This book was released on 1995-02-28 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the lectures delivered at the Second Paris Cosmology Colloquium (second ‘Journée Cosmologie’) held at the Observatoire de Paris from June 2 to 4, 1994.[The first ‘Journée Cosmologie’ was held from May 18 to 19, 1993.]The purpose of these meetings is to cover selected topics of high current interest in the interplay between cosmology and fundamental physics and to allow easy and fruitful mutual contacts and communication. The main aim is to put in contact fundamental theoretical physics (including string theory) with real physical problems that arise in the study of the universe. The Paris Cosmology Colloguia are informal meetings which bring together physicists, astrophysicists and astronomers.Topics covered in the Second Paris Cosmology Colloquium included: fundamental strings and cosmic strings in cosmology, evolution out of the equilibrium of quantum fields in primordial cosmology, dark matter, as well as other subjects of high current interest related to black holes and quantum gravity.Sessions in the 1994 meeting lasted for three days leaving time for private discussions and for enjoying the beautiful parisian campus of the Observatoire de Paris (built on orders from Colbert and to plans by Claude Perrault from 1667 to 1672). Sessions took place at the ‘Salle du Conseil’ in the historic Perrault building under the portraits of Laplace, Le Verrier, Lalande, Arago, Delambre and Louis XIV.

Book Current Topics in Astrofundamental Physics The Cosmic Microwave Background

Download or read book Current Topics in Astrofundamental Physics The Cosmic Microwave Background written by Norma G. Sànchez and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This NATO Advanced Study Institute provided an up dated understanding, from a fundamental and deep point of view, of the progress and current problems in the early universe, cosmic microwave background radiation, large scale structure, dark matter problem, and the interplay between them. The focus was placed on the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation. Emphasis was given to the mutual impact of fundamental physics and cosmology, both at theoretical and experimental-or observational-levels, within a deep and well defined programme, and a global unifying view, which, in addition, provides of careful inter-disciplinarity. Special Lectures were devoted to neutrinos in astrophysics and high energy astrophysics. In addition, each Course of this series, introduced and promoted topics or subjects, which, although not being of purely astrophysical or cosmological nature, were of relevant physical interest for astrophysics and cosmology. Deep understanding, clarification, synthesis, careful interdisciplinarity within a fundamental physics framework, werethe maingoals ofthe course. Lectures ranged from a motivation and pedagogical introduction for students and participants not directly working in the field to the latest developmentsand most recent results. All Lectures were plenary, had the same duration and were followed by a discussion. The Course brought together experimentalists and theoretical physicists, astrophysicists and astronomers from a variety of backgrounds, including young scientists at post-doctoral level, senior scientists and advanced graduatestudentsas well.

Book The Ninth Marcel Grossman Meeting MGIXMM

Download or read book The Ninth Marcel Grossman Meeting MGIXMM written by Robert T. Jantzen and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2002-12-01 with total page 2746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1975 the Marcel Grossmann Meetings were established by Remo Ruffini and Abdus Salam to provide a forum for discussion of recent advances in gravitation, general relativity, and relativistic field theories. In these meetings, which are held once every three years, every aspect of research is emphasized - mathematical foundations, physical predictions, and numerical and experimental investigations. The major objective of these meetings is to facilitate exchange among scientists, so as to deepen our understanding of the structure of space-time and to review the status of both the ground-based and the space-based experiments aimed at testing the theory of gravitation. The Marcel Grossmann Meetings have grown under the guidance of an International Organizing Committee and a large International Coordinating Committee. The first two meetings, MG1 and MG2, were held in Trieste (1975, 1979). A most memorable MG3 (1982) was held in Shanghai and represented the first truly international scientific meeting in China after the so-called Cultural Revolution. Three years later MG4 was held in Rome (1985). It was at MG4 that ';astroparticle physics'; was born.MGIXMM was organized by the International Organizing Committee composed of D Blair, Y Choquet-Bruhat, D Christodoulou, T Damour, J Ehlers, F Everitt, Fang Li Zhi, S Hawking, Y Ne'eman, R Ruffini (chair), H Sato, R Sunyaev, and S Weinberg. Essential to the organization was an International Coordinating Committee of 135 members from scientific institutions of 54 countries. MGIXMM was attended by 997 scientists of 69 nationalities. It took place on 2-8 July 2000 at the University of Rome, Italy. The scientific programs included 60 plenary and review talks, as well as talks in 88 parallel sessions. The three volumes of the proceedings of MGIXMM present a rather authoritative view of relativistic astrophysics, which is becoming one of the priorities in scientific endeavour. The papers appearing in these volumes cover all aspects of gravitation, from mathematical issues to recent observations and experiments. Their intention is to give a complete picture of our current understanding of gravitational theory at the turn of the millennium. The Marcel Grossmann Individual Awards for this meeting were presented to Cecille and Bryce DeWitt, Riccardo Giacconi and Roger Penrose, while the Institutional Award went to the Solvay Institute, accepted on behalf of the Institute by Jacques Solvay and Ilya Prigogine. The acceptance speeches are also included in the proceedings.

Book The Fair and Responsible Use of Space

Download or read book The Fair and Responsible Use of Space written by Wolfgang Rathgeber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-02-03 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As space applications become central to modern interaction, more and more entities are becoming involved in space activities. Consequently, strategies to establish the coordinated, ethically justifiable and sustainable conduct of space activities have to be found. Such an endeavour requires addressing current questions regarding the use of space, dealing with fair rules in orbit and discussing the way towards achieving truly global engagement on space security issues. The book outlines the current situation and identifies key challenges from the policy perspective. Taking this one step further, it also formulates principles and recommendations for global action. Nineteen eminent personalities from the space sector have united for this project, which is based on a conference organised at the European Space Policy Institute (ESPI) in November 2008 in Vienna.
