The invasion of Germany by American films, which began in 1921 with overlapping waves of sensationalist serials, slapstick shorts, society pictures, and historical epics, initiated a decade of cultural collision and accommodation. On the one hand it fueled an impassioned debate about the properties of cinema and the specter of wholesale Americanization. On the other hand it spawned unprecedented levels of cooperation and exchange. In Berlin, American motion pictures not only entertained all social classes and film tastes but also served as a vehicle for American values and a source of sharp economic competition. Hollywood in Berlin correlates the changing forms of Hollywood's contributions to Weimar culture and the discourses that framed and interpreted them, restoring historical contours to a leading aspect of cultural interchange in this century. At the same time, the book successfully embeds Weimar cinema in its contemporary international setting.

In the first major study in English of East German film, Joshua Feinstein argues that the answer to this question is decidedly complex. Drawing on newly opened archives as well as interviews with East German directors, actors, and state officials, Feinstein traces how the cinematic depiction of East Germany changed in response to national political developments and transnational cultural trends such as the spread of television and rock 'n' roll. Celluloid images fed a larger sense of East German identity, an identity that persists today, more than a decade after German reunification. But even as they attempted to satisfy calls for "authentic" images of the German Democratic Republic that would legitimize socialist rule, filmmakers challenged the regime's self-understanding. Beginning in the late 1960s, East German films dwelled increasingly on everyday life itself, no longer seeing it merely as a stage in the development toward communism. By presenting an image of a static rather than an evolving society, filmmakers helped transform East German identity from one based on a commitment to socialist progress to one that accepted the GDR as it was.

The Cinema's Third Machine reproduces the diversity of perspectives and the intensity of controversies of early German film within the broad context of German social and political history, from the aesthetic rapture of the first years to the institutionalization of film by the national socialist state. Many texts have been rediscovered and are now presented to modern scholars for the first time. Hake treats all aspects of the medium: production, promotion, education, journalism, aesthetics, and political activism, following throughout the various forms criticism assumed.

Zentral ist dabei die Auseinandersetzung des Malers mit der klassizistischen Kunsttheorie von Franciscus Junius. Dessen Werk "De pictura veterum" war 1637 in lateinischer und 1641 in niederländischer Sprache erschienen. So lautet die These, dass Rembrandts Gruppenporträt auf eine Kritik italienisch-klassizistischer Imitatio-Konzepte zielt und zugleich Werke der Antike und der italienischen Hochrenaissance ironisiert. Der Leidener Maler orientiert sich an Raffaels Schule von Athen, um damit implizit die Frage angemessener und unangemessener Nachahmung zu stellen. Die Studie insgesamt will zeigen, wie differenziert Rembrandt mit Vorbildern umzugehen vermag. Steht auch die Nachtwache im Zentrum der Untersuchung, so werden auch andere Gemälde sowie Radierungen und Zeichnungen interpretiert und nach der ironischen Dimension von Rembrandts Kunst im Ganzen gefragt. The focus of Müller’s study is a new interpretation of Rembrandt’s Night Watch from 1642, which highlights the painter’s engagement with the classical art theory of Franciscus Junius. Junius’s treatise, "De pictura veterum", was published in Latin in 1637 and in Dutch in 1641. Ultimately, Müller argues that Rembrandt’s group portrait was designed to present a critique of the Italianate/classical concepts of Imitatio in addition to offering an ironic commentary on artworks of the Antique and High Renaissance periods. The Dutch artist takes Raphael’s School of Athens as a reference point, thereby implicitly posing questions about appropriate and inappropriate forms of imitation. The study as a whole shows how complex and witty Rembrandt’s approach to his models could be. Although the Night Watch occupies a central place in the inquiry, the author also engages with other paintings, etchings and drawings in order to sketch the contours of Rembrandt’s ironic image making.

"Never before and in no other country," observes director Wim Wenders, "have images and language been abused so unscrupulously as here, never before and nowhere else have they been debased so deeply as vehicles to transmit lies." More than a thousand German feature films that premiered during the reign of National Socialism survive as mementoes of what many regard as film history's darkest hour. As Eric Rentschler argues, however, cinema in the Third Reich emanated from a Ministry of Illusion and not from a Ministry of Fear. Party vehicles such as Hitler Youth Quex and anti-Semitic hate films such as Jew Süss may warrant the epithet "Nazi propaganda," but they amount to a mere fraction of the productions from this era. The vast majority of the epoch's films seemed to be "unpolitical"--melodramas, biopix, and frothy entertainments set in cozy urbane surroundings, places where one rarely sees a swastika or hears a "Sieg Heil." Minister of propaganda Joseph Goebbels, Rentschler shows, endeavored to maximize film's seductive potential, to cloak party priorities in alluring cinematic shapes. Hitler and Goebbels were master showmen enamored of their media images, the Third Reich was a grand production, the Second World War a continuing movie of the week. The Nazis were movie mad, and the Third Reich was movie made. Rentschler's analysis of the sophisticated media culture of this period demonstrates in an unprecedented way the potent and destructive powers of fascination and fantasy. Nazi feature films--both as entities that unreeled in moviehouses during the regime and as productions that continue to enjoy wide attention today--show that entertainment is often much more than innocent pleasure.
