Book Fighting to a Finish

Download or read book Fighting to a Finish written by Leon V. Sigal and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945, most Americans rejoiced that the strategy hastened the surrender of Japan. Shortly thereafter questions emerged about necessity and morality of the nuclear attacks and whether the bombings should be seen as the end of World War II or as the beginning of the Cold War. The author skillfully untangles bureaucratic conflicts in U.S. and Japanese governments to show how U.S. demands for unconditional surrender and the agonized Japanese response delayed the war's end--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: Fighting to a finish is a true story of the author’s experiences in a war between a Nigerian “Goliath” and a Biafran “David” where the David fought back with everything he had until he could fight no more. The author detailed his experiences as he led his men in the battle fields at Aba; Ogidi-Abagana; Afor Ugiri-Umuahia; Ngwa-Ntodino; Umuahia-through Imo River to Umuezealla Owere. The story concluded with the dispersal of worn out Biafran soldiers and the author’s 35-mile trek though highways and bush paths to his home. Download or read book The Finish written by Mark Bowden and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2012-10-16 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller: The true behind-the-scenes story of the manhunt for the 9/11 mastermind is “a page-turner” (Minneapolis Star-Tribune). From the author of Black Hawk Down and Hue 1968, this is a gripping account of the hunt for Osama bin Laden. With access to key sources, Mark Bowden takes us inside the rooms where decisions were made and on the ground where the action unfolded. After masterminding the attacks of September 11, 2001, Osama bin Laden managed to vanish. Over the next ten years, as Bowden shows, America found that its war with al Qaeda—a scattered group of individuals who were almost impossible to track—demanded an innovative approach. Step by step, Bowden describes the development of a new tactical strategy to fight this war—the fusion of intel from various agencies and on-the-ground special ops. After thousands of special forces missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, the right weapon to go after bin Laden had finally evolved. By spring 2011, intelligence pointed to a compound in Abbottabad; it was estimated that there was a 50/50 chance that Osama was there. Bowden shows how three strategies were mooted: a drone strike, a precision bombing, or an assault by Navy SEALs. In the end, the president had to make the final decision. It was time for the finish. “In-depth interviews with Obama and other insiders reveal a White House on edge, facing top-secret options, white-knuckle decisions, and unforeseen obstacles . . . Bowden weaves together accounts from Obama and top decision-makers for the full story behind the daring operation.” —Vanity Fair “The most accessible and satisfying book yet written on the climactic event in the United States’ long war against al Qaeda.” —San Francisco Chronicle

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why the title Fight to the Finish? It would be more pleasant and more popular to write of love and peace than of spiritual warfare. Indeed, inner love and peace is a part of the Christian life, and eventually, we will enjoy everlasting love and peace. But there is war ahead before there will be peace. In September 1938, Prime Minister Chamberlain of England claimed that he had negotiated with Hitler Peace in our time. Winston Churchill warned of war around the corner. Who was right? The majority of Israel in Isaiahs day had a similar aversion to unpleasant truths. He was told, Do not prophesy to us right things; speak to us smooth things (Isaiah 30:10). But I cant do that and be faithful to God at the same time. I have a responsibility to God and to my readers to tell biblical truth with as little distortion as possible, although I know that there will be some distortion because I still have a sinful nature and a limited mind. Going back to my first book, I bear the responsibility of a watchman portrayed in Ezekiel 3 and 33in contemporary language, a sentryto sound a warning. The direct preliminary steps to the final battles may have already begunwe can only pinpoint exactly how each piece of the puzzle fits into Gods perfect plan in hindsight. But the final war between Jesus Christ and Satan is coming, and it is reasonable to believe that many who now breathe on this earth will participate in that final fight on one side or the other. This time the consequences cannot be reversed. So I plead with all believers to strap on your spiritual armor of Ephesians 6:1018 and train while there is still some measure of peace. I pray that this book will help you study the scriptures on your own and become practiced in studying the Sword of the Spirit. Dont take my word for everything that I saysearch the scriptures and see for yourselves!

