Book Field Trials of Asphalt Rubber Hot Mix in Virginia

Download or read book Field Trials of Asphalt Rubber Hot Mix in Virginia written by G. W. Maupin and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four test sections using asphalt rubber hot mix were placed in Virginia during the period of 1990 through 1993. The purpose of these installations was to familiarize both contractors and Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) personnel with the construction process and compare the performance of different types of mixes containing ground tire rubber. The MacDonald and Rouse processes, both wet processes, were used successfully. Densegraded surface mixes, a gap-graded surface mix, and a base mix were manufactured. A stress absorbing membrane interlayer was also used on one project in an attempt to deter or eliminate a variety of types of cracking. The asphalt rubber mixes have performed as well as the conventional mixes over the short term. More evaluation time is needed to determine if the long-term performance of the asphalt rubber mixes is superior to that of the conventional mixes. The cost of the asphalt rubber mixes was 64 to 102 percent more than that of the conventional mixes; however, this cost would probably decrease if substantial quantities were placed. VDOT has the necessary experience to contract placement of asphalt rubber mixes if the suspended ISTEA mandate is effected.

Book Performance of Ground Tire Rubber Modified Asphalt Mixture Overlays Over Jointed Concrete Pavements on US 60 in the Virginia Department of Transportation s Richmond District

This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ground tire rubber (GTR) from scrap tires is used in asphalt mixtures (rubber modified asphalt [RMA]) for improving the performance of pavements. There are different ways to add GTR in asphalt mixtures, but the two primary methods are referred to as the “wet” and “dry” processes. The dry process incorporates GTR directly into the asphalt mixture during production (directly to the aggregates through the reclaimed asphalt pavement collar). The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has limited experience with RMA mixtures in Superpave dense-graded mixtures using the dry process, but the relative ease of mixture production makes the dry process an attractive option for RMA. In the fall of 2019, VDOT placed a dense-graded RMA mixture, SM 12.5 (GTR), on US 60 in VDOT’s Richmond District (New Kent County). This was the first use of a SM 12.5 (GTR) mixture in Virginia using the dry process method. The purpose of this study was to establish a performance baseline for a GTR modified dense-graded asphalt mixture that was designed and produced using the dry process. The US 60 project also included the use of a thin hot mix asphalt concrete overlay (THMACO) as an interlayer. An assessment of the THMACO as an interlayer was a secondary objective of the study. The study found that dry process SM 12.5 (GTR) mixture can be produced and placed with no significant field-related concerns and that the special provision developed for its use was effective. Density requirements were achieved, and the as-placed mat had excellent (very low) permeability characteristics. Laboratory performance testing showed the SM 12.5 (GTR) mixture to be more crack resistant than conventionally modified polymer (SM 12.5E) mixtures. Conventionally modified SM E mixtures had slightly better rutting performance. However, this conclusion was based on performance testing and thresholds that were developed for non-modified asphalt mixtures. Additional laboratory and field performance comparison is needed to develop mixture acceptance criteria for GTR mixtures. Further, THMACO mixtures had excellent laboratory reflective cracking resistance properties. They performed particularly well in the Texas overlay test. Grading of extracted (from the asphalt mixture) binder may not provide an accurate representation of the binder performance for the dry process GTR modified asphalt. Continued monitoring of performance will be needed to quantify any benefit of SM 12.5 (GFR) mixtures in comparison with regular SM E mixtures. The study recommends additional field trials with SM 12.5 (GTR) mixtures for performance evaluation. Further, the study recommends continued use of a THMACO as an interlayer to mitigate reflective cracking for composite pavements.

Book Significant Findings from Full scale Accelerated Pavement Testing

Download or read book Significant Findings from Full scale Accelerated Pavement Testing written by Wynand JvdM. Steyn and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2012 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 433: Significant Findings from Full-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing documents and summarizes significant findings from the various experimental activities associated with full-scale accelerated pavement testing (f-sAPT) programs that have taken place between 2000 and 2011. The report also identifies gaps in knowledge related to f-sAPT and where future research may be needed. NCHRP Synthesis 433 is designed to expand the f-sAPT base of knowledge documented in NCHRP Syntheses 325 and 235, both with the same title of Significant Findings from Full-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing. f-sAPT is the controlled application of a wheel loading, at or above the appropriate legal load limit, to a pavement system to determine pavement response in a compressed time period. The acceleration of damage is achieved by one or more of the following factors: increased repetitions, modified loading conditions, imposed climatic conditions, and thinner pavements with a decreased structural capacity which have shorter design lives"--

Book Uses of Recycled Rubber Tires in Highways

Download or read book Uses of Recycled Rubber Tires in Highways written by Jon A. Epps and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1994 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis on the use of recycled rubber tires in highways will be of interest to administrators and policy-makers; pavement, materials, geotechnical, environmental, and traffic operations engineers; and research engineers involved with highway design and construction issues. Information is provided on the uses of rubber tires in asphalt paving materials as well as other uses, such as on fills and embankments, for erosion control and on railroad grade crossings. Specifically, information is included which identifies the agencies using or implementing applications for recycled rubber tires and defines the design parameters, technical and construction limitations, performance, costs, benefits, environmental limitations, specifications, and availability. This synthesis of information defines the use of recycled rubber tires in highways and is based on a review of nearly 500 references and on information recorded from state highway agency responses to a 1991 survey of practice. Updates are included for as much of the state practice information possible through 1993. The use of scrap tires for highway applications is dynamic with regard to policy and technical issues. Therefore, the reader should keep in mind that the information presented reflects the best available data at a particular time. The synthesis also identifies current research in the topic area, critical research needs, and legislative issues that affect application and use of recycled rubber tires.

Book Using Ground Tire Rubber in Hot Mix Asphalt Pavements

Download or read book Using Ground Tire Rubber in Hot Mix Asphalt Pavements written by Donna S. Harmelink and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Documents the construction and performance of the research study which was initiated to address section 1038(d) of the 1991 Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA). The project selected to demonstrate the crumb rubber process was located on Platt Canyon (SH 75) from Bowles to C470 in the Denver metropolitan area. The project was a low volume roadway and quantities of crumb rubber introduced into the mix were minimal. This was to reduce risk in terms of premature failure and Colorado's limited experience with crumb rubber. Because of this limited experience, the "dry" process was selected. The project contained four different mix designs. A mix containing 1% [20 lb/ton (10 kg/Mg)] crumb rubber, a mix containing 1 lb/ton (0.5 kg/Mg), a mix containing 3 lb/ton (1.5 kg/Mg) and a mix which contained no rubber were placed on the project.
