Download or read book The Fifes in South Africa written by 9176 I. Y. and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fifes in South Africa: Being a History of the Fife and Forfar Yeomanry in the South African War, 1900-1901 When I consented to write an Introduction to the History of the 20th Company, I did so with the feeling that little would be required to introduce or explain the following pages. Briefly, then, this book sets before its readers a history of the work and wanderings of the first active service contingent of the Imperial Yeomanry. The outbreak of the Boer war, and the subsequent development in the military situation in South Africa, necessitated the despatch of a large force of mounted troops in the early part of the year 1900, and all over the country the Yeomanry force formed the nucleus of this general movement. The organisation, equipment, and drilling of the various companies were materially assisted by having existing headquarters and permanent staffs who could deal with the many intricate questions which arose. The country at large, and the officers and men who went out to South Africa, owe to them a debt of gratitude which is difficult to estimate or fittingly to acknowledge. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focus: Music of South Africa provides an in-depth look at the full spectrum of South African music, a musical culture that epitomizes the enormous ethnic, religious, linguistic, class, and gender diversity of the nation itself. Drawing on extensive field and archival research, as well as her own personal experiences, noted ethnomusicologist and South African native Carol A. Muller looks at how South Africans have used music to express a sense of place in South Africa, on the African continent, and around the world. Part One, Creating Connections, provides introductory materials for the study of South African Music. Part Two, Musical Migrations, moves to a more focused overview of significant musical styles in twentieth-century South Africa -- particularly those known through world circuits. Part Three, Focusing In, takes the reader into the heart of two musical cultures with case studies on South African jazz and the music of the Zulu-language followers of Isaiah Shembe. The accompanying downloadable resources offer vivid examples of traditional, popular, and classical South African musical styles.

Book Empire Race and the Politics of Anti Caste

Download or read book Empire Race and the Politics of Anti Caste written by Caroline Bressey and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Women's History Network Prize 2014 Winner of the Robert and Vineta Colby Scholarly Book Prize 2015 Empire, Race and the Politics of Anti-Caste provides the first comprehensive biography of Catherine Impey and her radical political magazine, Anti-Caste. Published monthly from 1888, Anti-Caste published articles that exposed and condemned racial prejudice across the British Empire and the United States. Editing the magazine from her home in Street, Somerset, Impey welcomed African and Asian activists and made Street an important stop on the political tour for numerous foreign guests, reorienting geographies of political activism that usually locate anti-racist politics within urban areas. The production of Anti-Caste marks an important moment in early progressive politics in Britain and, using a wealth of archival sources, this book offers a thorough exploration both of the publication and its founder for those interested in imperial history and the history of women.

Download or read book McCrae s Battalion written by Jack Alexander and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-03-18 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: McCrae's Own was the 'Heart of Midlothian Battalion' mentioned all too briefly in Martin Middlebrook's classic book The First Day on the Somme. Raised in Edinburgh shortly after the start of the Great War, it was perhaps the finest unit in Lord Kitchener's volunteer army - a brotherhood of sportsmen, bound together by their extraordinary colonel and their loyalty to a quaintly named Association Football club, the famous Gorgie 'Hearts'. McCrae's were blooded in the Battle of the Somme, losing three-quarters of their strength on the first day alone. The Colonel himself was invalided home. In time the battalion recovered. It came of age at Arras, endured the muddy horror of Passchendaele, and held the line unbroken in the face of furious German attacks on the Lys in 1918. For almost a century their story remained untold. It was all but lost forever. Now, after 12 years of exacting historical detective work, Jack Alexander has reclaimed the 16th Royal Scots for posterity. In this stirring book he draws upon interviews with veterans and a unique archive of letters, diaries and photographs, assembled from the families of more than 1,000 of Sir George McCrae's men.