Book Racing to the Finish

Download or read book Racing to the Finish written by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s only authorized book revealing the inside track on his final year of racing and retirement from the driver’s seat. “Time was running out on my charade… My secrets were about to be exposed to the world.” It was a seemingly minor crash at Michigan International Speedway in June 2016 that ended the day early for Dale Earnhardt Jr. What he didn’t know was that it would also end his driving for the year. He’d dealt with concussions before, but concussions are like snowflakes, no two are the same. And recovery can be brutal, and lengthy. When NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt Jr. retired from professional stock car racing in 2017, he walked away from his career as a healthy man. But for years, he had worried that the worsening effects of multiple racing-related concussions would end not only his time on the track but his ability to live a full and happy life. Torn between a race-at-all-costs culture and the fear that something was terribly wrong, Earnhardt tried to pretend that everything was fine, but the private notes about his escalating symptoms that he kept on his phone reveal a vicious cycle: suffering injuries on Sunday, struggling through the week, then recovering in time to race again the following weekend. For the first time, he shares these notes and fully reveals the physical and emotional struggles he faced as he fought to close out his career on his own terms. In this candid reflection, Earnhardt opens up about his frustration with the slow recovery, his admiration for the woman who stood by him through it all, and his determination to share his own experience so that others don’t have to suffer in silence. Steering his way to the final checkered flag of his storied career proved to be the most challenging race and most rewarding finish of his life.

Book excerpt: #1 Wall Street Journal bestseller! Jon Acuff, New York Times best-selling author of Do Over, Quitter, and Start, offers strategies for anyone who's ever wondered, "Why can't I finish what I started?" According to studies, 92 percent of New Year’s resolutions fail. You’ve practically got a better shot at getting into Juilliard to become a ballerina than you do at finishing your goals. For years, I thought my problem was that I didn’t try hard enough. So I started getting up earlier. I drank enough energy drinks to kill a horse. I hired a life coach and ate more superfoods. Nothing worked, although I did develop a pretty nice eyelid tremor from all the caffeine. It was like my eye was waving at you, very, very quickly. Then, while leading a thirty-day online course to help people work on their goals, I learned something surprising: The most effective exercises were not those that pushed people to work harder. The ones that got people to the finish line did just the opposite— they took the pressure off. Why? Because the sneakiest obstacle to meeting your goals is not laziness, but perfectionism. We’re our own worst critics, and if it looks like we’re not going to do something right, we prefer not to do it at all. That’s why we’re most likely to quit on day two, “the day after perfect”—when our results almost always underperform our aspirations. The strategies in this book are counterintuitive and might feel like cheating. But they’re based on studies conducted by a university researcher with hundreds of participants. You might not guess that having more fun, eliminating your secret rules, and choosing something to bomb intentionally works. But the data says otherwise. People who have fun are 43 percent more successful! Imagine if your diet, guitar playing, or small business was 43 percent more successful just by following a few simple principles. If you’re tired of being a chronic starter and want to become a consistent finisher, you have two options: You can continue to beat yourself up and try harder, since this time that will work. Or you can give yourself the gift of done.

Book excerpt: The Army of Northern Virginia's chaotic dispersal began even before Lee and Grant met at Appomattox Court House. As the Confederates had pushed west at a relentless pace for nearly a week, thousands of wounded and exhausted men fell out of the ranks. When word spread that Lee planned to surrender, most remaining troops stacked their arms and accepted paroles allowing them to return home, even as they lamented the loss of their country and cause. But others broke south and west, hoping to continue the fight. Fearing a guerrilla war, Grant extended the generous Appomattox terms to every rebel who would surrender himself. Provost marshals fanned out across Virginia and beyond, seeking nearly 18,000 of Lee's men who had yet to surrender. But the shock of Lincoln's assassination led Northern authorities to see threats of new rebellion in every rail depot and harbor where Confederates gathered for transport, even among those already paroled. While Federal troops struggled to keep order and sustain a fragile peace, their newly surrendered adversaries seethed with anger and confusion at the sight of Union troops occupying their towns and former slaves celebrating freedom. In this dramatic new history of the weeks and months after Appomattox, Caroline E. Janney reveals that Lee's surrender was less an ending than the start of an interregnum marked by military and political uncertainty, legal and logistical confusion, and continued outbursts of violence. Janney takes readers from the deliberations of government and military authorities to the ground-level experiences of common soldiers. Ultimately, what unfolds is the messy birth narrative of the Lost Cause, laying the groundwork for the defiant resilience of rebellion in the years that followed.
