Book Cancer Care for the Whole Patient

Download or read book Cancer Care for the Whole Patient written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-03-19 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer care today often provides state-of-the-science biomedical treatment, but fails to address the psychological and social (psychosocial) problems associated with the illness. This failure can compromise the effectiveness of health care and thereby adversely affect the health of cancer patients. Psychological and social problems created or exacerbated by cancer-including depression and other emotional problems; lack of information or skills needed to manage the illness; lack of transportation or other resources; and disruptions in work, school, and family life-cause additional suffering, weaken adherence to prescribed treatments, and threaten patients' return to health. Today, it is not possible to deliver high-quality cancer care without using existing approaches, tools, and resources to address patients' psychosocial health needs. All patients with cancer and their families should expect and receive cancer care that ensures the provision of appropriate psychosocial health services. Cancer Care for the Whole Patient recommends actions that oncology providers, health policy makers, educators, health insurers, health planners, researchers and research sponsors, and consumer advocates should undertake to ensure that this standard is met.

Book Beating Cancer Can Be Fun

Download or read book Beating Cancer Can Be Fun written by John W. Hall and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-08-24 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How John Hall's book is different from others **John was diagnosed with Melanoma Cancer IV, had surgery to remove 10 metasticized tumors, but afterwards was informed by his Oncologist M.D. that there was little or no hope for recovery-- since Chemo and Radiation Therapy do not work on Melanoma, John felt like he was facing immediate death in the next few months. However under the guidance of a Holistic Nutritionist he was able to rebuild his Immune System. As a result, 2 years later, has conquered his cancer. **As an ex Premedical student, John had studied Inorganic and Organic Chemistry so that he has been able to do research on the causes, preventions, and possible cures for cancers. **John is currently a Family Therapist in Roseville, Ca, and for the past 30 years has counseled the emotional and psychological issues of his clients. He now also counsels cancer patients related to their emotional and relationship problems. [email protected] **His major goal is to help others build up their Immune System. He believes, from experience, cancer can be cured with proper nutrition. The book cover is a microscopic image of a neutrofil swallowing the anthrax bacteria, as the best proof of EVIDENCE-BASED NUTRITION IN SCIENCE TODAY(an example of how the human immune system's defenses are what prevent diseases and cancers). Further explained in Chapter 3 of the book. **The material he presents is brief, in summary form, and is easy to read. He makes suggestions of the best foods to eat, supplements, and healthy waters to consider. **John learned doctors are not gods, don't have the answers to what cures cancers, and patients need to become aware that a healthy nutritional approach for their condition is a viable and doable program. He did it an won. He hopes you will too.

Book Delivering Affordable Cancer Care in the 21st Century

Download or read book Delivering Affordable Cancer Care in the 21st Century written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-06-20 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rising health care costs are a central fiscal challenge confronting the United States. National spending on health care currently accounts for 18 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), but is anticipated to increase to 25 percent of GDP by 2037. The Bipartisan Policy Center argues that "this rapid growth in health expenditures creates an unsustainable burden on America's economy, with far-reaching consequences". These consequences include crowding out many national priorities, including investments in education, infrastructure, and research; stagnation of employee wages; and decreased international competitiveness. In spite of health care costs that far exceed those of other countries, health outcomes in the United States are not considerably better. With the goal of ensuring that patients have access to high-quality, affordable cancer care, the Institute of Medicine's (IOM's) National Cancer Policy Forum convened a public workshop, Delivering Affordable Cancer Care in the 21st Century, October 8-9, 2012, in Washington, DC. Delivering Affordable Cancer Care in the 21st Century summarizes the workshop.

Book Cancer Kickin Warrior

Download or read book Cancer Kickin Warrior written by Inez Whitehead-Dickens and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer in 2001, I was frozen in time. At that time, the only thing I knew about any cancer, is that if you have it, you die. I agonized over things like, am I going to dwindle away and die a painful death? How do I tell my kids? Do I have enough time to get things in order? Who will take care of my husband? My mind went on and on. I looked for someone to talk to who had been diagnosed with my stage of cancer. When I couldn't find any, I thought the worst. I was told that once people go through their ordeal with cancer, they don't want to talk about it. I got on my knees and promised God that if he got me through this, I would become that voice. Well he kept his end of the bargain, and I'm keeping mine. But the stories in this book are not just about me; they are about people who have fought and won their battles with every type and stage of cancer. In talking to them, I learned so much. The trauma one goes through from the beginning of the diagnosis to the end of the treatments makes it understandable that people want to forget it once it's over. But the people in this book wanted to share their stories to let anyone going through this to know it is not a death sentence, and more important-there is life after cancer! Belief in God, positive thinking, and a strong support system will see you through any trial. The stories in this book are also about the people who stand with us and fight for us in the battle against cancer. Without them, we wouldn't survive. So when you read these stories, look at not only the type of cancer they survived, but also the faith, love, and support they had. In some cases you will see how cancer changed their life for the better. So look at their lives post-cancer. Look at their strong, loving support system. When you feel depressed or feel like giving up, pick up this book and read one of the many inspirational stories. You'll learn not to be afraid of cancer; only be afraid if you don't do something about it. Then I guarantee, you too can become not just a survivor, but a Cancer Kickin' Warrior!

Download or read book Cancer written by John H Swinford and published by . This book was released on 2023-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That dreaded word, "Cancer." Your, or someone close to you, medical diagnosis has confirmed it is indeed cancer. Now what? Understanding cancer treatment is essential for individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer and their caregivers. Cancer treatment can vary based on factors such as the type and stage of cancer, the individual's overall health, and treatment goals. Life during cancer treatment can be a significant adjustment, impacting various aspects of your daily routine, emotions, and overall well-being. This book will provide some insight on what you might expect your life to be like during cancer treatment. Treatment is on its way, now it is important to understand that the side effects vary from person to person, and not everyone experiences all of them. The healthcare team is there to help manage side effects and provide guidance tailored to the patient's specific situation. Open communication and a proactive approach to self-care can help one cope with chemotherapy side effects more effectively. Discovering that you are now in remission from cancer is often a moment of relief and celebration. Remission means that there is no evidence of active cancer in the body, although it's important to note that the term can have different interpretations based on the type of cancer and medical context. The reaction to the announcement of remission varies greatly from person to person, and the support they need will as well. Life after cancer is a significant transition that brings a mix of emotions, adjustments, and new perspectives. While it's a time of celebration and relief, it also comes with challenges and changes. Surviving cancer, the possibilities for what one can become are vast and varied. Your experience with cancer can shape your outlook on life, your goals, and your aspirations. Remember that the fight against cancer is unique, and there's no one-size-fits-all experience. While challenges may arise, many individuals find strength and resilience within themselves and their support networks to navigate through this phase of life. Once the fight is won, remember that life after cancer is a unique journey, and there is no perfect formula to the experience. Each experience is valid, and it's important to give the vector time and space to adjust. The champion has already demonstrated incredible strength by overcoming cancer. Cancer survivors can achieve anything. The power to achieve and pursue individual goals lies within you. Challenges like surviving cancer can indeed be transformative experiences that demonstrate an individual's strength, resilience, and determination. While life may present obstacles, the ability to overcome them is a testament to one's inner potential.
