Book Brown Trans Figurations

Download or read book Brown Trans Figurations written by Francisco J. Galarte and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2021-01-28 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honorable Mention for the National Women’s Studies Association's 2021 Gloria E. Anzaldúa Book Prize 2021 Finalist Best LGBTQ+ Themed Book, International Latino Book Awards 2022 John Leo & Dana Heller Award for Best Single Work, Anthology, Multi-Authored, or Edited Book in LGBTQ Studies, Popular Culture Association The Alan Bray Memorial Book Prize, GL/Q Caucus, Modern Language Association (MLA) 2022 AAHHE Book of the Year Award, American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education Within queer, transgender, and Latinx and Chicanx cultural politics, brown transgender narratives are frequently silenced and erased. Brown trans subjects are treated as deceptive, unnatural, nonexistent, or impossible, their bodies, lives, and material circumstances represented through tropes and used as metaphors. Restoring personhood and agency to these subjects, Francisco J. Galarte advances “brown trans figuration” as a theoretical framework to describe how transness and brownness coexist within the larger queer, trans, and Latinx historical experiences. Brown Trans Figurations presents a collection of representations that reveal the repression of brown trans narratives and make that repression visible and palpable. Galarte examines the violent deaths of two transgender Latinas and the corresponding narratives that emerged about their lives, analyzes the invisibility of brown transmasculinity in Chicana feminist works, and explores how issues such as transgender politics can be imagined as part of Chicanx and Latinx political movements. This book considers the contexts in which brown trans narratives appear, how they circulate, and how they are reproduced in politics, sexual cultures, and racialized economies.

Book excerpt: Events are “generative moments” in at least three senses: events are created by and condense larger-scale social structures; as moments, they spark and give rise to new social processes; in themselves, events may also serve to analyze social situations and relationships. Based on ethnographic studies from around the world—varying from rituals and meetings over protests and conflicts to natural disasters and management—this volume analyzes generative moments through events that hold the key to understanding larger social situations. These events—including the Ashura ritual in Bahrain, social cleavages in South Africa, a Buddhist cave in Nepal, drought in Burkina Faso, an earthquake in Pakistan, the cartoon crisis in Denmark, corporate management at Bang & Olufsen, protest meetings in Europe, and flooding and urban citizenship in Mozambique—are not simply destructive disasters, crises, and conflicts, but also generative and constitutive of the social.

Book Radical Ethnic Movements in Contemporary Europe

Download or read book Radical Ethnic Movements in Contemporary Europe written by Farimah Daftary and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nation states and minorities resort more and more to violence when safeguarding their political interests. Although the violence in the Middle East has been dominating world politics for some time now, European governments have had their share of ethnic violence to contend with as this volume demonstrates. And as the case studies show, ranging as they do from the Basque Country to Chechnya, from Northern Ireland to Bosnia-Herzegovina, this applies to western Europe as much as to eastern Europe. However, in contrast to other parts of the world, instances where political struggles for power and social inclusion between minorities and majorities lead to full-fledged inter-ethnic warfare are still the exception; in the majority of cases conflicts are successfully de-escalated and even resolved. In a comprehensive conclusion, the volume offers a theoretical framework for the development of strategies to deal with violent ethnic conflict.

Book Figurations of Violence and Belonging

Download or read book Figurations of Violence and Belonging written by Adi Kuntsman and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a critical analysis of the complex relationship between violence and belonging, by exploring the ways sexual, ethnic or national belonging can work through, rather than against, violence. Based on an ethnographic study of Russian-speaking, queer immigrants in Israel/Palestine and in cyberspace, it gives an insight into the world of hate speech and fantasies of torture and sexual abuse; of tormented subjectivities and uncanny homes; of ghostly hauntings from the past and anxieties about the present and future. The author raises questions about the responsibilities of national homemaking, the complicity of queerness within violent regimes of colonialism and war, and the ambivalence of immigrant belonging at the intersection of marginality and privilege. Drawing from scholarship on migration, diaspora and race studies, feminist and queer theory, psychoanalysis and studies on cyberculture, the book traces the interplay between the different forms of violence - physical and verbal, social and psychic, material and discursive - and offers novel insights into the analysis of nationalism, on-line sociality and queer migranthood.

Book Communicative Figurations

Download or read book Communicative Figurations written by Andreas Hepp and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access volume assesses the influence of our changing media environment. Today, there is not one single medium that is the driving force of change. With the spread of various technical communication media such as mobile phones and internet platforms, we are confronted with a media manifold of deep mediatization. But how can we investigate its transformative capability? This book answers this question by taking a non-media-centric perspective, researching the various figurations of collectivities and organizations humans are involved in. The first part of the book outlines a fundamental understanding of the changing media environment of deep mediatization and its transformative capacity. The second part focuses on collectivities and movements: communities in the city, critical social movements, maker, online gaming groups and networked groups of young people. The third part moves institutions and organizations into the foreground, discussing the transformation of journalism, religion, politics, and education, whilst the fourth and final part is dedicated to methodologies and perspectives.

