Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by Earl Derr Biggers was originally published in 1928 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. "Behind That Curtain" is set almost exclusively in California (as opposed to Chan's native Hawaii), and tells the story of the former head of Scotland Yard, a detective who is pursuing the long-cold trail of a murderer. Earl Derr Biggers was born on 26th August 1884 in Warren, Ohio, USA. Biggers received his further education at Harvard University, where he developed a reputation as a literary rebel, preferring the popular modern authors, such as Rudyard Kipling and Richard Harding Davis to the established figures of classical literature. Following in their footsteps upon graduating, he himself began a career as a popular writer, penning humorous articles and reviews for the Boston Traveler. While on holiday in Hawaii, Biggers heard tales of a real-life Chinese detective operating in Honolulu, named Chang Apana. This inspired him to create his most enduring legacy in the character of super-sleuth Charlie Chan. The first Chan story "The House Without a Key" (1925) was published as a serialised story in the Saturday Evening Post and then released as a novel in the same year. Biggers went on to write five more Chan novels and all were licensed for movie adaptations by Fox Films. These films were hugely popular with several different actors taking the lead role of Chan. They were even a success in China where the appeal of a character from the country being the hero instead of the villain appealed to film-goers. Eventually, over 40 films were produced featuring the character. Biggers only saw the early on-screen successes of Charlie Chan due to his death at the age of only 48 from a heart attack in April 1933.

Book Behind the Pine Curtain

Download or read book Behind the Pine Curtain written by Gerri Hill and published by Bella Books. This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacqueline Keys was ostracized from her small hometown of Pine Springs, Texas when she was seventeen, sent away because she was gay. Her family was the largest employer in the county, owning Pine Springs Lumber, and her father was mayor of this small town. Her mother could not accept the fact that her only child was gay, could not tolerate the gossip about her family. So, with a hundred dollars in her pocket and a one-way bus ticket out of town, Jacqueline was told not to come back until she had come to her senses. And that included being prepared to marry the son of a business associate of the family. Fifteen years later—long after she'd hitch-hiked to Los Angeles, long after she'd worked nights to put herself through college, and long after she'd written her first best seller, No Place For Family—Jacqueline is persuaded to go back to the tiny town of Pine Springs after her father's death. The quick trip she'd envisioned for the funeral turns into weeks as she learns her father's business is suddenly hers to manage. And she is also again face-to-face with the woman who, as a teen, had been Jackie's first crush. She and Kay had been inseparable as kids, and later as teens. They find themselves falling back into their old habits, and Jackie is soon fighting the same feelings she'd had when she was seventeen. But living behind the pine curtain, Kay is afraid of her love for Jackie, afraid of what her family will say, afraid of how the town will react. Jackie refuses to hide, refuses to crawl back into the closet, so once again, she leaves Pine Springs...alone.

In "The Chinese Parrot," Chan dons a disguise and goes undercover to solve a complex case involving a fake identity, a kidnapping and a murder. Book The Stunning Crown Princess

Download or read book The Stunning Crown Princess written by Mo Shangyangshu and published by Funstory. This book was released on 2020-03-18 with total page 1715 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: She said, "If people don't offend me, then I won't offend them. If they offend me, then I'll pay them three points. If they offend me, then I'll kill them all!" She said, I want to earn a lot of silver, and then walk all over the five kingdoms, the short paper slant, drunk the sky! Her red clothes were rippling, and she had peerless grace and grace. Her exquisite makeup was something that no one could match, and her awe-inspiring presence was incomparable. Her name was Shui Qingyan. She had put on her wedding dress three times, but had left the wedding hall three times in her wedding dress. He was forced into a dead end again and again, and then he was saved again and again. With a flip of his hand, he turned the entire world into a chessboard, trapping her at the same time. At the same time, he also tricked her into hiding himself within the eighteen strongholds, his red clothes rippling like a red lotus, planning on taking the entire world into his arms for fifteen years, but he lost himself because of her. He was an assistant of the National Medical Bureau for eight years. He was a talented young man, handsome, arrogant and unruly. He hid his thoughts in his heart and devoted his life to her without any regrets. In matters of love, who was in the right and who was in the wrong? Who could be sure? The maelstrom of power, to put it bluntly, was neither victorious nor victorious.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late Ming Dynasty (1572-1644) and the early Qing Dynasty (1644-1722) saw the true splendour of short essays in China. No other period in the history of short essays in ancient China can match them in the quality and number of works, literary schools, or the variety of styles. Compared with those written before or after, the short essays in these periods were richer in the choice of topics, and freer in form, focusing not only on real social life, but also on worldly experience and life's little delights. They are a rich and vital part of China's literary and cultural heritage. The 127 short essays in this wonderful book are considered to be the very best examples from an era of China's history that's synonymous with beautifully crafted short essays. 82 essays are from the Ming Dynasty and 45 essays are from the Qing Dynasty, written by more than a hundred different Chinese authors from both dynasties. These are arranged in the order of the authors' birth dates and tenderly translated into English by leading Chinese translators Wang Hong and Zhang Shunsheng, who have faithfully represented the styles and literary achievements made by the featured essayists. It's a wonderful book that will delight fans of classic Chinese short essays, as well as providing the perfect introduction to readers new to the genre.Professor Wang Hong is a prolific and accomplished translator of ancient Chinese classics.
