Book Measuring Up

  • Author : Daniel Koretz
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2009-09-15
  • ISBN : 0674254988
  • Pages : 255 pages

Download or read book Measuring Up written by Daniel Koretz and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-09-15 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you judge the quality of a school, a district, a teacher, a student? By the test scores, of course. Yet for all the talk, what educational tests can and can’t tell you, and how scores can be misunderstood and misused, remains a mystery to most. The complexities of testing are routinely ignored, either because they are unrecognized, or because they may be—well, complicated. Inspired by a popular Harvard course for students without an extensive mathematics background, Measuring Up demystifies educational testing—from MCAS to SAT to WAIS, with all the alphabet soup in between. Bringing statistical terms down to earth, Daniel Koretz takes readers through the most fundamental issues that arise in educational testing and shows how they apply to some of the most controversial issues in education today, from high-stakes testing to special education. He walks readers through everyday examples to show what tests do well, what their limits are, how easily tests and scores can be oversold or misunderstood, and how they can be used sensibly to help discover how much kids have learned.

Book Effective Prayers for Various Situations

Download or read book Effective Prayers for Various Situations written by Mary J. Ogenaarekhua and published by To His Glory Publishing Company Incorporated. This book was released on 2006-06-15 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lord instructed us through Luke that we ought to pray always and not to faint. I believe that prayer changes things. We release the hand of God to move on our behalf when we pray. It is my sincere belief that a non-praying Christian is an ineffective Christian because it is when we pray that God gives us what we petition Him for. We therefore ought to pray in order to change the situations and circumstances that the devil sent against us. No believer should allow unclean spirits to run around in his/her life without effectively rooting them out. Unclean spirits defile people and seek to hinder our Christian walk. They promote a life style of promiscuity, fornication, profanity, perversion and other ungodly behaviors. The prayers in this book will help you to drive them out. Know that your Christian walk must be in right standing before you can effectively go against evil spirits to destroy their activities. You cannot walk in rebellion and expect to be able to destroy rebellious spirits also because they have roots in you. The Lord taught me that rebellion cannot put down rebellion. It takes someone who is walking in righteousness to be able to pull down rebellious spirits. Also, the Word of God says that "there is no peace to the wicked." Therefore, do not expect to see peace in your life if you are walking in wickedness. You must first choose righteousness before the prayers in this book can be effective in your life. Jesus said, "Let him that have hears hear what the Spirit says."

Book excerpt: Over the past few years, international literature has highlighted the limitations of arthroscopic treatment for antero-inferior instability of the shoulder. Therefore, the question arises as to which technique – open surgery or arthroscopy – may represent the best alternative to the classical arthroscopic capsuloplasty. The volume is organized into five chapters and presents five different techniques. Each chapter describes the non-surgical and surgical algorithms for the treatment of unidirectional and multidirectional antero-inferior instabilities, with and without shoulder laxity. The chapters offer a detailed description of each technique, enhanced by 10–15 high-definition photographs, tips and tricks, and pitfalls, as well as surgical steps. The book is aimed at medical students, fellows, specialists , orthopedic surgeons, physiotherapists, and rehabilitation and generalist physicians.

Book Withdrawing Under Fire

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joshua L. Gleis
  • Publisher : Potomac Books, Inc.
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 1597977403
  • Pages : 313 pages

Download or read book Withdrawing Under Fire written by Joshua L. Gleis and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The post-9/11 world has witnessed a rebirth of irregular and asymmetrical warfare, which, in turn, has led to an increase in conflicts between conventional armies and non-state armed groups. In their haste to respond to the threat from insurgencies, nations often fail to plan effectively not only for combat operations but also for withdrawal, which is inevitable, win or lose. In order to answer the question of how to withdraw from engagement with an insurgency, Gleis examines how insurgencies are conducted and what, if anything, is unique about an Islamist insurgency. He then proposes ways to combat these groups successfully and to disentangle one’s military forces from the war once strategic objectives have been met--or once it is clear that they cannot be. Because this type of warfare is dynamic and ever-changing, this book is not meant to suggest a set of cookie-cutter solutions for how to withdraw from insurgencies. Rather, the author analyzes six counterinsurgency operations that have taken place in the past, with the intention of gleaning from them as many lessons as possible to better prepare for future withdrawals. The literature on how wars end has failed to explore irregular warfare. This much needed reexamination serves as an indispensable starting point.
