Book Sea Urchin Mitosis in High Magnetic Fields

Download or read book Sea Urchin Mitosis in High Magnetic Fields written by Vernon R. Reno and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mitosis in sea urchin eggs was retarded following their exposure to magnetic fields higher than 70,000 gauss which had gradients greater than 4200 gauss/centimeter. The degree of retardation was correlated simultaneously to both the field strength and the field gradient. Division delay in fields ranging from 100,000 to a maximum of 120,000 gauss was independent of the gradient. Differences in division delay were found which may be a reflection of the differential migration of oxygen and nitrogen due to their para- and diamagnetic properties. An hypothesis is given concerning the biochemical processes affected by magnetic fields. (Author).

Book Sea Routes To The Gold Fields The Migration By Water To California In 1849 1852

Download or read book Sea Routes To The Gold Fields The Migration By Water To California In 1849 1852 written by Oscar Lewis and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is of more specialized interest than Lewis's other books (Silver Kings, The Big Four etc.). This book draws from contemporary material in what was a most articulate migration for a portrayal of life aboard the coast bound steamers of 100 years ago. From the exuberant exodus to the voyage of many days; the initial seasickness, the latter boredom -- and diversions to combat it; the dangers of storm and shipwreck; of scurvy, cholera and yellow fever, which spread more quickly because of crowded conditions; of stops ashore and the Panama crossing; of women passengers -- marriage bound; of the costs of the trip; of the arrival and first impressions...

Download or read book The Sea Is My Country written by Joshua L. Reid and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-26 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the Makahs, a tribal nation at the most northwestern point of the contiguous United States, a deep relationship with the sea is the locus of personal and group identity. Unlike most other indigenous tribes whose lives are tied to lands, the Makah people have long placed marine space at the center of their culture, finding in their own waters the physical and spiritual resources to support themselves. This book is the first to explore the history and identity of the Makahs from the arrival of maritime fur-traders in the eighteenth century through the intervening centuries and to the present day. Joshua L. Reid discovers that the “People of the Cape” were far more involved in shaping the maritime economy of the Pacific Northwest than has been understood. He examines Makah attitudes toward borders and boundaries, their efforts to exercise control over their waters and resources as Europeans and Americans arrived, and their embrace of modern opportunities and technology to maintain autonomy and resist assimilation. The author also addresses current environmental debates relating to the tribe's customary whaling and fishing rights and illuminates the efforts of the Makahs to regain control over marine space, preserve their marine-oriented identity, and articulate a traditional future.

Book Oil Pollution in the Mediterranean Sea Part I

Download or read book Oil Pollution in the Mediterranean Sea Part I written by Angela Carpenter and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-06 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a review of oil inputs to the Mediterranean Sea from sources such as shipping, and offshore exploration and exploitation activities. It discusses international measures to prepare for, respond to, and prevent oil pollution incidents, as well as the international legal framework and agencies with a role in pollution prevention and responses. It includes chapters on modeling the fate of oil pollution, oil spill response, and oil spill beaching probability, and presents data from a range of sources, including historic data on shipping accidents and oil exploration and exploitation activities, satellite and remote sensing data, and numerical modelling data, to provide an overview of oil pollution over several years. Topics covered include modelling of oil slicks in the eastern and western Mediterranean basins, oil exploration and exploitation activities in the waters of the Levantine Basin (Eastern Mediterranean), and signatures to and ratification of the Barcelona Convention and its Protocols, for example. Together with the companion volume Oil Pollution in the Mediterranean Sea: Part II - National Case Studies, it addresses both national and international measures in the region, making it of relevance to the agencies and government bodies tasked with remediating or preventing oil pollution, as well as policymakers and practitioners in the fields of shipping, ports and terminals, oil extraction and marine management. It provides researchers with essential reference material on tools and techniques for monitoring oil pollution, and serves as a valuable resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students in the field of marine oil pollution.

Book Houses Are Fields

    Book Details:
  • Author : Taije Silverman
  • Publisher : LSU Press
  • Release : 2009-05-01
  • ISBN : 9780807134085
  • Pages : 100 pages

Download or read book Houses Are Fields written by Taije Silverman and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2009-05-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taije Silverman's debut collection chronicles her family's devotion and dissolution through the death of her mother. Ranging in style from measured narratives to fragmented lyrics that convey the ambiguity of loss, these poems both arc into the past and question the possibility of the future, exploring the ways in which memory at once sustains and fails love. Ultimately the poems are elegies not only to one beloved mother, but to the large and diffusive presences of Keats, Mandelstam, a concentration camp near Prague, a coming-of-age on a Greek island, and the nearly traceless particles of neutrinos that--as with each detail toward which the poet lends her attention -- become precious as the mother departs from her position at the center of the world. Furious, redemptive, and deeply immediate, Houses are Fields is a beautifully moving first book.
