Download or read book In the Shadow of the Yali written by Suat Dervis and published by Other Press, LLC. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NAMED A MOST-ANTICIPATED BOOK OF THE YEAR BY THE MILLIONS Set in a changing Istanbul, this rediscovered 1940s classic from a pioneering Turkish author tells the story of a forbidden love and its consequences. Raised by her grandmother in one of the famed yalıs, elegant yet crumbling, that line the Bosphorus, Celile occupies a unique space between the old world of the Ottoman Empire and the new world of the Republic. She drifts through ten years of marriage, reserved even with her husband, never tempted to stray from the safe path of respectability. And then one night, intoxicated by a soulful tango, she is suddenly seized with a mad passion for another man, whose reckless pursuit of her should offend but doesn’t. Torn between two men who want to possess her, Celile attempts to live a life true to herself, always keenly aware of the limits placed on her as a woman. In the Shadow of the Yalı marks the highly anticipated English-language debut of feminist writer and activist Suat Derviş. Her sensitive, strikingly modern portrayal of a love affair, with its frank emphasis on the influence of money, provides a fascinating contrast to classic tales of infidelity such as Anna Karenina and Madame Bovary.

Download or read book The Geography of the Hittite Empire written by John Garstang and published by British Institute at Ankara. This book was released on 2017-10-01 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The imperial archives of the Hittite kings include numerous records of military adventure and achievement, of relations with a friend and foe, and of recurring periods of danger to the throne and empire. These fascinating records, however, remain for the most part unintelligible, or at least deprived of their essential value, for want of a reliable map whereby the setting and the scale of the episodes described may be appreciated. At the time of Professor Garstang’s death the first draft of this book was already complete. It has been since been thoroughly revised by Dr. O.R. Gurney, but the ideas which it embodies remain essentially those of Professor Garstang.

Download or read book The Indigo Children written by Lee Carroll and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 1999-05-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A must for the parents of unusually bright and active children! The Indigo Child is a boy or girl who displays a new and unusual set of psychological attributes, revealing a pattern of behavior generally undocumented before. This pattern has singularly unique factors that call for parents and teachers to change their treatment and upbringing of these kids to assist them in achieving balance and harmony in their lives, and to help them avoid frustration. In this groundbreaking book, international authors and lecturers Lee Carroll andJan Tober answer many of the often-puzzling questions surrounding Indigo Children, such as: · Can we really be seeing human evolution in kids today? · Are these kids smarter than we were at their age? · How come a lot of our children today seem to be “system busters”? · Why are so many of our brightest kids being diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)? · Are there proven working alternatives to Ritalin? Throughout this work, Carroll and Tober bring together some very fine minds (doctors, educators, psychologists, and more) who shed light on the Indigo Child phenomenon. These children are truly special, representing a great percentage of all the kids being born today on a worldwide basis. They come in “knowing” who they are—so they must be recognized, celebrated for their exceptional qualities, and guided with love and care.

Download or read book Imperiled Innocents written by Nicola Kay Beisel and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1998-07-27 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moral reform movements claiming to protect children began to emerge in the United States over a century ago, most notably when Anthony Comstock and his supporters crusaded to restrict the circulation of contraception, information on the sexual rights of women, and "obscene" art and literature. Much of their rhetoric influences debates on issues surrounding children and sexuality today. Drawing on Victorian accounts of pregnant girls, prostitutes, Free Lovers, and others deemed "immoral," Nicola Beisel argues that rhetoric about the moral corruption of children speaks to an ongoing parental concern: that children will fail to replicate or exceed their parents' social position. The rhetoric of morality, she maintains, is more than symbolic and goes beyond efforts to control mass behavior. For the Victorians, it tapped into the fear that their own children could fall prey to vice and ultimately live in disgrace. In a rare analysis of Anthony Comstock's crusade with the New York and New England Societies for the Suppression of Vice, Beisel examines how the reformer worked on the anxieties of the upper classes. One tactic was to link moral corruption with the flood of immigrants, which succeeded in New York and Boston, where minorities posed a political threat to the upper classes. Showing how a moral crusade can bring a society's diffuse anxieties to focus on specific sources, Beisel offers a fresh theoretical approach to moral reform movements.

In the situations presented in this book, there is no one right answer to the problem, and the orthodontist must have the confidence and relevant knowledge to formulate the treatment plan most suitable for each patient.