Book Metamorphoses

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rosi Braidotti
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2013-07-10
  • ISBN : 0745665748
  • Pages : 747 pages

Download or read book Metamorphoses written by Rosi Braidotti and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-07-10 with total page 747 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discussions about the ethical, political and human implications of the postmodernist condition have been raging for longer than most of us care to remember. They have been especially fierce within feminism. After a brief flirtation with postmodern thinking in the 1980s, mainstream feminist circles seem to have turned their back on the staple notions of poststructuralist philosophy. Metamorphoses takes stock of the situation and attempts to reset priorities within the poststructuralist feminist agenda. Cross-referring in a creative way to Deleuze's and Irigaray's respective philosophies of difference, the book addresses key notions such as embodiment, immanence, sexual difference, nomadism and the materiality of the subject. Metamorphoses also focuses on the implications of these theories for cultural criticism and a redefinition of politics. It provides a vivid overview of contemporary culture, with special emphasis on technology, the monstrous imaginary and the recurrent obsession with 'the flesh' in the age of techno-bodies. This highly original contribution to current debates is written for those who find changes and transformations challenging and necessary. It will be of great interest to students and scholars of philosophy, feminist theory, gender studies, sociology, social theory and cultural studies.

Book Rhetorical Speculations

Download or read book Rhetorical Speculations written by Scott Sundvall and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of writing studies is fundamentally tied to advancing technological development—writing cannot be done without a technology and different technologies mediate writing differently. In Rhetorical Speculations, contributors engage with emerging technologies of composition through “speculative modeling” as a strategy for anticipatory, futural thinking for rhetoric and writing studies. Rhetoric and writing studies often engages technological shifts reactively, after the production and reception of rhetoric and writing has changed. This collection allows rhetoric and writing scholars to explore modes of critical speculation into the transformative effect of emerging technologies, particularly as a means to speculate on future shifts in the intellectual, pedagogical, and institutional frameworks of the field. In doing so, the project repositions rhetoric and writing scholars as proprietors of our technological future to come rather than as secondary receivers, critics, and adjusters of the technological present. Major and emerging voices in the field offer a range of styles that include pragmatic, technical, and philosophical approaches to the issue of speculative rhetoric, exploring what new media/writing studies could be—theoretically, pedagogically, and institutionally—as future technologies begin to impinge on the work of writing. Rhetorical Speculations is at the cutting edge of the subject of futures thinking and will have broad appeal to scholars of rhetoric, literacy, futures studies, and material and popular culture. Book Figurations of Exile in Hitchcock and Nabokov

Download or read book Figurations of Exile in Hitchcock and Nabokov written by Barbara Straumann and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2008-12-16 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes an important contribution to cultural analysis by opening up the work of two canonical authors to issues of exile and migration. Barbara Straumann's close reading of selected films and literary texts focuses on Speak, Memory, Lolita, The Real Life of Sebastian Knight, Suspicion, North by Northwest and Shadow of a Doubt and explores the connections between language, imagination and exile. Invoking psychoanalysis as the principal discourse of dislocation, the book not only uses concepts such as 'screen memory', 'family romance', 'fantasy' and 'the uncanny' as hermeneutic foils, it also argues that, in their own ways, the arch-parodists Hitchcock and Nabokov are remarkably in tune with the images and tropes developed by Freud.

Book Figurations of France

Download or read book Figurations of France written by Marcus Keller and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-22 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Figurations of France: Literary Nation-Building in Times of Crisis (1550-1650), Marcus Keller explores the often indirect and subtle ways in which key texts of early modern French literature, from Joachim Du Bellay’s Défense et illustration de la langue française to Corneille’s Le Cid, contribute to the fiction of France as a nation. Through his fresh take on these and other classics, he shows that they not only create the French as an imaginary community but also provide venues for an incisive critique of the political and cultural construct that underpins the modern nation-state. Current theories of nationhood, in particular the concepts of the nation form and fictive ethnicity (Étienne Balibar), inform the close readings of Du Bellay’s Défense, Ronsard’s Discours, d’Aubigné’s Tragiques, Montaigne’s Essays, Malherbe’s odes, and Corneille’s Le Cid and Horace. They reveal the imaginary power and unifying force of early modern figurations of France that come to bear in this heteregoneous corpus of French literature, with texts ranging from manifesto and epic poem to essay and tragedy. Situating each author and text in their particular historical context, the study suggests that the literary invention of France in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries is as abundant as it is conceptually innovative: Du Bellay, for example, develops an idea of France by portraying the French language as a pruned and grafted tree while d’Aubigné proposes to think of the French as a nuclear but fatherless family. Blood functions as a highly charged metaphor of nationhood in all texts. Opening up new perspectives on these canonical works, the focus on literary nation-building also puts them into unexpected and thought-provoking relationships to each other. Figurations of France deliberately crosses the fictive boundary between the sixteenth and the seventeenth centuries and argues that, in terms of imaginary nation-building, the contours that delineate the early modern period and separate it from what we call the modern era quickly begin to dissolve. Ultimately, the book makes the case for early modern literature as a creative and critical discourse, able to nourish and nuance our thinking about the nation as the postmodern nation-state is increasingly called into question by the economical, political, and cultural effects of globalization. Published by University of Delaware Press. Distributed worldwide by Rutgers University Press.

