Book Fifty Years in the Royal Navy

Download or read book Fifty Years in the Royal Navy written by Percy Scott and published by . This book was released on 2016-05-19 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With family association with the service going back four generations, Percy Scott entered the Royal Navy as a cadet in 1866, aged just thirteen. Twelve years later, as a young Lieutenant with a growing interest in gunnery, Scott attended a course at H.M.S. Excellent to qualify as a Gunnery Lieutenant. This would mark the beginning of his quest to improve gunnery, and his criticism of the apparatus behind the Navy, at a time when there was stiff opposition towards any form of naval reform. Scott's tenacity did not endear himself to the Admiralty, but times - like attitudes - would change only with a frustrating slowness. Before his final retirement he would see ships evolve from wind propulsion, as steam was still an auxiliary, and fitted with gun carriages reminiscent of centuries gone by, to something more familiar to us today. In Fifty Years in the Royal Navy Scott presents his efforts - and those of his brother officers - to improve the shooting of the British Fleet alongside his account of a lifetime's service, incorporating five wars. Adm. Sir Percy Scott, BT., K.C.B., K.C.V.O., LL.D. (1853-1924) was a Royal Navy officer and pioneer of naval gunnery. Over the course of his career he demonstrated considerable foresight and ingenuity, and remained unyielding in his drive for improvement. Retired in 1913, with the outbreak of WWI he found himself returned to duty, advising the Admiralty on matters of gunnery; ultimately, his vision had proven true. Book Fifty Years in the Royal Navy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fifty Years in the Royal Navy Classic Reprint written by Percy Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Years in the Royal Navy How far these pages may prove of general interest I cannot tell, but they will at least show how opposed the Navy can be to necessary re forms, involving radical departures from traditional routine; the extent to which national interests may be injured owing to conservative forces within, and without, the public services; and what injury the country may suffer from politicians interfering in technical matters, which they necessarily do not understand. It is my hope that ultimate benefit may result from an honest attempt to shed light upon matters of Vital concern to the nation by means of my personal record. In that belief, these reminiscences have been published, and I would only wish to add that nothing has been set down in malice. My intention has been not to attack persons, but to expose rather the weaknesses and defects of our administrative machinery, in so far as I had experience of it. Book The Royal Navy in the Age of Austerity 1919 22

Download or read book The Royal Navy in the Age of Austerity 1919 22 written by G. H. Bennett and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book thoroughly explores and analyses naval policy during the period of austerity that followed the First World War. During this post-war period, as the Royal Navy identified Japan its likely opponent in a future naval war, the British Government was forced to “tighten its belt” and cut back on naval expenditure in the interests of “National Economy”. G.H. Bennett draws connections between the early 20th century and the present day, showing how the same kind of connections exist between naval and foreign policy, the provision of ships for the Royal Navy, business and regional prosperity and employment. The Royal Navy in the Age of Austerity 1919-22 engages with a series of important historiographical debates relating to the history of the Royal Navy, the failures of British Defence policy in the inter-war period and the evolution of British foreign policy after 1919, together with more mundane debates about British economic, industrial, social and political history in the aftermath of the First World War. It will be of great interest to scholars and students of British naval history.

Book excerpt: Type “Mikhail Kalashnikov” into Google and the biography of the inventor will come back to you almost at the speed of light. Squeeze the trigger of a Kalashnikov and a bullet is kicked up the barrel by an archaic chemical explosion that would have been quite familiar to Oliver Cromwell or General Custer. The gun—antique, yet contemporary—still dominates the world. Geopolitical events and even consumer culture have been molded by the often-unseen research that firearms evoked. The new science of Galileo Galilei and Isaac Newton owed much to the Renaissance study of ballistics. But research into making guns and aiming them also brought on the more recent invention of mass production and kickstarted the contemporary field of artificial intelligence. This book follows the history of the gun and its often-unsuspected wider linkages, looking from the first cannons to modern gunnery, and to the yet-to-be-realized electrical futures of rays and beams.
