Download or read book The Life and Letters of Philip Quaque the First African Anglican Missionary written by Vincent Carretta and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first edition of the correspondence of Philip Quaque, a prolific writer of African descent whose letters provide a unique perspective on the effects of the slave trade and its abolition in Africa. Born around 1740 at Cape Coast, in what is now Ghana, Quaque was brought to England by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. In 1765 he became the first African ordained as an Anglican priest. He returned to Africa and served for fifty years as the society's missionary and also as chaplain to the Company of Merchants Trading to Africa (CMTA) at Cape Coast Castle, the principal slave-trading site of the CMTA. Quaque sent more than fifty letters to London and North America reporting on his successes and failures, his relationships with European and African authorities, and his observations on the effects of the American and French revolutions on Africa. The regular references to his African mission in popular magazines made Quaque well known in the English-speaking world. Initially writing when the transatlantic slave trade went largely unquestioned, Quaque in his later letters traces the period of abolitionist fervor leading up to the ban in 1808. Although his employers supported and facilitated slavery, Quaque's letters reveal his evolving opposition to both slavery and the slave trade, particularly in his correspondence with early abolitionists. Quaque's life offers a fascinating perspective on transatlantic identity, missionary activity, precolonial European involvement in Africa, the early abolition movement, and Cape Coast society.

Download or read book All Loves Excelling written by R. Pierce Beaver and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 1998-10-30 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to 1800, mission societies had been composed exclusively of men. Then, on October 9 of that year, Miss Mary Webb gathered together fourteen Baptist and Congregational women and organized the Boston Female Society for Missionary Purposes. It would consist of . . . females who are disposed to contribute their mite towards so noble a design as diffusion of gospel light among the shades of darkness and superstition"; dues were set at $2.00 annually. So began a movement which was to spread throughout Massachusetts and, eventually, the entire country. Initially, however, progress was slow. Male prejudice opposed even the practice of women meeting together for prayer and contributing funds to mission work. And even after the role of women as fund-raisers was generally accepted there remained the reluctance of church mission boards to give to women a share in policy and decision making. Eventually the women organized their own missionary sending societies; these groups were largely responsible for sending single women into the mission fields - another practice which had long been opposed by denominational boards. R. Pierce Beaver traces the development of this fascinating movement, paying attention not only to its broad outlines, but also to the individual pioneers who led the way.

Download or read book Imagining Soldiers and Fathers in the Mid Victorian Era written by Dr Susan Walton and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-04-28 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with the premise that women's perceptions of manliness are crucial to its construction, Susan Walton focuses on the life and writings of Charlotte Yonge as a prism for understanding the formulation of masculinities in the Victorian period. Yonge was a prolific writer whose bestselling fiction and extensive journalism enjoyed a wide readership. Walton situates Yonge's work in the context of her family connections with the army, showing that an interlocking of worldly and spiritual warfare was fundamental to Yonge's outlook. For Yonge, all good Christians are soldiers, and Walton argues persuasively that the medievalised discourse of sanctified violence executed by upright moral men that is often connected with late nineteenth-century Imperialism began earlier in the century, and that Yonge's work was one major strand that gave it substance. Of significance, Yonge also endorsed missionary work, which she viewed as an extension of a father's duties in the neighborhood and which was closely allied to a vigorous promotion of refashioned Tory paternalism. Walton's study is rich in historical context, including Yonge's connections with the Tractarians, the effects of industrialization, and Britain's Imperial enterprises. Informed by extensive archival scholarship, Walton offers important insights into the contradictory messages about manhood current in the mid-nineteenth century through the works of a major but undervalued Victorian author.

Download or read book The Gods are not Jealous written by Rahman Yakubu and published by Evangelische Verlagsanstalt. This book was released on 2022-10-25 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rahman Yakubu critiques the notion that Islam and Christianity in Africa have been benevolent to African Traditional Religion (ATR) in their interreligious encounter. Rather, he argues that ATR plays an active and central role in creating a peaceful interreligious space in Africa. Using an ethnographic study of rituals in the rites of passage among Dagomba Muslims, Christians and adherents of ATR of Ghana, the author concludes that Dagomba religio-culture has influenced not only the identity of adherents of the two faiths, but also the relations between them. This book proposes that, for a constructive negotiating of religious identity and peaceful interreligious existence, Traditional Religions should be considered an equal partner in interreligious dialogue.