Book SN3 Collection of Interlaced Speeches

Download or read book SN3 Collection of Interlaced Speeches written by Tomás Morales y Durán and published by Libros de Verdad. This book was released on 2024-03-31 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of the Factors of Clinging to Existence is the third of the five books of the Interwoven Discourses. It is named after its first saṃyutta which is the dominant one both in length and importance, since it deals with a key aspect of the teachings. The analysis of the factors of clinging to existence represents the logical level systematization of experience and is key to understanding suffering and describes how we are chained to Samsara. Experience involves five processes: qualia, emotional reaction, perception, conditional situation and cognition. The first is the process related to sense inputs and the other four are the processes of conceptualization. Qualia are the result of encoding and processing inputs from the six sense gates: sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch and intellect, and deliver images, sounds, smells, tastes, tactile sensations and ideas. The emotional reaction is the first thing that intervenes through the limbic system and is the process that translates the experience into pleasant, unpleasant or indifferent. A pleasant experience will incite clinging and an unpleasant one, aversion. Perception is the process that gives meaning to the experience. The conditional situation affects the experience from the moment in which the same experience is not processed in the same way over time depending on the previous history. Each experience will change the conditional situation so that no experience will be repeated. Our perception of time is a conceptualization of the conditional situation. And finally, cognition is the act of knowing. As we see, all these components are perishable and last as long as the experience lasts. We have no other connection with Samsara than these five elements which, grouped together, we will call qualia and conceptualization. Understand that all five are conditioned and therefore perishable. That what is conditioned we have no control over. And that over which one has no control cannot be said to be "me" or "mine". And that which is neither me, nor mine, which is perishable and conditioned, is unsatisfactory. And that which is unsatisfactory becomes easy to abandon. And abandoning it, one abandons the enchainment to Samsara. We see that the consciousness is clinging to existence by these five clinging factors. Liberation is untying the consciousness from these five factors and constitutes the ultimate goal. A consciousness untied from Samsara is a free consciousness and freedom is Nibbāna. This is the core of the Dhamma. Of the remaining booklets, three continue with this theme and the rest deal with various secondary subjects, some organized by theme, others by persons. Of note is the saṃyutta devoted to the Nāgas, beings whose bodies are described as those of serpents, although they can assume human form at will. Also to the Supaṇṇas, mythical creatures imagined as winged, considered enemies of the nāgas, the Gandhabbas, a class of semi-divine beings who inhabit the Cātummahārājika realm and are the lowest among the devas, and the Valāhakas who are the cloud devas who control the weather.

Book The Future of the Image

Download or read book The Future of the Image written by Jacques Rancière and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Future of the Image, Jacques Rancire develops a fascinating new concept of the image in contemporary art, showing how art and politics have always been intrinsically intertwined. He argues that there is a stark political choice in art: it can either reinforce a radical democracy or create a new reactionary mysticism. For Rancire there is never a pure art: the aesthetic revolution must always embrace egalitarian ideals.

Book Future Spacecraft Propulsion Systems and Integration

Download or read book Future Spacecraft Propulsion Systems and Integration written by Paul A. Czysz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-30 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The updated and expanded third edition of this book focuses on the multi-disciplinary coupling between flight-vehicle hardware alternatives and enabling propulsion systems. It discusses how to match near-term and far-term aerospace vehicles to missions and provides a comprehensive overview of the subject, directly contributing to the next-generation space infrastructure, from space tourism to space exploration. This holistic treatment defines a mission portfolio addressing near-term to long-term space transportation needs covering sub-orbital, orbital and escape flight profiles. In this context, a vehicle configuration classification is introduced covering alternatives starting from the dawn of space access. A best-practice parametric sizing approach is introduced to correctly design the flight vehicle for the mission. This technique balances required mission with the available vehicle solution space and is an essential capability sought after by technology forecasters and strategic planners alike.
