Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cystic Fibrosis wasn't going to let go of this child, and the young pediatrician knew this. As Dr. Miller hung the boxing gloves on the corner of the crib, even he couldn't imagine the depth of the battle this young boy would face. Strength, faith, an insatiable will to live, and those gloves, will be called on for survival. Cystic Fibrosis, this fatal lung disease, doesn't let go. How does one respond when told that without a lung transplant, your lungs will fail within just a few months? In Fighting with Crib Gloves, Richard Keane invites us on his journey from childhood, when first told Cystic Fibrosis is the reason he coughs and gasps for breath, to the present day. Now 57 years old, it has been seven years since he received his new lungs. Though lesser strains of the disease exist, CF has no cure and yields a life expectancy of 36 years. Throughout his memoirs, Richard displays the sense of humor that has served him well as he dealt with many physical hardships. Fighting with Crib Gloves is a work by an author who urges his readers to recognize that despite personal challenges, brutally difficult as some may be, perseverance, with hope and laughter in your heart and soul, must prevail.

Book Prizefighting

Download or read book Prizefighting written by Arne K. Lang and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-09-17 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work brings a fresh perspective to the history of modern prizefighting, a sport which has evolved over several centuries to become one of mankind's most lasting and valued sporting attractions. With his primary focus outside the ropes, the author shows how organizers, publicity agents, and political allies overcame both legal and moral roadblocks to make fisticuffing a lively commercial enterprise. The book begins with the clandestine bare-knuckle fights in eighteenth-century London, and ends with the vibrant, large-scale productions of modern Las Vegas "fight nights." Along the way, he explains many of the myths about antiquarian prizefighters, describes the origins of slave fight folklore, and examines the forces that transformed Las Vegas into the world's leading venue for important fights.

Book Hounds in the Morning

Download or read book Hounds in the Morning written by Carl B. Cone and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the rolling countryside of Regency England sound the call of the horn and the chorus of hounds, as huntsmen, hounds, and horses tear across fields and leap fencerows in ardent pursuit of Reynard. In a field outside London, two brawny men strip to the waist and prepare to batter each other to a pulp for the pleasure of the Fancy—the hundreds of boxing fans who have ridden from all over England to see and bet on the illegal match. And through the streets of a country town, the lads rough-and-tumble in a wildly joyous game of football, while the populace cheers and the shopkeepers board up their windows. Such were the sights and sounds of the sporting life of England a hundred and fifty years ago. This sparkling collection of articles from the Sporting Magazine, dating from 1792 to 1836, attests to the vigor and variety of English sports in that era. The equestrian sports of fox and stag hunting, thoroughbred racing, and coaching were largely the passion of the landed classes, while all ranks of the populace relished bloody contests that set man against man or animal against animal—boxing, cock fighting, bull baiting, rat killing. Throughout the land, team sports such as football and cricket, along with such individual activities as pedestrianism, shooting, archery, and skating, allowed men and women of all walks of life to test their muscles, their endurance, and their nerve. All these people and events filled the pages of the Sporting Magazine, the first periodical devoted exclusively to sports. Carl Cone provides a historical framework for these lively accounts by the first sport journalists. In addition, more than fifty engravings from the heyday of sporting art illustrate the exuberance of the time.

Book The Greatest Fight of Our Generation

Download or read book The Greatest Fight of Our Generation written by Lewis A. Erenberg and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Held on June 22, 1938, in Yankee Stadium, the second Louis-Schmeling fight sparked excitement around the globe. For all its length--the fight lasted but two minutes--it remains one of the most memorable events in boxing history and, indeed, one of the most significant sporting events ever. In this superb account, Lewis A. Erenberg offers a vivid portrait of Joe Louis, Max Schmeling, their individual careers, and their two epic fights, shedding light on what these fighters represented to their nations, and why their second bout took on such international importance. Erenberg shows how in the first fight Schmeling shocked everyone with a dramatic twelfth-round knockout of Louis, becoming a German national hero and a (unwilling) symbol of Aryan superiority. In fact, the second fight was seen around the world in symbolic terms--as a match between Nazism and American democracy. Erenberg discusses how Louis' dramatic first-round victory was a devastating blow to Hitler, who turned on Schmeling and, during the war, had the boxer (then serving as a paratrooper) sent on a series of dangerous missions. Louis, meanwhile, went from being a hero of his race--"Our Joe"--to the first black champion embraced by all Americans, black and white, an important step forward in United States race relations. Erenberg also describes how, after the war, the two boxers became symbols of German-American reconciliation. With Schmeling as a Coca Cola executive, and Louis down on his luck, the former foes became friends, and when Louis died, Schmeling helped pay for his funeral. Here then is a stirring and insightful account of one of the great moments in boxing history, a confrontation that provided global theater on an epic scale.

Book What It Takes

Download or read book What It Takes written by Mark Herzlich and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2011, he became starting linebacker for the New York Giants and triumphed in the Super Bowl—after being told his cancer diagnosis meant he would never play football again.... As a child, Herzlich found true meaning in football, eventually turning his passion into a first-team All-American spot at Boston College. But the budding star was sidelined by persistent, debilitating pain in his left leg. The shocking diagnosis: He had Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare bone cancer. Doctors put his odds of survival as low as ten percent—and no one thought he would be able to run, much less play football, again. Then Herzlich learned of a radical treatment that would give him the best chance to regain his strength and maybe even play football again, but it could cost him his life. Relying on family, friends, faith, and deep wells of determination to help him through treatment, his plan worked. Not only could he run, but he was physically stronger than ever, and mentally ready to battle his way into the NFL. When he was passed over by all thirty-two teams in the draft, he dug deeper and continued his training, winning a spot in the Giants’ training camp and, eventually, on the team. Mark Herzlich fought a battle against cancer, against statistics, and some days against himself. Told with candor and raw emotion, What It Takes is a story for anyone who has ever fought to beat the odds, for anyone who has ever been told that what they are about to attempt is next to impossible.
