Book excerpt: The Hg-based superconductors are materials with the highest critical temperatures from all known superconductors. Their application as the devices for the everyday use is, however, limited due to the difficulties in their fabrication. The optimization of the preparation methods will open large possibilities for the cryoelectronic applications. Within the frame of my dissertation thesis we tried to optimize the parameters of the synthesis of the thin Hg-based films. The development of the non-contact method for the mercuration of the thin films confirmed the film formation via Hg vapour phase which will enable the development of the devices for the mercuration of the larger samples (few cm). The lift-off method used for the patterning of the precursor films prevents the water contamination of the films and thus their degradation. The non-contact mercuration also enabled the fabrication of the Hg-based superconducting structures with the minimal risk of the short-circuits between the single parts of the structure. The formation of the Hg-1223 decreased the amount of the impurities on the top of the films which will enable the fabrication of the sandwich planar Josephson junctions, too. The prepared coplanar structures are suitable for the use in the ultra-fast detectors. The structures containing microbridges can serve for the study of the superconductivity in the micro- and submicro- scale and for the fabrication of the Josephson junctions of such dimensions. The model structure of the superconducting fault-current limiter was the first step for the fabrication of the real limiter structure and will be used for the study of the superconducting properties on this type of the structure. The use of the sapphire substrate allows the application of the Hg-based superconducting structures also for the microwave devices. All the structures had high values of the critical temperatures (up to 110 K for the coplanar strips and microbridges, up to 120 K for the limiter model structures) which provide the stability of the superconducting properties and parameters (coherent length, energy gap, etc.) at the working temperature of the superconductor (77 K).

Book excerpt: The aim of this work is the study of crystallographic texture and microstructure in connection with the superconducting properties (Tc and Jc) of High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) materials: YBCO and NBCO. Microstructure is studied by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Electron backscatter Diffraction (EBSD). The Determination of critical temperature (Tc) and critical current density (Jc) are made with Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) magnetometer or Physical Properties Measurement System (PPMS). The first part of this work investigates the crystallographic textures of the YBCO film by using EBSD in order to deduce the epitaxial relationship between the superconducting layer and the buffer layer. This thin film is made up of three successive deposits (among which 300 nm of YBCO), used in fault current limiters for electrical engineering applications. The second part presents the study of NdBa2Cu3O7-d (NBCO) and YBCO bulks prepared by various techniques. The effect of silver doping of YBCO has been studied on samples prepared by the Melt Textured Growth (MTG) technique under low oxygen partial pressure. The doping up to a given amount of silver enhances the microstructure and the critical current density. A comparison of the physical and structural characteristics between NBCO oxygenated exsitu and YBCO oxygenated in-situ, prepared by MTG under high magnetic field has been made. Zone-melted NBCO samples textured by zone melting method oxygenated respectively in-situ and ex-situ have been studied. Par des mesures de transport, nous avons exploré une vaste gamme de courants. Nous nous sommes en particulier concentrés sur la limite des hautes densités de courant, qui est beaucoup moins étudié. Dans ce régime extrême, à certaines températures et densités de courant, apparaissent des sauts de tension abrupts. Le courant qui génère ces événements a une dépendance en température identique dans différents supraconducteurs à haut T[c souscrit], ce qui démontre le caractère intrinsèque de ce phénomène. Nous attribuons ces sauts de tension à la formation de phase-slip centers, qui sont des régions au-dessous de T[c souscrit], où la dissipation est très similaire à celle de l'état normal. La taille de ces domaines est liée au temps de vie des quasiparticules, que nous avons pu déterminer, et qui se révèle être anormalement long.
