Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifteenth Report of the Fish Commissioners of the State of Connecticut, to the General Assembly, January Session, 1881 The territorial extent of Connecticut, only square miles, is insignificant in comparison with that of most of her sister States, only three being smaller than herself. Her waters, therefore, are not so numerous nor so extensive for varied cultivation; but the Com missioners believe that in the progress made towards a complete development of her limited resources she is second to no other State. This work began with the introduction of full-grown black bass into the principal ponds of each County in the State, and it proved an encouraging success. About the same time an attempt was made to restock the depleted rivers of the State with such fish as had been known to thrive there in earlier times. It was believed that the shad and salmon, for example, could be restored to the Connecticut, the Housatonic and the Thames rivers, where they once abounded. The experiments with shad resulted in a rapid and positive success. With salmon, however, the processes were much slower and more laborious; but the result was all that had been anticipated by the most sanguine. The experience gained in these triumphs encouraged the Commissioners in the further work of procuring new species fish suited to the larger ponds. So land-locked salmon, a superb fish, was introduced, and it is doing well. Finally the past year, trout have been artificially raised and distributed; and carp, sup plied by Prof. Baird, have been introduced. The trout occupy the smaller brooks scattered among the hills and valleys while the carp finds his home in the swampy and muddy ponds of the lowlands. The Commissioners are confident that within a verv few years these two species will abound in every town in the State. This book was released on 2018-08-15 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eighteenth Report of the Fish Commissioners of the State of Connecticut, to the General Assembly: January Session, 1884 Two clippings from local papers, showing that the fishermen are becoming interested in this subject, are here inserted. The first one was from up the river early in June, and the second one appeared in one of the Hartford dailies: AS far as is known, the catch Of Shad among local fishermen on the river has thus far amounted to two, and this haul occurred some weeks ago. The fish are scarce and high everywhere on this river, and reports from the Hudson tell the same story. Last year the Hartford Shippers and packers paid about $22, taking them as they run. Now they bring $35, and our dealers claim that they have to add $3 for freight, etc. It is' asserted that the fish are growing scarcer each year. Of course the sales fell off very much in quantity, because of the enhanced price. One Hartford firm report that their Saybrook pounds have produced an average take Of about this year, or half the yield in 1882. The Shrinkage right through is estimated at fifty per cent., although, as the season lasts till the 2oth, a better showing may be made before its close. The reason for the falling off is laid to the failure to pass stringent laws to prevent the taking Of young Shad, and the unwillingness Of the fish to enter a stream so polluted by sewage and manufacturers' chemicals as the Connecticut is becoming. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sixteenth Annual Report of the Fish Commissioners, and First Report of the Shell Fish Commissioners of the State of Connecticut to the General Assembly, January Session 1882 The Commissioners on Fisheries respectfully present their Sixteenth Report. By an Act of the last General Assembly, the Fish Com missioners were constituted a Board of Commissioners on Shell Fisheries, and their duties were prescribed by the said Act. What they have done in this new position, will be found detailed in the latter portion of this report. While much of their time has been absorbed in this work, they have not been neglectful of the fish cultural interests of the State, but have continued the artificial propagation of the favorite varieties of fish to the utmost extent permitted by the appropriation for this purpose. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Bank Commissioners of the State of Connecticut, to the General Assembly: January Session, 1881 While this condensed exhibit of the condition of the Savings Banks shows at a glance, their prosperous condition, there are some points to which special attention should be called. There has been an increase of in the volume of deposits during the year, making the aggregate larger than has ever before been reported, with the exception of the years 1876 and 1877. Undrawn interest, which is semi-annually credited to depositors, undoubtedly contributed largely to make up this amount, but the fact that this interest is not drawn, and is not needed by depositors, is the best evidence that the revival of business interests has brought with it substantial prosperity. It is particularly gratifying to note the fact in connection with this increase in the volume Of deposits, that the number Of small depositors has largely increased; there are more than last year having less than $500 each on deposit. The increase in the aggregate amount of deposits in this class is 8205038690, and as not over could have been credited for interest, at least must have been freshly deposited. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tenth Annual Report of the Commissioners of Inland Fisheries: Made to the General Assembly, at Its January Session; A. D. 1881 To the Honorable the General Assembly of the State of Rhode Island, January Session. 1881. The Commissioners of Inland Fisheries beg leave to present their report for the year 1881. In the report for the year 1880, diagrams were given of the traps set at Seaconnet Point and at the south end of the island of Rhode Island, and also of the location of all the heart nets in Xarrngansett Bay. It has been thought best not to go to this expense this year. The sets of the traps are about the same from one year to another. The heart nets or pounds vary more in locality, and were all visited and marked on the chart by the commissioners in July and August last. They found forty-one (41) of these pounds in active operation, an increase of ten (10) over the year previous. The commissioners appointed the same deputies as in 1870, as they supposed they were the persons who were best adapted by their former experience for the office. The catch of senp in the traps this Spring was not so large as usual, and was estimated to be less by two-thirds than that of 1870, but prices were better, and it is to be supposed most of the fishermen received a fair price for their labor. So far as the trap fishing is concerned the commissioners have seen no reason to change their views given in their last report to your Honorable Body, and respectfully refer to their report for 1880, as it is hardly worth while to go over the matter a second time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ninth Annual Report of the Commissioners of Inland Fisheries: Made to the General Assembly at the January Session, 1880 The length of time required to hatch the spawn of scup and tautog after it leaves the parent fish has never been ascertained, but probably not more than from two to four weeks and perhaps much less. It is an interesting question and will no doubt be soon settled, through the thorough and complete investigations made each year by Prof. Baird, the United States Commissioner.
