Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Rethinking Postwar Europe

    Book Details:
  • Author : Barbara Lange
  • Publisher : Böhlau Köln
  • Release : 2019-12-09

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book "Rethinking Postwar Europe" offers an in-depth insight into the largely unexplored topic of artistic practices in the 1940s and 1950s in Europe which until recently had been obscured by ideologies of the Cold War. Thanks to the authors' diverse methodological backgrounds, the volume presents – for the first time – a comprehensive multilayered narrative, focusing on the complexities and entanglements in the artistic field. Instead of assessing the postwar period in the traditional way as divided by the Iron Curtain, the contributions investigate processes of contact, interaction, dissemination, overlapping, and networking. Consequently, the analysis of a diversified European modernism in both its aesthetic and its socio-political dimension resonates with all the different case studies. In particular, the volume looks at how artists developed, designed and (re)negotiated identities and discourses, and sheds new light on the power of art – and creative powers in general – in a postwar setting of mutilations, losses, and devastations.

Book excerpt: In spaces designed for fusions of dance, performance, film, karaoke, and reading, visitors to the Luxembourg Pavilion of the 56th Venice Biennale enter into the collaged headspace of artist Filip Markiewicz—Paradiso Lussemburgo. An artist whose subject is often the various projected and historical realities of Luxembourg itself, Markiewicz is well prepared to present viewers with a space to sieve through layers of projected labels (such as tax haven) and waves of immigration to speak to a blended sense of European nationality that also deftly uses the specific stage of Venice. This reader continues, in the words of the artist, this “new contemporary mythology of Luxembourg,” with a bilingual layering of drawings, text and analysis, exhibition views, an interview, and a film script. Paradiso Lussemburgo, a project proposed by Markiewicz and curator Paul Ardenne, creates an active theater, which the reader continues and further opens for participation. Copublished with MUDAM Luxemburg Contributors Paul Ardenne, Josée Hansen, Ingo Niermann

Book excerpt: This highly original book is the first in-depth study of a footsoldier of the seventeenth-century German Republic of Letters. Its subject, the polymath and schoolteacher Christian Daum, is today completely forgotten, yet left behind one of the largest private archives of any early modern European scholar. On the basis of this unique source, this book portrays schools as focal points of a whole world of Lutheran learning outside of universities and courts, as places not just of education but of intense scholarship, and examines their significance for German culture. Multi-confessional Germany was different from Catholic France and Protestant England in that its network of small cities fostered educational and cultural competition and made possible a much larger and socially open Republic. This book allows us for the first time to understand how the Republic of Letters was constructed from below and how it was possible for individuals from relatively humble backgrounds and occupations to be at the centre of European intellectual life. This book is aimed at other specialists as well as postgraduate students in the fields of cultural and social history, and can also serve as an introduction to recent European literature on early modern scholarship for undergraduate students.

Book Confessional Diplomacy in Early Modern Europe

Download or read book Confessional Diplomacy in Early Modern Europe written by Roberta Anderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confessional Diplomacy in Early Modern Europe examines the role of religion in early modern European diplomacy. In the period following the Reformations, Europe became divided: all over the continent, princes and their peoples split over theological, liturgical, and spiritual matters. At the same time, diplomacy rose as a means of communication and policy, and all powers established long- or short-term embassies and sent envoys to other courts and capitals. The book addresses three critical areas where questions of religion or confession played a role: papal diplomacy, priests and other clerics as diplomatic agents, and religion as a question for diplomatic debate, especially concerning embassy chapels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marked by her cosmopolitan origins, between Europe and Asia, and by an attention to the sonorous dimension of the world, the practice of Su-Mei Tse involves issues such as time, memory, musicality, and language. Presented in 2017–19 at Mudam Luxembourg, Aargauer Kunsthaus, Yuz Museum in Shanghai, and Taipei Fine Arts Museum, her exhibition “Nested” is the result of several years of research in different geographical contexts, starting with Italy and Asia. New directions are apparent in her work, including contemplation, our relation to the vegetable and the mineral, the multiplicity of modes of existence, and the possibility of a personal relationship with history. Like the exhibitions, this publication was conceived to be like a notebook: a form that brings together impressions that have occurred in everyday life—be they visual, sound, or memory related—and blends them in a subjective and intuitive way, allowing a whole network of echoes and correspondences to be deployed. Combining texts of Doryun Chong, Emanuele Coccia, Christophe Gallois, and Katrin Weilenmann with a series of “visual chapters” conceived by the artist in close collaboration with graphic designer Anja Lutz, it constitutes the most comprehensive book on Su-Mei Tse's work to date. Copublished with the Aargauer Kunsthaus, Aarau, and Mudam Luxembourg Contributors Doryun Chong, Emanuele Coccia, Christophe Gallois, Katrin Weilenmann
