Book Film Analysis in English

Download or read book Film Analysis in English written by Hurtrez Lionel and published by Editions OPHRYS. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Multimodal Film Analysis

Download or read book Multimodal Film Analysis written by John Bateman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a new basis for the empirical analysis of film. Starting from an established body of work in film theory, the authors show how a close incorporation of the current state of the art in multimodal theory—including accounts of the syntagmatic and paradigmatic axes of organisation, discourse semantics and advanced ‘layout structure’—builds a methodology by which concrete details of film sequences drive mechanisms for constructing filmic discourse structures. The book introduces the necessary background, the open questions raised, and the method by which analysis can proceed step-by-step. Extensive examples are given from a broad range of films. With this new analytic tool set, the reader will approach the study of film organisation with new levels of detail and probe more deeply into the fundamental question of the discipline: just how is it that films reliably communicate meaning?

Book Teaching Analysis of Film Language

Download or read book Teaching Analysis of Film Language written by David Wharton and published by . This book was released on 2005-09-30 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining the creative perspectives of filmmakers with more analytic academic methods, this study invites film students to take an active approach in learning to understand how audiovisual language is used to create meaning in films. While the main focus is on the concept of film language, case study readings of The Warrior (2002) and Traffic (2001) place these films in their institutional contexts to demonstrate the multifaceted nature of how meaning is created. This study gives particular emphasis to understanding cinemaphotography, editing, music, and setting. Students are encouraged to reflect on their own responses and develop reading skills through a range of online classroom activities that demonstrate how audience interaction works to create meaning in film. Technical terms and techniques are explained in an extensive glossary and in special explanatory sections illustrated by a range of films.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a common focus on the decisions made by filmmakers, the essays in this collection explore different aspects of the relationship between textual detail and broader conceptual frameworks. These texts reflect not only those areas of film history which have traditionally been explored through mise-en-scène criticism, but also areas such as the avant-garde and television drama which have not tended to receive such detailed investigation. In these ways, the book conducts a series of dialogues with issues in film study which are specifically provoked by close analysis.

Book Making Meaning

    Book Details:
  • Author : David BORDWELL
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2009-06-30
  • ISBN : 0674028538
  • Pages : 353 pages

Download or read book Making Meaning written by David BORDWELL and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Bordwell's new book is at once a history of film criticism, an analysis of how critics interpret film, and a proposal for an alternative program for film studies. It is an anatomy of film criticism meant to reset the agenda for film scholarship. As such Making Meaning should be a landmark book, a focus for debate from which future film study will evolve. Bordwell systematically maps different strategies for interpreting films and making meaning, illustrating his points with a vast array of examples from Western film criticism. Following an introductory chapter that sets out the terms and scope of the argument, Bordwell goes on to show how critical institutions constrain and contain the very practices they promote, and how the interpretation of texts has become a central preoccupation of the humanities. He gives lucid accounts of the development of film criticism in France, Britain, and the United States since World War II; analyzes this development through two important types of criticism, thematic-explicatory and symptomatic; and shows that both types, usually seen as antithetical, in fact have much in common. These diverse and even warring schools of criticism share conventional, rhetorical, and problem-solving techniques--a point that has broad-ranging implications for the way critics practice their art. The book concludes with a survey of the alternatives to criticism based on interpretation and, finally, with the proposal that a historical poetics of cinema offers the most fruitful framework for film analysis.

This book was released on 1981-02 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central thesis of this book is that a genre approach provides the most effective means for understanding, analyzing and appreciating the Hollywood cinema. Taking into account not only the formal and aesthetic aspects of feature filmmaking, but various other cultural aspects as well, the genre approach treats movie production as a dynamic process of exchange between the film industry and its audience. This process, embodied by the Hollywood studio system, has been sustained primarily through genres, those popular narrative formulas like the Western, musical and gangster film, which have dominated the screen arts throughout this century.

Book A Grammar of the Film An Analysis of Film Technique

Download or read book A Grammar of the Film An Analysis of Film Technique written by Raymond Spottiswoode and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reader will not need more than a glance at this book to discover that it arose out of the ashes of long-forgotten controversies, and was written at a tender age when the splitting of hairs seemed to its author more important than making new discoveries. We may imagine him, as he sat in his panelled Oxford study, the work for his degree pushed to one side, floor and table laden with early writings on the film-the work of such practical masters as Pudovkin, Eisenstein and Grierson, and the scourings of critics and others whose names have not survived the years. What had they to say, these early analysts? Had they established the theory of the film as a veritable art? Had they sufficiently distinguished it from the art forms out of which it grew? Above all, had they fully appreciated the grounds of this distinction? The young author did not think so. With all the heady enthusiasm of his twenty years, and unembarrassed by any actual contact with film, he felt that he had the answer.
