Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forty-Sixth Annual Report of the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station, Conducted Jointly by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering: For the Fiscal Year Ended June 30, 1923, Statistical Report Year Ending December 1, 1923 It has seemed wise in making this report to alter the form of the general summary somewhat for the purpose-of calling attention to the many lines Tof investigative work being conducted by the Experiment Station on its branch station farms. There are seven of these farms in addition to the Central Farm at the State College. In order, these seven farms are; The Swine Station near Raleigh, the Mountain Branch Station near Swannanoa, the Piedmont Branch Station near Statesville, the Tobacco Branch Station near Oxford, the Upper Coastal Plain Branch Station near Rocky Mount, the Coastal Plain Branch Station near Willard, and the Blackland Branch Station near Wenona. On these farms, as well as on the Central farm, the work has been carried along in a satisfactory manner. Progress is recorded in each of the various projects, and many permanent improvements have been made in physi cal equipment. The i'swine Station is a new addition to the research facilities, and was made possible by a donation On the part of the State Department of Agriculture of the Old hog cholera serum plant for research work with swine. Though not occurring during the period covered by this report, the death of Commissioner of Agriculture, W. A. Graham, was a serious loss to the agricultural life of the State. Commissioner Graham died on Christmas Eve, 1923, after fifteen years of service as head of the Depart ment of Agriculture. He was succeeded by his son, W. A. Graham, J r., on the appointment of Governor Cameron Morrison. The resignation of Dr. W. C. Riddick as President of the State College and the election by the Trustees of Dr. E. C. Brooks was. Another important change affecting the official life of the Experiment Station. Dr. Brooks came to the College after serving for some years as State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and With an established record of educational activity behind him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sixtieth Annual Report of the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station: For the Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 1937, Progress Report for Year Ending December 1, 1937 The Department of Agricultural Economics posts the monthly labor and cost data and at the close of each year prepares a summary statement showing the cost of each crop produced, the cost of producing milk, and also the cost of maintaining the dairy herd. The department also renders assistance to the other cooperating departments in developing ways and means of reducing costs, and in conducting the experiment in such a way as to reflect actual farm operations. A summary of the operations of the experiment has been prepared for each year from 1929 to 1936, inclusive. NO crops were produced in 1933 because the land was divided into a new field arrangement, and this was completed too late for any crops to be grown. The following table shows the yield per acre of various crops since the project was started in 1928. (r. E. L. Greene and C. D. Grinnells.) A study of peach orchard management. - This project, which has been active since 1927, has been completed, and the results will appear soon in a Station bulletin.
