Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nine Years of an Actor's Life And a more honourable and extensive list has rarely issued from a country press, I offer my grateful acknowledgments; and if my book is found worthy their patronage, " - my golden dream is out." To my Critics Let me say, in extenuation of the general crudeness, and the probable want of finish in every chapter of this my first essay in literature, that the necessity for immediate publication prevented the minute correction of each error, - yet I disclaim the cant of indulgence towards my faults: - doubtless they are many, but they are now before the world, and therefore challenge censure: - still I deprecate severe criticism, for none will "Hear me for my cause, and be silent." This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Six Years of the Life of an Actor and Manager, Vol. 1 of 2: Interspersed With Sketches, Anecdotes, and Opinions of the Professional Merits of the Most Celebrated Actors and Actresses of Our Day Having been frequently asked to commit to paper the varied scenes of an actors life, in which I have been engaged, I have commenced, partly from recollection, and partly from memoranda made at various periods, the present journal, under the title of the Life of an Actor and Manager, in the course of which I may have occasion to mention the names of nearly all the European Actors who have appeared upon the American stage during the last twenty years. If any amusement may be derived from such a source, reader, it is at your service; but should the frequent occurrence of the personal pronoun I, disgust you, lay down the book. If you will travel through it - spare its faults - under the assurance of its veracity. Wherever a change of opinion has taken place it is faithfully chronicled, without reference to the first impression, which remains as it first struck the author, thus endeavoring to do full justice to my professional brethren. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Old Actors, Vol. 1 of 2 Dictionary; the names of many of our old actors will be sought here in vain, but they are only those which have fallen into Oblivion, and to which little or no interest is now attached. It is said that the actor's genius dies with him and becomes merely a tradition to succeeding gene rations, and there is too much truth in the saying. Yet it is still possible, from the vivid word-paintings bequeathed to us by contemporaries, to clearly picture many of the famous performances of the past. Such paintings have been assiduously collected, in order to place before the reader a distinct idea of the various schools Of acting, from the rise to that comparative extinction of the player's art which has taken place during the present generation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forty Years on the Stage: Others (Principally) And Myself I think I hear the reader say, What another actor's reminiscences and I am fain to admit that there has been a plentiful crop of them in the last few years. Let me hasten to give my reason and ask excuse for adding mine to the list. In some articles I wrote on stage matters in the Nineteenth Century a few years ago, I was able to say with perfect truth, I have never been interviewed. Ihave neverinspireda paragraph. Ihave never made speeches, and I may add I have never been photographed except at the request of my manager at the time. I was taught, in my early days on the stage, that the actor's duty was behind the proscenium, and that his best and most telling pronouncements were those made when the curtain was up. In that faith I have lived and worked earnestly and sincerely. It is an old-fashioned and out-oi - date creed in these self asserting days, but in the autumn of one's career it is too late to change, and it follows as a matter of course that I am not one of those who consider their lives, their doings or their thoughts of general or public interest. But in my forty-odd years on the stage I. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
