and expressed his concern about my temporary employment status and arranged for me to receive some specialized transportation training and for me to apply for permanent civil service status which I acquired giving me job security. Toby was also a good friend with an American writer who was living in Taormina, Sicily, Eugene Mc Donald Bonner. Mr. Bonner was a North Carolina born-author, composer, music critic, and wayfarer. He also wrote a very interesting book “Roundabout Sicily” describing in detail the history and beauty of this historic island. In addition to publishing a number of songs and chamber works, Mr. Bonner also collaborated with Anatole France to create and opera based upon the Frenchman’s comedy “The Man Who Married a Mute” (“Celui Qui Epousa Un Femme Muette”). It was a pleasure meeting and spending time with such an interesting and talented individual.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author would like to invite the reader to take a journey with her back in time. I am writing this novel about my family who lived in the late 1800s. My parents, Michael and his wife Filomena DellOrfano, were born 1878 and 1882, respectively. Chusiano di San Domenico d Avellino is a small town in the Province of Avellino in the Region of Campania in Naples, Italy. Raffael and Camella DellOrfano lived there with their sons, Massimeno and Michele. The DellOrfano family and others in that area were identified as Bianco or whiteheads due to their fair skin, blond and red haired. During the day, the boys went to school and afterward worked in the fields, and learned the value of hard work at a young age. Later, Michele became interested in a young lady by the name of Filomena, though his father disapproved. After a longtime disagreement between father and son, Michele, decided to marry his long time girl friend, Filomena, and left the homestead where he was born and raised. Later, Michele made his way to America, to build a new life for his family. Creating a new identity is never easy. They struggled, but their love keeps them strong as they remember the old country and looked forward to their new land.
Download or read book Love And Carnage written by Dick Clifton and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-03-06 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very little if anything seems to have been written about the men who searched for and found prisoners of war that had been released when the armistice was signed (occasionally it would be a grounded pilot) and escorted them through the forward area in to Allied occupied territory. Without the cooperation of il Partito d'Azione and the willing assistance of the ribelli (rebels as the partisans were known), who often provided guides, they would not have been able to operate. The story which is based on the authors personal experience takes place in Abruzzo. It is written as a sister book to The Missing Years, and gives an insight to the risks ordinary people were prepared to take in the midst of almost daily atrocities.
