Book excerpt: John McCarty began his writing career as a film reviewer and interviewer for such cinema-oriented periodicals and “fanzines” as Cinefantastique, Take One, Film Heritage, Filmaker’s Newsletter, Today’s Filmmaker, Fangoria, Starlog, Filmfax and many others before he turned to writing books about his favorite subject since grade school – the movies. In Cinemusings, he has drawn from this output of more than 50 years to take us on a personal journey with him of the films and filmmakers he has come to cherish over a lifetime of obsessive movie-watching. They include favorite essays, reviews, profiles and interviews selected from these magazines (many of which are no longer in existence) and from several of his long out of print books (Splatter Movies, The Modern Horror Film, and Thrillers). They cover subjects here and abroad that span the history of cinema itself – from directors Alfred Hitchcock to Paul Morrissey, Fritz Lang to Frank LaLoggia, Charles Laughton to David Cronenberg, Sam Peckinpah to George A. Romero; and films ranging from The 39 Steps, Double Indemnity, and Heavenly Creatures to Orders to Kill, The Fly, The Wild Bunch, and much, much more.

Book Words on Screen

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michel Chion
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2017-03-07
  • ISBN : 023154345X
  • Pages : 301 pages

Download or read book Words on Screen written by Michel Chion and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michel Chion is well known in contemporary film studies for his innovative investigations into aspects of cinema that scholars have traditionally overlooked. Following his work on sound in film in Audio-Vision and Film, a Sound Art, Words on Screen is Chion's survey of everything the seventh art gives us to read on screen. He analyzes titles, credits, and intertitles, but also less obvious forms of writing that appear on screen, from the tear-stained letter in a character's hand to reversed writing seen in mirrors. Through this examination, Chion delves into the multitude of roles that words on screen play: how they can generate narrative, be torn up or consumed but still remain in the viewer's consciousness, take on symbolic dimensions, and bear every possible relation to cinematic space. With his characteristic originality, Chion performs a poetic inventory of the possibilities of written text in the film image. Taking examples from hundreds of films spanning years and genres, from the silents to the present, he probes the ways that words on screen are used and their implications for film analysis and theory. In the process, he opens up and unearths the specific poetry of visual text in film. Exhaustively researched and illustrated with hundreds of examples, Words on Screen is a stunning demonstration of a creative scholar's ability to achieve a radically new understanding of cinema.

Fifty years later, Philomena decided to find him. Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic, Philomena’s son was trying to find her. Renamed Michael Hess, he had become a leading lawyer in the first Bush administration, and he struggled to hide secrets that would jeopardize his career in the Republican Party and endanger his quest to find his mother. Book American Jewish Filmmakers

Download or read book American Jewish Filmmakers written by David Desser and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2023-04-17 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Woody Allen, Mel Brooks, Sidney Lumet, and Paul Mazursky, all sons of East European Jews, remain among the most prominent contemporary American film directors. In this revised, updated second edition of American Jewish Filmmakers, David Desser and Lester D. Friedman demonstrate how the Jewish experience gives rise to an intimately linked series of issues in the films of these and other significant Jewish directors. The effects of the Holocaust linger, both in gripping dramatic form (Mazursky's Enemies, a Love Story) and in black comedy (Brooks's The Producers). In his trilogy consisting of Serpico, Prince of the City, and Q&A, Lumet focuses on the failure of society's institutions to deliver social justice. Woody Allen portrays urban life and family relationships (Manhattan and Hannah and Her Sisters), sometimes with a nostalgic twist (Radio Days). This edition concludes with a newly written discussion of the careers of other prominent Jewish filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg, Barry Levinson, Brian Singer, and Darren Aronofsky.
