Book Filling and Emptying System New Ship Lock Mississippi River Gulf Outlet Louisiana Hydraulic Model Investigation

Download or read book Filling and Emptying System New Ship Lock Mississippi River Gulf Outlet Louisiana Hydraulic Model Investigation written by Jackson H Ables (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposed New Ship Lock for the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet, Louisiana, will be 150 ft wide by 1290 ft long (pintle to pintle) and will have lifts varying from 1.0 to 18.4 ft as well as reverse heads up to 3.0 ft. Two sets of miter gates are planned to care for reverse heads. Since the proposed lock is some 40 ft wider than any locks previously designed in the United States and will be used by both ship and barge traffic and will be subjected to reverse head conditions, a hydraulic model investigation of the filling and emptying system was required. Results of tests of the hydraulic system for the proposed lock in a 1:25-scale model are presented in this report. The original intake and outlet designs which must perform as both intakes and outlets were investigated and found to be satisfactory. Tests of 20 sidewall port manifold arrangements resulted in the recommendation of the type 15 sidewall port manifold arrangement. The type 15 (recommended) design sidewall port system as developed is considered optimum for barge tows and will be satisfactory for ships with the proper clearance provided between the bottom of the ships and floor of the lock chamber. For the culvert size and sidewall port system selected, the optimum elements were developed from model tests.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Navigation improvements including lock extensions are being investigated for several existing projects on the Upper Mississippi River (UMR). A hydraulic model study was conducted to evaluate filling and emptying system design alternatives for the extension of lock No. 22 and lock No. 25. A 1:25 scale model was constructed to determine the range of lock performance for both locks. The filling system flow capacity was not significantly changed from the original non-extended lock design. The filling time for acceptable chamber performance with the 4.57-m (15-ft) lift was 23.1 min. This filling time was achieved with a 23-min valve. The focus of the study was to determine emptying performance for multiple options of emptying gates built in the extended portion of the lock chamber river wall. Several emptying system designs were studied. The type 2 and 3 design provided the best chamber performance during the emptying operation.

Book Filling and Emptying System Port Allen Navigation Lock Gulf Intracoastal Waterway Louisiana Hydraulic Model Investigation

Download or read book Filling and Emptying System Port Allen Navigation Lock Gulf Intracoastal Waterway Louisiana Hydraulic Model Investigation written by J. H Ables (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Model tests to develop satisfactory filling and emptying systems for the navigation lock at Port Allen, Louisiana, which will connect the Mississippi River and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, are described in this report. Side-wall ports of the system were isolated and studied on a preliminary section model, and the entire hydraulic system was tested on a composite model simulating all essential features of the prototype lock structure. Both models were constructed to scales of 1:25. Revised designs that provided satisfactory performance were developed for the intake and discharge manifolds. Studies of the lock-chamber wall ports resulted in adoption of a 2-ft-deep recess in front of each of the 46 ports to improve flow conditions during lock-filling operations. Deflectors were used in the 22 upstream recesses to reduce hawser stresses during filling operations.
